Chinese are the exact same racial stock as the Japanese are, so if Japan could be a competent military power, then there is absolutely no reason China couldn't also do it. Besides that, China has 10x the population of Japan and Taiwan really isn't that big or powerful. The only basis you have to entertain the notion that Taiwan could hold out hinges entirely on both America's willingness AND ability to save them. Neither of which are certain, especially with China's massive naval expansion and them actually poised to surpass our navy in size in the near future. Even having modern aircraft carriers that would rival our own. It hasn't been since WW2 when we fought Japan that we faced a naval power that could be considered a peer to ours, but we do now.
