Your "experience" doesn't reflect the general culture of martial sports. The "filtering" that happens in martial arts is exactly the opposite of what you just described: kind hearted and gentle people are driven away while the most toxic macho types thrive in these sports. Back when I tried to fight, it was a recurrent joke that half the fighters had restraining orders against them. The atmosphere was the opposite of kind, humble or "respectful". It was highschool on steroids. The most respect they'd show was shaking hands before a fight.

Back in the day when I tried jujitsu, and later judo, all the other guys ostracized me and refused to fight with me. there was never a flat out refusal to train with someone, and moreover the practice was to adjust how much power you used with different people both in sparring and on pads to a level that's not problematic. if someone was paired with another person they knew they'd have a clear advantage on, they would be encouraged to focus on their technique and defenses instead of being a bully; it's practice after all. i definitely saw people get frustrated with their own performance or execution but after every class when everyone's sweaty and packing up it was nothing but respect and positivity. the group chat thing leads me to believe that gym was probably already cliqued up when you walked in there.
i'm willing to go back and see if my experience changes at all now that i'm out unapologetically, but it's just so damn expensive.

well, growing up i definitely had my fair share of social failures. still have some, but not nearly as bad. how i did in sports or gym class never really seemed to factor in, either being overshadowed by another student or one of my older brother's accomplishments. as long as i tried i could hang with the athletic students, but never stood out.. the brother i'm closest to in age is currently the one who's the strongman who competed in nat. worlds recently and used to compete in state for other sports. meanwhile in school i never bothered with taking up after-school sports because that would've taken away from the time i had to game. also any homophobic rhetoric at the time wouldn't have really made the same impact as i wasn't even out to myself yet and i would start addressing that after graduating hs. i would by no means consider myself perfect or anything like that, but i would like to think i have improved as a person through my 20s and especially since school. besides, i don't really like to dwell on those days, as i don't think it's healthy and the past can't be changed anyway.
