I would say it's less of a virus than Windows is, especially in Windows' current state. Your router is probably using it. Your ISP's routers are probably using it. If your phone isn't apple, your phone is using it. Most servers you connect to, are probably using it.
Just don't run random commands that begin with "sudo" (without understanding what they do) and you'll be fine. If you don't know what you're doing, setting a strong root password is probably also important.

Also install the uBlock Origin extension in your browser to get rid of evil trackers such as spur.us that 4chan tried to push a few days ago.
