>spend time learning how to study
of course not
but that's not what people are usually doing when they read self-help slop
you should NATURALLY learn how to study by DOING it, for the most part

life ain't a videogame and it often doesn't work that way
but if you can make it work that way & get results, go ahead

We are talking about reading some pretty short books and some results on cognitive studies. Not exactly a special commitment one needs to carefully consider.
On the other hand a lot of people use verifiably inefficient methods of learning. Whether they succeed without correcting or improving those is kind of irrelevant. You seem to project a lot of your insecurities onto the question. It's not that deep.
Snakeoil, self help and self improvement traps are basically another topic that happens to be adjacent. Jumping to that is like associating universities and studies with diploma mills. Or dieting with anorexia. A normal person isn't going to join a cult after trying out the pomodoro method or writing some notes by hand.
