Can psychedelic drugs actually result in lasting scientific contributions when used in the correct settings, or are they just reserved for spacey druggies who want to sit and muse about infinitely recursive thought spirals about nothing?

You think Feynman wasnt spacing when he was thinking about path integrals? But when asked where he's most productive he says "at home with my family". He meant in his study/garage smoking his pipe but had the decency not to say it. I think people who use drugs for innovation tend to also realize that it's not something to be promoted for the average person, or associated with science in general which is otherwise admirable. I have used them for general creative purposes, but also have been broken by them in ways that I embrace but also would not wish on anyone. So it remains an unspeakable truth, which in some sense is like a demon which isolates a person from the natural social order.

For me they have. They have helped me gain an understanding of material that seemed beyond my understanding. They have also given me insights about material I already had an understanding of, I would describe it as being able to more explicitly describe intuitive understanding, as well as more intuitively visualizing discrete information.
I wouldn't be able to do my job without those insights.

you arent asking the right questions, you need to ask yourself what creates bespoke thought
look at the Szilard letter, Einstein didnt even think of atomic bombs when inventing the physics behind it.
sometimes its necessity, sometimes its random, sometimes its a game of 4d chess where the established physics need to be destroyed to be iterated upon.
does your brain always work perfectly? are you that stupid? it doesnt even matter the question is already answered
unless OP is elon or bezos or cook, even if drugs could help you, you already dont know how to properly function. you are merely an orifice to your employer and they pay you to shit out something moderately productive.
Diogenes would tell you to listen to your own self, stop seeking validation

>Simply to make the world a better place.
How can you make the world a better place by indulging in and furthering the interests of a system of values that makes the world a worse place? Or maybe you mean I should use the knowledge I gain to destroy the technological system and anyone who seeks such "progress"? :^)

I was pretty sheltered but also a lifelong reader of erowid from my teens through my 20s. Weed, salvia, shrooms were the psychs I've consumed (plenty of experimentation with other drugs too). I thought I'd end up doing Terrence McKenna heroic doses once I became more independent; even had some DMT sitting there for years but never tried it.
Turns out, a few mildly intense mushroom trips (2g penis envy shrooms, but while on SSRIs which dulls the effects) were enough for me to "get the message" I was looking for and tune out. I'm a cognitive scientist turned computer scientist, I contribute by talking to people
