Hellebuyck's problem has always been getting overplayed. His best playoff year was 2021 when he only had to deal with a 56 game schedule. Having a tournament in the middle of the season is the best possible thing for him

We needed a hero, not a miracle

was it gamechanging in that it greatly affected the match results? yes
but like bro was just flailing? I've seen the clip and feel like anyone would've done the same thing and it being blocked was just how the dice turned out

iunno I was never a hockey goalie, but players should generally keep their eye on the ball (puck)
if it was intentional then yeah that's sick, but the puck literally glances off below the stick so it going so far laterally seems more likely to be luck (imo it being intentional at that speed and distance would be like intentionally bunting a 100mph fastball to a called location on the infield; inhuman precision, but more likely a fluke)

He is trained to put down the stick to try and deflect. Whether he blocked by luck or by skill isn't worth discussion, because he instinctively knew to put the stick down and it worked.
And hockey players do know pucks get deflected in such ways for the record. You will often see opposing players sitting in front of the enemies net with their stick down, they create a ramp with with hockey stick for the puck to launch over.
With all that being said, FRICK hallybeyruek, he met the orange man, he can't be a hero with no morals

yeah that much better expresses my feeling, the puck being blocked seemed lucky but checking Toews stick that was positioned being the intent
I probably kneejerked from all the "godlike career-defining save that will be his only legacy" sentiment out there when he was just trying his best at what he was drilled to do and it worked out

you could say this for literally any historic sports moment. Idk why you’re so intent on diminishing the significance of it. It was an amazing save in probably the biggest game of his life. Why is that hard to comprehend lol?

nah, not diminishing the significance of the event, but determining whether to attribute said significance to the player or circumstance, which >>153678323
helped clarify
"why?"
well perhaps if it was truly totally intentional I might follow his career with great interest. If not, then "yay we won", next match. This is a sport forum, no?

hello internet newfriends, hopefully typing in URLs wasn't too challenging to learn how to do

ah, I see what's going on. This entire discussion when I refer to the act being "intentional", I mean the RESULT of the block being intentional
he put his stick behind him to ATTEMPT a block via stick contact, hence "him doing his best" (and it worked out)
it's the difference in perception of a guy calling a homerun then walking up to plate and actually doing it, yet internet sentiment is making it seem as if that was what he did
>>
>>153683435
If you “intend” to do something and then it happens what would you call that? Did he just put the stick there for fun? He’s a fucking goalie ofc he was “intending” to block the shot. This is some high level autism I’m dealing with even for this site.

say in a scuffle on a sidewalk someone kicks the other's leg as to have him lose balance. He falls to the ground, and his phone is loosed from his backpocket and is crushed in the road by a passing car. Did party one intend to have the phone destroyed?
he intended to check the stick, but was the puck not scoring an event totally under his control as implied in posts like >>153678141? This is the crux of my question.
the distinction seems like autism to you (it is), but the answer makes a difference.
my point is, then from now on, I can expect him to make more similarly impressive saves? Because the internet is saying so
