the cosmos were a genuinely big deal, probably comparable to "messimania" in miami though obviously the era was different and there wouldn't have been a lot of serious soccer fans. My dad sold cars in jersey and he got to be sort of a hanger-on with one of the argentinian or italian players, I want to say Chinaglia but I honestly don't know, and he probably embellished the story and just did drugs with the guy a couple times.
But because so much of the growth was concentrated in the one club and there was no salary cap or soccer infrastructure, the other owners and teams lost their asses trying to keep up. You don't have to love MLS, I don't, but it's obviously good at avoiding this kind of scenario

Because the NASL was unapologetically American and tried to grow the game in the US by appealing to American sports fans. The cringiest thing about MLS is how much they clearly want to copy Europe without understanding why things are different here. "Real Salt Lake" "Inter Miami" fucking really? Come on. I'll take American corniness over Euro "prestige" anyday

I would totally be a huge Cosmos fan if they were still around today. Such aura

This. MLS almost feels like a very superficial outsider's interpretation of the US of A, identity-wise. It should be more unapologetically American

And the thing is, it used to be. There was clearly a top-down decision in the 2010s to "Europeanize" MLS clubs so now every team is just "FC", "SC", "City", "United", etc. So boring
