Or you never break through and it's just the ceiling. Ask Toronto fans about that. Minnesota too, most of their existence has been 1st-2nd round fodder for the actual contenders. Calgary has been stuck in that cannon fodder cuck zone too every time they made the playoff over the last 20 years. It's because Minnesota and Calgary never bottom out badly enough to acquire the kind of superstar talent at the top of the draft that Cup winners have.

It also depends on your core's age/experience level. For Anaheim or Ottawa or Montreal, winning a round or two then losing is a great outcome to this season. That gives their young core important playoff experience and something to build on next year. For Dallas or Edmonton or Carolina it's devastating. They're closer to the end of their window than the beginning and if they don't win it all that's one step closer to the next rebuild with nothing to show for it. For Colorado and Tampa Bay it would be disappointing to fall short but their cores already have their Cup so it's not going to haunt them.
