speaking of ai card art i'm always surprised when i see WIP/process images for hearthstone cards. They're so fucking horrible (and have been for years) that they should just cut out the middleman and go full AI. Literally would be an improvement.
pic not related ofc, i always actually thought mtg art was good, some of the lands are legitimately beautiful

Feels like they have completely shit the bed with MTG, theyve made so many goofy sets in rapid succession that it makes me wonder if theyre trying to tank the IP and do a runner when they say "were not making any more" which would automatically make every card more valuable. >>97617974
If you keep it in the hand, it's effectively 4 damage per turn. That's the same as a shiv, so it's like playing Infinite Blades. Though keeping it in hand isn't a totally neutral proposition since Watcher tends to have hand clog issues.
After 4 turns in hand (an eternity for Watcher), it's now equal to Sands of Time but costs 2 instead of 0.
>>
>>
>>97617988
I havent played in like 10 years, it use to be fine. It seems like theyre a rapid firing new sets out and they look like jokes, and then you see that they are actually considered compatible and part of everyones decks.
MTG use to be a setting, now its the equivelent of Fortnite in card game form.

I'm not a magic player, but is untapping a creature during combat possible in a way which allows that creature to attack again? If not then this is just a +2/+2 which lets you waste mana on healing yourself if you ever need it. It doesn't sound good to me.

>>
>>97618012
there is no second attack phase so no you can't attack again unless you have some combo running. but untapping allow you to reuse a tap skill so there is definitely some potential there. I assume the +2/+2 can help by survivin the damages you took .
>>
>>97618012
You can only attack once regardless of whether a creature is tapped or untapped. But when your opponent attacks you can untap AND pump one of your creatures to kill theirs with by blocking it. And that's before getting into questions like "why the fuck does it have flash?", or its interactions with tap abilities, or the fact that artifacts interact positively with fucking everything these days. AND it can be sacrificed to gain life on the same turn it enters, and JUST to top it off it can target your opponent's creatures too to enable even more interactions.
The fact that this card is a common makes me want to fucking vomit. One big reason I stopped playing Magic was that cards were just too fucking tiresome to play with. Too many words, too many abilities, too many things to learn and remember.
>>
>>
>>97618011
I guess I play it differently then. for me the watcher is a class where I constantly shit out my hand and cycle through my deck due to the absurd mana gain and draw power it has. and in the ideal case scenario I just go infinite.
retaining a 2-cost damage card in my hand never feels good because I constantly draw into my hand limit. a 2-mana deal 11-23 damage is simply worse than drawing better cards during the course of 2-4 turns.

I know people have been claiming that anything they don't like is "the cancer killing magic" ever since like, the fucking stack in 6th edition, but I really feel like the 1-2 punch of universes beyond and FIRE design dealt a blow that the game simply can never recover from

>>
>>97618015
>>97618016
Fair, I guess I didn't value untapping as much and I have no context of the cards centering around artifacts. But assuming it didn't untap, a 1 mana +2/+2 "instant" that costs 2 mana to heal later on doesn't seem that good. It just seems like "a fine value card, but not really something an average green deck would play". I guess the untapping would help improve certain combos and from what I've heard green has an insane amount of ramp nowadays.
(Again, speaking as someone who doesn't play magic and just randomly stumbles upon posts or videos related to it)
>>97618026
MTG had crossovers for a long time. I first learned about this when someone randomly posted My Little Pony cards and I accused the person of being autistic for creating OC MLP cards in a different game and writing "this card gives you mana based on the colors of the toy you place next to it". Turned out those were real.

It was Avengers that mindbroke WotC. Somewhere between seeing the success of the movies in the run up to Endgame and all of WotC's employees being millennial manchildren who liked Avengers themselves, they spent a few years in the run up to Endgame trying to set up their own really shitty Endgame within the Magic universe with a set called War of the Spark. Don't believe me?
>Avengers: Endgame release date
April 26, 2019
>War of the Spark release date
May 3, 2019
The literal fucking weekend after. And the worst part? War of the Spark was a runaway success financially. It completely destroyed the last shred of fun the game had left (see: Modern) with broken unfun cards, and showed WotC that they may as well just ape pop culture because millennial losers care more about that than they do the Magic universe.

As an artifact that would still be extremely good in drafts provided there were cards that interacted well with artifacts in the set. You underestimate the strength of having an extra thing lying around on the battlefield.

Its funny how you can go on mtga, play constructed with a mid deck, or a meta deck thats just missing a few key cards, do meh, that go to draft and whoop some ass, game after game.
Draft is were the skilled players go to just whoop some ass.
Not saying you can't get screwed over by lack of bombs, removal or whatever but the skill ceiling is a billion times higher.

>>
>>97618048
Keyforge was the funniest shit. They were prebuilt randomised unique decks with unique card backs and names so you couldn't change cards without your opponent knowing. All the Magic players who are used to winning because they bought the best cards refused to play the game how it was meant to be played because it meant they couldn't win via money. You were meant to play a Bo3, first with your own deck, then with your opponent's deck, then your bid for the better deck via handicap levels. Whoever was better at evaluating decks would have the better chance of winning. But Magic players refused to do it and just wanted regular Bo3s with their deck, at which point they started buying shit tons of decks to try and find a good one.
Constructed players truly are an abomination.
>>
>>97618034
Amazing lmao. But I assume that has a lot to do with the early overpowered cards which got banned at some point.
>>97618037
>You underestimate the strength of having an extra thing lying around on the battlefield.
I guess so. I've played a ton of card games in past and stat bonuses were often a mid or bad effect even if they're cheap and instant. My biggest time sink was YGO where a card could literally double your stats and it wouldn't be good even 10-20 years ago before the game became infinite combo slop and was closer in tempo to current MTG and HearthStone. Simply because of how accessible and cheap removal is in YGO. For example, there I'd rather play a "guaranteed kill" battle-trick like Sakuretsu Armor or Dimensional Prison instead of a "Your monster gains +1000 ATK and potentially counter-kills the attacker and turns into a beatstick on the board".
I was thinking it would be the same in MTG. I just assumed you'd rather play a 1-cost instant that says "Kill the attacking creature" or "Put a 0/-3 onto a creature", and if everyone is playing removal then the stats don't matter as much when blocking so a self-buff wouldn't be as good. That was my thought process.

>>97618052
Don't get me wrong the pizza card isn't "good", it's just ridiculous for a common. One mana removal exists, the problem being that it never should've existed because it made creatures unplayable. WotC responded to this by printing more and more value and abilities on creatures which led us in part to the word soup you see on new cards.
This card is possibly the most broken thing WotC ever printed because its influence on future card design has been catastrophic. How can you play a creature like Knight of the Reliquary when it can be removed for a single mana having achieved absolutely nothing?
>>
>>97617992
I mean final fantasy is fairly close in aesthetic to the actual setting, more so than some recent in universe sets which I fear may have given wizards a false idea of how much people would support the wackier crossovers being in standard (if I remember right there was one other crossover in standard i'm forgetting? but as the first one the impact probably wouldn't show so much)
>>
>>97618054
It is quite funny how the best received UB sets so far have been the ones that fit quite nicely in MTG's aesthetic. Final Fantasy, Avatar and LOTR could very well be planes within MTG, whereas Spiderman and TMNT...well.

I remember that event haha. The problem is a lot worse than prize competitors, because atleast they're playing for money, not for fun, my issue is when 95% of the mtg community partakes in constructed game modes were they just want to Google top meta decks and win.
I've played nearly 400 games of commander on xmage and everyone just wants to stomp and bring edh decks far beyond the agreed upon power levels.
I exclusively play draft now.

It reliant on the online game engine to know the rules instead of you, that's why it's bloated and obsessed with ref and collabs that artificially creates a speculation market for the otherwise unplayable paper cards
>>
>>97618031
Worth noting the MLP crossover was years before any other crossover, just a fun little set of half a dozen cards you could buy you weren't supposed to actually use anywhere from another franchise within the same company, then they started on other little mini products like that but with licenses from outside hasbro, then it was prebuilt commander decks, then it was straight up full crossover sets in standard
Turns out the slippery slope is very real.

The thing with MTG is that it's one of the worst IPs to force crossover slop on because it's already set up so you can do whatever you want in-setting and it would make sense. FFS, we have a Japanese mythology set, you can make a wild west set work if you wanted to.
>>
>>
>>97617967
That sucks.
Is Wizard blacklisting the artists that are found to be using AIslop art? I know this isn't the first time this happened.
One of the few good things about modern MTG is that it's still a good place to find interesting fantasy artists that are working hard and grinding it out. If they lose that to the AIslop menace, that's another thing this game loses.
>>
>>97618135
I'd argue its perfect for crossovers because its just a big disjointed multiverse with no real coherent aesthetic. I could totally believe that the world of Avatar or Forgotten Realms exists amongst its planes, not to mention that making cards of existing characters from other IPs has been a widespread passtime for decades
>>
>>97618055
>whereas Spiderman and TMNT...well.
Devil's advocate (and I really don't want to be), but those are two sets that were almost certainly licensing requirements to get crossover properties they really wanted. Fortnite went through the same failed TMNT push to get Avatar shit, and Star Trek coming later this year is almost certainly in the same 'Paramount desperation' boat now.

There's still plenty of good art, albeit, from old and new names alike. Especially since in the past half decade or so there's been less of a directive from above to try to make every art look "consistent" (Read: Boring)
But we are slowly losing ground to both crossover slop and AIslop. Not good.

I agree but I don't find it offensive that an artist got paid for that work. Artists are mercenaries, they work for pay. The offensive thing is the fact an art director wanted it and someone above the art director wanted it. Leadership ultimately has the final say and TMNT is what they wanted. None of this awful shit would have happened if leadership had not decided to pay to license TMNT.

Britoid tranny wrote that on his cards and whatever tournament he was playing
at didn't allow it, big drama issued until wotc not only capitulated but doubled down on it
Their reasoning was that the cards weren't forbidden because of the slogans wiritten but because the author of said cards doesn't like trannies and has been blacklisted

Not for the first time, either.
Hasbro can make millions off of MtG, but paying an artist 200 bucks to make something real is a completely impossible financial burden.
This is what happens when you give in to total greed.
Only imbeciles and cucks still monetarily support this corporation.

This is something I can partially excuse, because in the original original Mirage comics she was lightskin mixed, presumably Black and Irish, based on Eastman's real life girlfriend even down to her name. So for once it's not a Jimmy Olsen/Mary Jane Watson/Wally West/Electro/Josie McCoy/Heimdall/etc situation, the pasty redhead *was* the Hollywood change, not the typical other way around, they were just reverting it. Probably happened because the writer Laird was the main one consulted for the show and he didn't know Easton's intent since it was drawn and published in BW. Hell, they even did it to Baxter Stockman, he just got reverted a lot sooner.
BUT they are also clearly going overboard the other direction for virtue signalling reasons. Especially because she's always been a bombshell (for her age in the aged down versions like 2012, something the 14 year old watching could still get a cartoon crush on).
2018 is tentatively acceptable but probably about 15%-20% too far. Hair still reddish at least, skin still slightly on the lighter side maybe she's just a little tanned, I think that series did mostly takes place in a single summer, still has some hips even when she's aged down more curves than 2012 even. Like yes, her voice actor looks closer to comics April than the character, but it's mostly the grandma chic hipster fashion sense that's doing her the disservice. Like, is that even a realistic way for a Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan highschool girl to be dressed? Just looks like some suburban white girl's Tumblr OC. Probably is.
And 2023 is just completely unrecognizable. That's just a second Mindy Kaling Velma.

I remember when the pizza land cards got revealed and everyone went
>That's AI art.
And for weeks the guy who supposedly painted them, in a completely different style than all his other cards, didn't show a single fucking thing. And then he finally comes out and goes
>so sorry it took me so long to find the files and sketches I did to prove I didn't use AI. It's so hard to find the files for my professional artwork that I am paid to make for this commercial product
And every sketch was blatantly just a rough scribble that he did over the AI gen with no variation, as if he just immediately landed on the exact format and layout of each card in one go. Including one photo of him badly trying to replicate holding an object like a pizza slice in the extremely unnatural and confusing way the AI art did, as if he used that for reference... but only for that one card. Didn't need to photograph his hands for reference on any of the other incoherent slop pizza cards, or ever before on anything else he's ever drawn.

Who the fuck cares? Fuck "artists" wanting free money for a shit hobby. AI does better than any human so why not pai AI instead of the human? Integrate AI into your workflow if you want to ge paid but otherwise just do it as a hobby like every other normal being and get real job
>>
>>
>>97617970
I'm not going to try to convince you about the merits of art as a human creation, that's way too subjective and contentious to make much headway on, but it should at least be clear why people aren't thrilled about these kinds cost-cutting measures being implemented in a product that is then being sold for the same price as always.
>>
>>
>>97620927
Why you are not selling your product then if you have such great ideas? Whoever has ideas now can make product with democratized technology. If you have no idea, no support, you are no one, can't distribute, can't market, who are you? Why you deserve product?

>>97618027
Look, I haven't played MtG since 2014. But I just want to let you know, this crossover garbage is the true death knell as far as I'm concerned.
There is nothing redeeming about this hobby anymore. It's gone from being a legitimate game to just being some bizarre vehicle for dogshit corporate crossovers.
I'm not fucking around when I say this shit disgusts me. The LotR shit disgusts me. The Spiderman shit disgusts me.
It's all just blatant cash-grab nonsense. This product has decayed. The only other franchise I find comparable to this shit is Fortnite. It's a travesty, and supporting it with your money is ludicrous.
I've said it before in other threads; we should make our own set. Why not? If it's free, who cares? We can make our own goddamn cards, I think an insular community effort is the only way to reclaim any semblance of self-respect here. I'll come back to the hobby just for that reason, if only we can get enough people interested.
We can get the will to actually make something like in the old days and disengage ourselves from all of this decay and decline, bring back a little creativity. How many cards do we need for a set? 200? Even if no artists bother to aid in the project, we could soullessly use AI to generate some card art we can make 200 cards. And, damn, not like we could be blamed for using AI art when even the REAL cards use that SHIT anyway.
Just saying.
Think about it.

I am not a big card game player , but I never got why they didn't try to balance around this , by just adding anti removal cards. or just making protection style effects more comon , just add some kind of restriction so that normal and fair removal effects still work.
this seems to be a problem , all card games seem to follow for some reason.

Gee I wonder why the format that was famous for being able to buy a 40 dollar prepackaged product, and the cards never rotated, and you could just go and fucking play with the other largely casual player ase succeeded.
But no, please, keep blaming fucking Commander because WotC, but more specifically Hasbro, are milking a dead cow because theyre a failing toy company trying to keep their heads above water.
The anti-commander crowd has grown just as loathesome as EDHonlys.

In an ideal world, every format would be healthy and players could just live among each other regardless of what format they played. I'm not disagreeing with what you're saying - the fault lies on Wizards for not doing anything to ensure formats are healthy.
>The anti-commander crowd has grown just as loathesome as EDHonlys
I think the truth of the world is that a huge number of people are tribal-minded. It's team vs team. And the teams are fighting over a limited pool of cards, limited because Wizards limits it. Because there's no stakes on this website it feels entirely futile trying to convince someone from their tribal thinking - you do it for years and see no change and you just stop engaging. In real life there's less antagonism but the same amount of unwillingless to experiment outside the tribe. Me personally it's been impossible to get people playing any other format except EDH, which is the only format that is growing. On one level I don't need to care because I already made my friends when Magic was healthy but nobody is joining my friends to play non-EDH Magic.
I am at a total loss at how to unfuck this situation because as you said it is entirely on Wizards. I don't want less EDH being played in order to bolster the other formats because this shouldn't be a net-zero thing. The whole community should grow with people playing a diversity of formats but that's not happening because the most natural way to join Magic is EDH. It's the same way with golf how it has priced out the entire population and the most golf that gets played among the youth is mini-golf.
I don't know about you but at this point I'm settled into watching all the formats other than EDH die because there's simply no way to stop this from happening. And all the bitching in the world won't change anything when it is real-life self-interest economic factors deciding that EDH is going to be the way Magic is played from here on out.

>Here's my totally real sketch of the card I didn't generate with AI!
>You can tlel it's not AI because I provided multiple near-identical images with no meaningful changes
>I even took a picture of myself pretending to hold a pizza slice in the same way even though it makes zero sense for someone to grip a slice of pizza with the bottom of their finger and first knuckles (plz don't bully me about the way the final piece isn't using the same post as my photo ref and how the AI hand is somehow more relaxed and less awkward than my attempt to replicate the pose)
>Look! There's brush strokes! AI totally can't do that! No one has ever hastily painted details onto an AI gen in an attempt to hide their crimes!
>>
>>
>>97618049
the thumb isn't even touching the pizza slice, its being held up between the ball of the hand and the fingers despite the fingers not curling around to actually put pressure on the ball of the hand
also the island is a slice of pizza floating over an endless sea of cheese despite the other 4 lands having definite backgrounds like tables or walls

Actually, Red, Green, and Blue are all floating in cloudy or goopy voids. Interestingly, only the white pizza land is holding the slice correctly. Even that one has some bizzare shit going on with the cheese and toopings exploding and oozing all across the table, though.
All the rest have the slice pointing towards the holder in a very awkward way. Crust out, tip towards the viewer, with the hand coming from the bottom or side of the frame. Makes very little sense for pizza, a circular food with the crust facing outward on all edges so people will have something to grab onto when reaching towards the center of the table, right?
The black pizza land is also weird because the slice is being held (very awkwardly) from the back, but the slice itself is on the edge of a massive wooden (?) platter where the crust should be facing the viewer, or there should be other slices with the crust facing out. And again with the topping and oozey cheese just splattered all across the surface.
There's not a lot of understandable artistic decisions being made here. Makes me think that a bad imagen AI was used, maybe one with a model or lora trained on the guy's other art, in hopes of skirting any potential drama if he got caught. The orientation of every slice in these cards is maybe the most damning piece of evidence though. Look at the results when you google "pizza slice" and you'll see that almost all of them are usually crust at the top, point down, overly glossy from studio lighting for stock photos, and the cartoon illustrations tend to over-emphasize the drippy/stretchy cheese.
I'd wager AI gen + paint-over to get the land symbols in there.

MTG Used to have the best art of all TCG's, and it's also incredibly good taste of you anons to reference alara, it was one of the best modern sets for mtg. if you look back at the premodern era of magic art, almost all of it is spectacular.

You sort of have to compare it to powers, it's roughly a 4 damage per turn power, doubled with Wrath. This makes it a relatively poor card, as Combustion from Ironclad does very similar things for 1 less energy and is an AOE.
That said, I've picked it in a handful of A20 runs and it played a vital role in winning. At certain point you sort of have to look at your deck and realize "I have everything but damage" then Windmill strike will make perfect sense when it randomly appear mid act 3. It plays well against Time Eater and the Heart. since it has decent per-cast value, which could be built up by any Vault you have.
It is also one of the cards that get a lot of bad rap because it is weak act 1 and feels bad to have when you are overpowered, but by right in most decks it is pretty decent because the floor of a random card that doesn't redraw itself (Retain) is quite high, compared to several bad Watcher powers that will constantly shuffle themselves back into your hand until you spend energy to get rid of it. It's an okay card to get off of random transforms for example.
