They WERE flat out better in 95% of cases because they were the setting stand-in for nobility, and because in the setting they had their own flaws, failings and slow doom.


In modern ttrpg's, you do not have a good reason to be able to play a Tolkein elf. It's not balanced or fair.

You need an elf almost like Torquemada (iir the name correctly), minus its autistic elf hate, to make a good playable race.
Clearly elves, but they have clear weaknesses and frailties where they fall behind next to other races. Who themselves, are lacking in certain areas elves excel at.

Humans are the TRVE master race in My setting. Elven kingdoms see halfbreeds as an abomination that they either get aborted or execute on sight, while humans see them as a favour to strengthen an elf's bloodline.

As a Tolkienfag, I'd rather the DnD Elves be some other kind of fae and I abhor nipelves.
I have this vague idea for a way to make Tolkien style elves be playable without being utterly OP:
- Same statline than a human PC
- A pool of metacurrency they can spend at will to improve rolls. It can be use to save against death for themselves and allies for instance.
- The pool never completely refills (if at all).
- When the pool reaches 0, the character retires.
- As they rely on their superior innate abilities, they level up slowly, if at all.
- They should be direly weak to some types of obstacles, present enough so it is relevant but not too much as it becomes obnoxious. Things related to despair or such.
But just theory craft on the top of my head, I'm too busy working on other projects to work on my fantasy heartbreaker.
