Random question, if you were meeting someone new and introducing yourself, would you describe yourself as a Magic the Gathering playing? Or even as an ex-Magic player?
I am trying to move on from being an 'ex Magic player' to just being a player of a different game, but it's hard.

It's not even worth going to return to old stories or iconic planes at this point, at best we get hat sets that reference old cards or happen to take place on a plane
Even in those scenarios, the raw number of sets in universe means that it'll be years before you get followup to anything you cared about.

I haven't yet bought any UB product, but if one comes out with a commander precon that
>is an IP i really like
>looks like a fun archetype
>features a character or group i liked from that IP
I'd probably buy it, just because I've never played commander and thus dont have the staples anyway.
The David Tennant Dr Who deck was the closest I've come, but the deck description didnt speak to me, and it sold out everywhere so was only available above msrp.
Correction, I also own most of the godzilla cards, including the lands, and have it framed on my wall next to my curio of Godzilla merch. Im missing the Hangarback Walker, we didnt realize it existed when we got the set framed. Original printing for Space Godzilla, didnt feel the need for both.

Also i think deadpool is the most interesting(mechanically) MTG card printed in last decade. So i will probably buy one.

a part of me is tempted to go back to making custom cards like I did in high school because sometimes I see the dumb characters I made cards of back then getting official ones now and think even my dogshit over/underpowered concepts were better than what they actually did. maybe it's just cause I was doing one-offs and wasn't concerned about whether it'd make for a cohesive EDH deck (I refuse to call it commander) or fit well into a design skeleton
>>
>>97644010
if it's to video game nerds I do, yeah. in the context of "yeah I don't really do esports anymore but I play this old card game competitively which is similar. I won $1000 in a tournament last year, it's a pretty legitimate scene."
normal people, I would try not to mention it.

does wotc even understand that they are killing standard?
with 3 sets (4 if you count core, which you shouldnt) people had AT LEAST 4 month milage of their standard deck being good.
Now 7 sets per year, 2 month (sometimes less) time difference between sets, you can expect only those 2 month milage of your current standard deck, because fire card design will straight up make your shit obsolete.

>there is legit not a single person under 60 that legit cares for star trek
Then why are there 3 different people in this thread shilling Trek?
TNG was an iconic tv show that many millenials learned to love even if it wasnt "our generation". Trek had dynamic characters, attractive characters, good plot, and relatively few filler episodes. Also non-trekkies wont get this, but Trek is very much a good ip for UB because it is inherently a fantasy show. The only real problen is it will probably have a ton of legendaries but if they design it well, it wouldnt be as egregious as turtles or spiderman in that regard.

Final Fantasy was sold out at legitimately 90%+ of magic stores. I don’t remember Lord of the Rings being sold out, but it had a 2 million dollar chase card to lure the whales, scalpers and gamblers to buy as much as possible. Final Fantasy also had 77 50,000 chase cards. Couple all that with an increase in pricing for UB sets to offset any costs that relate to using the IPs and you get, easily, the two highest selling sets of all time.
In regards to Avatar, I’m not sure how it’s the 3rd highest selling sets. It isn’t as big as FF or Lotr and didn’t have any gigantic chase cards.

I'd really like to make a 60 card deck to play in some stuff with locals. I've heard standard is very "just try to ram your strategy down someone else's throat" right now, so I want to take the opportunity to make a deck for my girl Terra. I love the art and character but I don't want to have some WUBRG slop Tom Bombadil commander deck.
Admittedly I'm kind of out of my element with this format. I'm in gruul, maybe naya if I try to include GW Yuna, should that deck base start with 4 badgermole cub and formidable speakers? Seems like the first few turns are just going to aggressively ramp into flipping Terra and either impending/copying the Overlord or pitching/rezzing bahamut to copy him. Anybody fucked around with her builds?
>>
>>
>>
>>97646597
So what does current standard look like, deck or turn wise, in regards to some sort of gruul strategy requiring a tap ability? Turns 1 and 2 llanowar/badgermole ramping bullshit, 3 to bolster and maybe tutor the last piece, then blow shit up turn 4?
>>
>>
>>97646742
gruul isn't really a deck right now. the only deck that plays those colors is basically mono green instant kill deck that plays mightform harmonizer, icetill explorere and red pump spells that give trample
>>
>>97646742
Standard meta looks kinda like this:
>izzet casts 5 spells in responce to your first land drop
>drops monument turn 2
>kills you
>mono green ramps into Thousand/Thousand creatures turn 3 because you dared to not have removal for badger mole turn 2

Wasn't one specific thing. A combination of pack prices doubling, a new set releasing every two months of less, designing sets with commander in mind more so than 60 card or limited, phasing your own world out in favor of other properties i don't care about, insane power creep. Plus many more dumb decisions. I could handle two or three of these, but they seem to be doing everything possible to drive out the people that were actually playing the game in favor of people that just want to collect stuff that makes them feel nostalgia for their childhood, or for people who ONLY play commander.

I work in a big toy store that sells its Pokemon card stock out immediately. We have MtG cards but no one buys them. If WotC were making any real money we'd have their shit and it'd be flying out, but that's not happening. Why?
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>97647175
Nobody comes into our store asking about MtG. Why would we bother when we can spend that time and effort getting hold of Pokemon? Last time we got a big Pokemon drop we had people queuing from 1:45am. By the time the store opened the queue was long enough to deplete our entire Pokemon card inventory.
Most people don't even know MtG exists.
>>
>>97647190
If you work in a toy store, you probably have a bunch of children coming in with their parents. Pokemon is bought up by either children, scalpers or people that are trying to get off on nostalgia. Magic is bought up by 20-40 year olds.

This is how several companies die. Once they start thinking about ways to sell to their distributors rather than to the customers it’s over. MtG is strong enough to keep going for years but they desperately need a course correction. They need to choose their UB products much better. Some people will like garbage like marvel and tmnt but others will be completely turned off. Look at Planar Standard. They’re essentially splitting standard. MtG is headed for a huge crash unless rubbish like Marvel and Star Trek does well. Here are just a few issues TMNT has had
>All the same color dice sent to stores
>Promos already curled
>Packs with no rares
>Textured and damaged cards out of the pack
>Poor attendance from a burnt out audience
>A small set made even smaller by characters repeating. I literally saw someone’s board had 5 leonardos including buddy cards. It’s fucking retarded.
I’m sure there are many more issues. It’s a better limited environment than Spiderman, which is almost a compliment.
>>
>>
>>97647553
>Some people will like garbage like marvel and tmnt but others will be completely turned off.
It's honestly crazy how they shouted for years that sets can't have horror themes or skeletons or realistic spiders because they might turn some players away and "MAGIC IS FOR EVERYONE!!!!!" (tm) but when it comes to UB they have ZERO concern for its divisiveness. They don't even mention it.
Players who don't want UB in the game? SCREW 'EM. But whiny babies who don't like spiders? Yeah, we'll completely and totally pander to those idiots.

We’re all equal, but some are more equal than others.
Wotc just apply DEI crap in whatever way benefits them the most. Just like all corporations do. The only thing they actually give a shit about is money. But unlike in other industries their enshitification of mtg is not without competitors. Many new tcgs are popping up courting the mtg audience and taking large swathes of market share. For example One Piece, Yugioh, Sorcery, Flesh and Blood etc. If they refuse to cater to some of the fanbase they will make their own formats (premodern, planar standard, block constructed and etc), cubes, or go to a new card game entirely.

If Nosewater didn't want culture war, he wouldn't have made all humans some variation of negroid in the newer sets. But now it's part of the game. The culture war was jammed into MTG by Nosewater.

>I don't see why putting black people into a setting is so bad
Anachronisms are a sign of bad design.
Intentionally introducing them is a signal of wilfully bad design.
It's one thing to suck at something. It's another thing entirely to do it intentionally.
> As long as they don't change the races of established characters what is the problem?
First, Kayla bin-Kroog. Problem established.
Second, the problem is one of aesthetic consistency. Zhalfir and Kamigawa do not display this kind of problem, but Kaldheim does.
The best way I could express the problem is, you want internal consistency within the setting. The forcing of ethnically diverse characters into the setting is a 4th-wall-breaking design concern. It is as if the universe is ruled by a deity who dictates such things, which creates dissonance within the setting.
Suspension of disbelief is vital to good storytelling. Deliberately introducing politics through the 4th wall ruins that.

This, blacks have a specific place as savage/unrefined cultures. Or if you're going to have some blacks make them their own culture at least. Not this fucking "everywhere is just like LA a melting pot" bullshit.

MTG is now a culture war game. D&D is now a culture war game. The grognards and OSR fans have been booted out for pro-zog and globohomo normalfags. It's all thanks to JotC prioritizing the positions and opinions of those who have the most economic power (the tranny position) while Nosewater makes up some nonsense about somehow being "opposing people in power" when he's just pushing the politics of those who have economic power.

>culture war grievances have been drilled into them
Opposing trannies, miscegenation, and internationalism is just the natural human default. Humans are default tribalistic and favor those who are like them more than others. Rather the opposite position, the pro-globohomo, anti-racist, etc. positions are the ones that have to be drilled into them by two or more decades of consistent propaganda from schooling, television, etc.
>a normal human
Normalfags are the worst kind of people. Universally poor taste. Extremely indoctrinated. And then they pretend that their unnatural and abnormal beliefs that came as a result of decades of indoctrination and propaganda are somehow the normal views. And then we have people such as yourself who don't understand this who then complain when someone actually has normal human beliefs and doesn't like the abnormality they're referred with double speech. The natural position is something "drilled into them" while the unnatural position and artificial position from decades of indoctrination is said to be that of """"normal""" humans."

I understand they didnt get the rights to the movie likeness; sure whatever. I really wouldn't care if only one of his cards is raceswapped; tossing a bone for the language to gnaw on is whatever.
But literally every single fucking card of Aragorn, an explicitly white character as written by our lord and savior Tolkien, probably the most lusted over character in the entire fandom largely because he was portrayed by peak Viggo Mortensen, is just made in to a generic middle aged black guy. Why? Why pay MILLIONS for the rights to a fucking property just to butcher one of its most recognizable pieces? It's like paying to make Harry Potter merch and making Ron a Chinese guy.

It depends on the context. Among 'respectable' normie company I generally say my hobbies are books and movies. I'll include video games if it's not in a professional context and if I'm in a nerdy sphere I'd be more specific and also include MtG and board games.

I like TMNT. It just doesn't fit into MTG like the rest of UB doesn't.
At least Final Fantasy had a comparable fantasy/scifi hybrid element to what was in MTG prior to the UB nonsense to the point where it was more along the lines of the artstyle and some of the aesthetic choices that didn't fit. Avatar also at least has some fantasy elements, just more along the lines of eastern fantasy which is present in some MTG sets. The problem with FF and Avatar is just them being jammed into the game at the cost of its artistic character to attempt to appeal to people who would have never considered MTG in the first place.
In the case of Spiderman, Spongebob, Sonic, etc. they don't fit MTG in any way whatsoever.

Notice how the Redditor went for the "April was originally black" narrative when turtles are allowed to have different depictions. Because that's how Redditors operate, truths only exist to benefit blacks.
If you have a white character in the source material and there's a single sentence mentioning that he was "tanned" from going to the beach, then canonically he must be depicted as an African.

She was based on a woman who was a mulatto so was less black than other characters. But still half black. They made her go full African in the tcg for some reason (gee I sure wonder why???). Most people think of the cartoon though where she was clearly white and I genuinely believe her cards would be worth more if they had used the cartoon’s character design.

From looking over major sellers, every single one that hosts public stats tells an identical story:

I just kinda don't want to play the game anymore at this point.
Even trying to play EDH, the format WotC is allegedly hard pandering to, feels like a slog because it's a neverending stream of must-answer 4-drops sometimes supported by 1/2-drops that should have been banned all the way back in 2011 when the format was made official. Never mind the fucking elephant in the room that is Rhystic Study which may as well be Divining Top on steroids in terms of how much time it wastes while going in every deck because it's a super consistent way to win games.
Now I just hear that what is very arguably one of the bottom 10 sets of all-time was a top 10 bestseller that Mark thinks should be emulated tells me there's no chance of it getting better.

It's to distributors and they over-bought based on the hype around Final Fantasy. That's the only metric WotC have or care about. They under-printed EoE and Spiderman UB has a license tax added to it so one box of that is already more than one box of any non-licensed set.

I liked the 1987 cartoons but for some reason my deeply mentally ill mother hated it. I have no particular love for the series now. I watched the awful films with my brother and even as a young un thought they were shit.
Something about the mtg version just feels so commercialised. So paint by the numbers. Like with the pizza, it feels like an ad for dominos. Or how Spiderman and TMNT both have pigeons who make food. It wouldn’t surprise me if the TMNT set was just one dude assigned to design the whole thing and he spent the majority of his time playing against bots instead of real people.

>you said it wasn't wotc's decision so it had to be imposed by the tolkien state right?
Had to be? No. You've failed basic logic.
It wasn't WotC's decision. LotR owns the property. WotC can't change something about their characters all willy-nilly without LotR's approval, even if it's for a WotC product. LotR is responsible for the final decision.
Let's use... the IDW Transformers comics as an example. IDW, at one point, had the license from Hasbro to make Transformers comics. Hasbro has to sign off on everything. This resulted in various idea and decision scenarios:
- The comics wanted Optimus Prime be the leader guy that turns into a red and blue truck, as usual. Hasbro signs off on it.
- The comics wanted to kill off Bumblebee. Hasbro says NO, we don't want you to do that. We won't sign off on that, but you can kill someone else off. Ironhide dies instead.
- The comics want to change up some stuff, like have Chromedome and Rewind be gay robo married. That's different from their usual characterizations in multiple ways! Hasbro says sure, we'll sign off on that.
- Hasbro's making a bunch of toys that combine into one big robot. Hasbro tells the comic people "incorporate combiners into the stories more", or they won't sign off on the comics.
