Anyone got any better than this D&D now vs then comparison pics, especially for art style?
Seeing the new MTG set look so incredibly gay and full of mediocre modern digital fantasy art is quite sad.

Pic on the right is a trap. Sure, it looks like Fulsom Street in San Francisco with less leathermen. But it's also exactly the kind of thing a beholder would do and the reason is to attract other beholders to the degenerate spectacle so the gayholder can slay them.
Beholders hate most life forms but hate other beholders most, because they aren't perfect like that beholder.
I'm surprised that mirrors aren't more effective on them. Here, just stare at yourself while we get the flaming oil ready.
>>
>>97832558
Not all beholders hate everything other than themselves. Some can get along with others like that one leading a thieves guild. Spectator Beholders like that one you meet in BG2 is pretty friendly and will talk to people.

This is stupid.
Both of these images are false.
The image on the right is not new-D&D, it’s what pearl clutchers and grognards think new D&D is like.
And I’ve read the old stories of pre-millennium adventures. Those were just as prone to colossal shit-shows as today.
Nothing’s changed, except which rules are getting argued over.

Aside from the "herp derp we must be diverse as possible" bs, what may I ask is wrong with the bottom image? The cookies? What, dwarves aren't allowed to like cookies now? That seems a bit silly to me, honestly.
>>
>>
>>97833119
>Aside from the shit, what's wrong with your salad?
Serious answer: It's soulless. Nothing about the image inspires creativity or imagination. It's like they asked ChatGPT to generate an image. I can look at this image for twenty minutes, memorizing every little detail, and the moment I look away it'll disappear like dust. Even a passing thought gives me more interest in what Dwarves could be than that image.
And you know what? I get why they had to do that, because DnD is so utterly divorced from any sort of cultural context that every race has to be boiled down to an Ur-Example of what they are. The Elves in the PHB are shown sitting around drinking wine and casting spells. That's all they could realistically show them doing. I guess that's the horror of the bottom picture and why it turns people off, because it lacks any humanity to it.

The problem is the forced message of reversed gender roles. They're trying way too hard to push the point of "seeeee??? the man should be in the kitchen bringing cookies to the two strong women who are doing the real work and the gay man who is helping them."
I don't want to play dnd thinking about someone's modern political issues that they are writing about on twitter. I want to look at in-game artwork and be immersed.
>>
>>97833168
Fair enough, but I will say that there are enough male cooks/chefs around that being a cook/chef isn't really a feminine profession exactly, and yes I know that female cooks and chefs also exist which means it's not an inherently masculine profession either.
I don't understand why you think the male dwarf at the forge is gay though, honestly.
>>
>>97833182
The first impression I get from the image is not that the dwarf bringing the cookies is some kind of professional chef. The first thing I get is "wife bringing cookies to the hardworking men but gender swapped".
Obviously, there is nothing inherently wrong with such a scenario. It's the way it's shoved into my face at a place I don't want it to be at that bothers me.
>I don't understand why you think the male dwarf at the forge is gay
I was being half serious but he does kind of give me that vibe. I don't know what it is. His hairstyle? His tan? His choice of cosmetic accessories? His body language?
If I had to bet I'd say he's at least open to experimentation

Fair enough, to be honest with you I don't like most modern DnD art either. I just can't entirely put my finger on why the way you and a lot of other people can. It just rubs me the wrong way, it feels like it's lacking a proper sense of adventure.
>>
>>97833206
>I was being half serious but he does kind of give me that vibe. I don't know what it is. His hairstyle? His tan? His choice of cosmetic accessories? His body language?
Dwarves inherently lean gay in depiction, as does almost anything "overtly masculine", hence so much of gay porn being obsessed with muscular men and fatsos.
>>
>>
>>
>>97833231
>it's lacking a proper sense of adventure
It's because the focus of the artists is something else. What I think is happening is, the artwork is made to depict certain imagery and elicit feelings that a specific audience will approve rather than invoking a sense of wonder and adventure. Namely, "inclusiveness", "a safe space" and "acceptance". Soft, muted lighting, neutral colors and non-threatening figures.
As opposed to older images which feature extreme contrast, sharp edges, "dangerous colors" (such as blood red or blinding yellow) and generally shocking imagery.

For the umpteenth time, the right image is a Pride special artwork made by Ultra-Pro. It's not WotC artwork. It was probably approved by WotC, but it's not in any offical D&D product.
As for the left image from the Days of Yore, you have two white dudes screaming in terror, a Girl Boss who is the only that is actually doing anything, and a pretty boy with an ear-ring & curls string a pose.
If you put half as much effort into your campaigns as you do being offended by nothing, you'd be having a good time instead of being the miserable pricks you are.

Dwarven cookies seem like they'd be a good snack for laborers. They'd be made more calorie dense, sweet and salty, and be easy to eat for quick energy.

I feel like you and I are complete polar opposites.
I'm not bothered by the diversity but the ugly gay fucking manbun, big goofy smiles, and "quirky wholesomeness I GOT COOKIES!" shit annoys me. Like that Legends and Lattes book, I can't imagine having a fantasy world and deciding to focus on putting a Starbucks in it. It just feels so fucking gay and allergic to adventure and perils

Just remember, you fucking faggots were warned about all of this. As soon as 5e back in 2014 put a whole paragraph of SJW bullshit into their Gender section in the PHB, the beginning of the infection was clearly present. You are the idiot who had a tick bite on his ass with a red ring around it and ignored it thinking it would just go away. You are the idiot who thought that it didn't matter because you could just bury your head deeper in the same and it would all go away. It didn't go away, did it? You knew it would take effort to fight back, so you convinced yourself that it was pointless. So you let these faggots take over the hobby, let SJW bullshit like Session Zero and X Cards get inserted into the game, let the reddit chinstroker blogger faggots astroturf it into standard practice, and you didn't do anything to stop it. You could have called it out as the disingenuous bullshit it was. You could have targeted normalfags getting into D&D and tried to keep them out. But I bet you didn't. You went right along with it. As soon as some 5/10 bitch with tattoos wanted to learn how to play the game from Stranger Things (which she watched while Chad was rawfucking her) you folded like a good little simp and taught her how to play, then she went home and got rawdogged by Chad again. Fucking imbecile. Then you let trannies in, because uhhh they're so heckin cool and quirky and draw le cool art for our game. Nice job idiot because now you have an endless supply of drawings of your warrior hero in bisexual lighting and all it cost you was the entirety of your hobbys culture and creative identity. Fantastic trade! You are like a boomer, a short-sighted hedonistic retard who let D&D culture turn into complete slop because you wanted to get your dick wet. And the saddest part is, you probably didn't. Go fuck yourself. You knew all of this was coming. You were warned. And you did nothing. In fact you actively spit on the people warning you. You deserve all of this.

As you said the forced diversity (demihumans having the same mandatory racial phenotypes as humans) and the focus on SoL (plus queerness and lighthearted tones expressed through saturation/lighting other than composition), which the game itself doesn't actually reinforce in any dimension (hence a tonal whiplash).
>>
>>
>>97833119
>Aside from this
>they aren't allowed that?
Assuming you're in good faith, I'll put it this way. Yes, the forced diversity by itself is already bad and corporate, and no, the cookies by themselves don't make this reproachable, but there is a collection of little things in the image that, separate, are harmless, and together are fake and gay.
It's the forced diversity + the cookies + the performative male feminist haircuts + the basedcuck facial expressions + the cat + the guy on the left being such a faggot he'd wear sandals to a forge + him being the whitest male in there and taking the cookies to the brave women and racial minorities in a subliminarly subservient position + the excessive gay bear porn muscle glimmer + the hammers looking like MCU mjolnir + the art just looking bad.
None of those things, in a vacuum, would completely ruin an image, just like having either AIDS or the flu won't kill you.
The top pic is just male power fantasy, a guy taunting whoever's facing him, 2 weapons in hand for double ass kicking. It fits better a game that dedicates so many pages to combat.

There is nothing more savage, cruel, and monstrous than a sexually desirable woman who knows it and uses it to get what she wants from men. The goblin on the left will have the decency to kill you brutally, the goblin on the right will destroy your life, your finances, your sense of worth and self, then bounce to do it to some other poor sod. And the moment, the actual moment she finds out you've started picking yourself back up, she'll make a beeline to you so she can do it all over again.

/tg/ has this uncanny electricity in the air, I just know if I post a picture of a piece of actual shit and say "This shit smells bad actually" someone will reply "Um, like what's the problem? It's just shit? You've never eaten shit before? Everyone always ate and smelled shit all the time, that shit isn't even representative of shit" etc.
I've never seen a bigger gathering of contrarian defenders of the status quo. Is it because they have some deep Freudian instinct of "oh no I don't want to be one of those incel guys who complain about things being bad, I should attack all complainers I find, then everyone will know I'm not an incel"
What if the shit actually smells bad though? What if the art really is gay?

There has been a fair amount of evidence that various corporations have hired PR firms to monitor various 4chan boards and attempt to control the apparent reception of their IPs on those boards. I would not be surprised if Hasbro hired a firm to watch /tg/, focusing on 5e D&D and MTG. Since you asked about distinguishing Mexican from other North American aesthetics.
>Is falconry a Mexican thing?
Don't be stupid. You don't have a good argument so you're just trying to throw shade.
Ambiguous
Boots are higher than vaquero boots with a deeper scallop but they are more decorated like vaquero boots.
Rider in background has common hat with curled brim.
Horses.
>Everything else I see is Cowboy coded
Totally. Triangular axes are cowboy, not at all stupid fantasy shape.
Vaquero/charro/Mexican
Prickly pear is native to some of USA but is mostly strongly associated with Mexico and the parts of the USA that were once Mexico.
Axe figure has a large knife/short sword sheath that is the right shape for a machete. Machetes are standard Mexican tools, not generic cowboy.
Strongly vaquero/charro/Mexican
>The big hats?
Yes, the big hats.
>They're in the desert.
Many Earth cultures are desert based and developed suitable headwear. Not many of them came up with the sombrero de ala ancha. The squatting figure at the lower right is especially obvious. The two on the horse are wearing the same style of sombrero. Broad flat circular brim, circular, flat topped crown. In fact, it looks like he's wearing the sombrero de charro.
Only one culture came up with the sombrero de ala ancha/charro: Mexican.
The squatting figure also has a type of moustache commonly worn in portrayals of Mexican charros/vaqueros and not just "cowboys in general".
The child at lower centre is wearing a small serape or poncho or rebozo with a decorative trim that is not general cowboy but reminiscent of traditional Mexican.
The saguaro is found only in Arizona, which used to be Mexico until 1848 and Sonora (with a handful in California). No columnar cacti appears further north than the saguaro.
Multiple items of Mexican-inspired clothing and appearance in a Mexican-inspired environment. If you can't see Mexican there you're literally or figuratively blind to the obvious.

>How is that fat orc going to migrate across the rocky desert?
Camels have huge fat supplies, up to 12% of their total body mass is their fat hump with another 3% elsewhere, total 15% and they do pretty well.
For comparison, albatrosses add about 15% to 40% body mass of which 75 to 90% is fat.
Emperor penguins add 10 to 40% body mass before breeding, mostly as fat, and then migrate inland to the nesting colony. Penguins, far less suited to walking than humanoids, manage the extra weight for long distances.
While afaict the heavy set orc is there for reasons of "diversity" and "representation" we don't have any data on this fantasy race, its biomechanics, cardiovascular capacity and any increase in muscle mass along with what does look like extra fat content. Fat could be a survival advantage on a migration.
You need to watch more David Attenborough shows and learn a bit biology and apply some critical thinking skills more before putting your ignorance on display.

It's a vacuous image.
Every image in a fantasy setting should either make us think about the setting, inspire you to be enthusiastic about it or give us some information.
Basically it should have one of the following 3 I's in it: interest, intensity or information.
Preferably two, optimally all 3.
Let's take pic related. It's an action scene, look at the pose of the warrior on the left, so there's intensity in there, which is always the easiest one to get mind you.
Information? Well we can see a big city in the background, we know this world has 2 moons, that it's a savage, barbaric desert setting and that things look fairly brutal.
Interest? Hardest to do, but look at how alien the image is compared to most settings you'd see at the time, no knights, nothing european-ish, who are these people, what is their world like, if you saw this back in the day you'd at least want to hear the elevator pitch for Darksun and that's interest.
What does Dwarves & Diversity tell us? What does it have to inspire? What in that image would make you interested enough to go 'Alright, tell me more about this setting?'
In order: Nothing, nothing, nothing.
D&D is and has been coasting on its image of 'being D&D' for a while, it rolls on up to the red carpet and goes 'You know who I am, now let me in'
Which works for a time, but if you don't put anything new or interesting out you can't claim to be an A-lister forever, people lose interest.
One day, maybe not today or tomorrow but one day, the WotC are going to pull the usual 'Don't you know who I am?' card out and the answer is going to be 'No, who the fuck are you?' and what are they going to have to fall back on at that point?
Not 'Well I created this interesting setting' or 'The mechanics in this game of mine redefined fantasy roleplaying for a generation'.
They're going to pull out their portfolio of works and it's going to be nothing but gay dwarves and orc baristas.

>Can't address the argument, therefore attacks the person
>On an anonymous board of all places
You would say that given you're paid by WotC to be here. And I have as much proof of that claim as you have that I've got ulterior motives. So cope about it louder.

How much of this is due to Critical Role?
And speaking of which, some of them look really ghoulish nowadays. I checked out a stream like a week ago or so for 2 or so minutes and took a screencap.

I love how the picture on the right is showing that the Gayholder is using magic, while looking at the epicenter of the village's lived queer experience, which implies he is the one making everyone in the village gay for his sadistic amusement.
>>
>>
>>
>>97840463
It's almost all due to Critical Role. I stumbled upon a video, where they played D&D with a live audience and THEY FILLED AN ENTIRE STADIUM full of nerdy, somewhat queer or leftist looking Millennials.
>>97840484
You aren't thinking gay enough, anon. The Gayholder has knowledge of advanced gayness. Modern queers don't cheat on their wife with gay men. Nower days the boomer man uses his vast wealth to transform himself into a bimbo plastic hon, who is adopting precarious LGBT youth from the street and gives them free drugs and housing, while socially pressuring them to join mandatory "cuddle" sessions. The young trans enbie "girl" is then forced to "eat the boypussy" of the giga-hon and can only hope that chugging an entire bar of Xanax will get the taste of unwashed ass out of their mouth.
>>97840485
Nothing of this is new btw. Even the Roman dealt with the cult of cybele, which pressured young men into castrating themselves to become "female".

Ah yes another culture warrior complaining that people notice and hate his bullshit which adds nothing to the setting and makes no fucking sense when examined to any real degree. And what is the latest cope? It’s saying how no one cares. I mean I guess that would be true if this shit didn’t exist since adding it in the first place is caring. But I guess it only counts if it’s bringing it up in a negative connotation.

It does look so corny. Like early 10's Tumblr art and not something you'd see from an actual game company.
I guess if I were in charge of DnD I'd try to split the brand. One line that's traditional dungeon-crawling and the like. And the other one more aimed at people who play on Discord and want a cozy fantasy about being quirky tieflings running their own tavern or whatever.

Look at all the layoffs happening right now. The average age of a new hire is 42. Even if you're a doctor or plumber who will be fine, think of all your friends and family who are suffering because of layoffs, AI, rising gas prices, etc.

How to spot pilpul:
Thread topic
>Why did they make D&D suck with all this gay shit
Pilpul ITT:
>It isn't happening
>You always talk about this happening you are boring stop talking about it
>It didn't matter that it's happening it is only a little bit
>It's everywhere now but that's a good thing
>Actually it's always been like this
>You've been complaining about it being like this since the day D&D was invented
>You're just pretending that it hasn't always been like this
Just remember what every philosopher in history has said, never engage with pilpul. The purpose of pilpul is not to convince anyone or defend a point, it is to exhaust good people so bad things can continue to happen. Just continue to tell the truth and point out pilpul when they try it without ever engaging it.

it's awfully mundane, for lack of a better word
I understand that it can be important to depict regular people doing regular things, going about their daily lives... but the way WotC has been having their artists do that is just kinda lame. It's not cool, is what I'm trying to say. A humanoid dragon dude just walking to the market to buy an apple is... it's fucking gay, man! A guy with angel wings delivering the mail is kinda neat conceptually, but they always depict that in such a boring way. He's not soaring through the skies, swooping down and having fun with it, he's just working. That's lame! That's not why people come together to play funny fantasy dice games! Make it cool!

The problem is that I'm not opposed to the idea of dwarves baking cookies by default. That said, and as I've said before, that particular piece of art seems to lack any sense of adventure, danger or risk. I.E the sort of stuff people play games like DnD for, typically.

What you provided is a picture of ten men and a couple of dogs taken, based on their carbines, some time from 1873 to the early 20th century. Eight of the men are certainly not wearing a flat-topped, low crowned, box crowned, straight brimmed sombrero de charro, the remaining two of whom the picture is inconclusive about but I think the one at left is unlikely.
That one of ten Texans from a photo from the late 19th or early 20th century, is possibly wearing, though possibly not wearing, a hat adopted from nearby Mexicans is not the great argument against that orc picture being inspired by Mexicans that you think it is. It especially doesn't change the fact that even if some Texans wore a sombrero de charro, the sombrero de charro is most strongly associated with Mexican's and people descended from Mexicans, not Texans descended from altogether paler, more Northern European looking people.
At least you used bowler not derby.
But it's weird that you brought up bowler at all. Are you trying to flex on the historicity of sombreros and other such broad brimmed hats vs that of bowlers? Not only do a lot of us know that already so it's not much of a flex at all in that regard but we're talking about stereotypes here. Hats like Stetsons, including the ten gallon hat, wide brims, usually long central creases, some degree of roll to the brim are the stereotypical cowboy hat. Visual media whether pulp fiction covers or Western films or cigarette ads have been (or were, the Marlboro Man was retired more than 20 years ago) using those for decades. Historically accurate costumes for Westerns are relatively uncommon before recent years and not at all what most people would use when they want a visual shorthand for cowboy. Bringing up bowlers in a discussion about cowboy stereotypes, except if you'd said you thought that the stereotype didn't reflect historical fact which you didn't, rather than about English banker stereotypes was a weird flex.

Camouflage. It's huge and savage-looking, but it blends into the background so well that, until you look closely, you can't see the giant murder lizard right in front of the small troop of would-be adventurers, who are obviously completely unaware of the danger in their immediate vicinity.

Modern DnD reflects how bad life has gotten. It's leans towards escapism and it's all about bright colors. Most games are either fun comedy fantasy hijinks or Marvel power fantasies where you rest after each battle to make sure you're at 100% strength. No one wants to build themselves up from nothing or manage their resources to slog through a dungeon.
I think this is also why WoD fell from grace as the default non-DnD game. If you're doing DoorDash for a living and haven't fucked since college, the appeal of being a vampire in a slightly worse version of the real world just doesn't appeal to you anymore.

That's one of the most interesting things about this discussion. AI will tell the truth unless it is lobotomized to lie, like when Google's Gemini image generator was released and every prompt for any person such as "An American President" or "An Astronaut" always showed a things like a black guy dressed as George Washington or in an Apollo suit.
On the other hand, propaganda is always a lie to some degree. Things like taking D&D and making it into a homosexual village-wide date night or latinx refugee orcs instead of The Temple of Elemental Evil or The Tomb of Horrors.
In this instance, barring AI being instructed to deliberately provide the lie, any random AI model will be more truthful about the subject than anyone in this thread supporting the left-leaning politicization of the game by denying what the purpose of the aforementioned propaganda is.
The "evil robot" is in this case at worst a reflection of the truth and likely the good guy in comparison.
Kinda funny.

Not how it works. It's just glorified autocomplete. What it spits out is consensus from what it has been selectively fed, and even that will fuck up from hallucinations and other factors.
>>
>>97849655
You are incorrect about how LLMs work and articles like you posted are ludicrous yellow journalism. However, if you do believe that AI fed the truth will autocomplete the truth and AI fed lies will autocomplete lies, my point stands. The "evil robot" autocompleting the truth is a far better thing than a bad actor trying to manipulate people to believe a lie.

There has never been and never will be an AI model fed with the truth. And even if it was, it would interpolate random bits of truth in something with corresponding grammatical structure that resembles the truth locally, within spans of some words, but loses coherency over long enough texts.
What AI is actually fed with is a random collection of shit any faggot can write over internet, and then some ratings from pajeets hired to "reinforce" it to stop saying nigger. The initial random collection happens to contain /pol/posting, and you happen to be the special kind of retard that labels anything that's highly locally similar to /pol/posting as THE TRUTH MEDIA HIDES FROM US!!!!! Except "nigger nigger nigger" usually comes from the same texts so training AI to stop saying nigger stops it from bringing your "truth" up. Ironically if had more people able to say argue for that "truth" without spouting nigger every other word the AI would be less inclined to unlearn it.
>>
>>
>>97849783
> However, if you do believe that AI fed the truth will autocomplete the truth and AI fed lies will autocomplete lies, my point stands.
You have literally no idea how the technology works. Even if it is fed with a massive amount of completely true content, it will necessarily hallucinate and autocomplete into lies because the algorithm has nothing to do with true or false. It's statistical next token prediction.

Why would people stop complaining about something unless the conditions that caused the complaints to be relevant and valid change? Capitulation due to apathy is if anything even more cucked and disgusting than capitulation due to fear or resignation - it's admitting that you know you should go on fighting, you could go on fighting, but you won't because you have the attention span of a toddler.
I say this with all sincerity and seriousness: consider whether if your life is so lax and purposeless whether it's even worth continuing. These days there are any number of painless ways you could stop being a worthless subhuman drag on those of us still committed to defending our hobby.
>>
>>97844645
The issue is they're not depicting regular fantasy people going about regular fantasy lives, they're depicting modern city-dwelling liberal centrists living their own lives with a fantasy aesthetic. A working forge is not a fucking office, people do not show up on the floor and start handing out cookies to dudes working molten metal. A typical street in a medieval-esque place would not resemble a fucking San Francisco pride parade unless it was an actual festival. An inn is not a fucking Starbucks(I've literally seen some absolute queer at a game table ask the barkeep at a countryside stagecoach inn for a mocktail menu...).
The reason all this art is so hateful and garbage isn't the blacks, the queers, the whamen etc, those are merely symptoms of the actual core problem: these are not games made by and for people who want to play a role in a fictional setting, they are made by and for Theatre Kids and people who were too repressed as children to be Theatre Kids to self-insert into a kind of multi-author live-action tumblr fanfic.

>The issue is they're not depicting regular fantasy people going about regular fantasy lives, they're depicting modern city-dwelling liberal centrists living their own lives with a fantasy aesthetic.
Yours is probably the best post on this subject I've seen.
To be clear, what I'm about to say isn't disagreeing but just going deeper.
Because I thought about it and it is actually a little worse. I was reminded of an anime I've seen that's literally "What if modern life only with fantasy trope aesthetic?"
The scenario is a would-be hero in training has to get a day job at a department store because the demon lord got slayed. There's magic powered appliances and Walmart competition and literally just modern life with a fantasy skin.
It isn't immersive because the world building is a joke. But anime bullshit aside, it didn't suck. Not compared to shit like that art.
It didn't suck because it had a message about what the characters were feeling within that silly world and how they lived.
They weren't gluing cogs on a hat and proudly patting themselves on the back for cleverly looking sharp while missing the point entirely.
I think it's the focus on just the aesthetic that's the issue. It screams "Look at us! We're *so* fantasy rn fr!" It wants to be seen and wants us to see the elements it wants seen.
Whereas badass art has people in a fantasy world doin' shit.

Looking at the more technical aspects beside the gay things. They are in a forge, ahy the fuck are the dwarves letting in a fucking cat in? Why is the homo dwarf wearing sandals while looking lame as gay? Why are people dinning right next to the forge and simple ignoring the hit and bangingand most likely bothering the guy selling things or working? Then why is people doing paper work in a noisy hot place? And WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT FUCKING PYGMY STANDING ON THE CHAIR?! EVEN STANDING IS STILL SHORTER THAN THE SITTING DWARF, IS THAT A HALFLING WITH DWARFIMS?!
Final nail in the coffin, is lame and gay, simple as that, nothing interesting or noteworthy. Is a good deviant art fanart, maybe.
