Is the theme for this wave just repackaging old sets? Doesn't help that I'm incredibly pessimistic about the new movie and won't be paying to see it out of principle. I'm tired of the Womandalorian and his easily marketable plush Glup Shitto. The only sets from the sub-line I'm excited about are the rumored X-Wing and the "Anzellan Starship" because at least that will be a new design.

I don't really have an issue with wanting a certain minifigure, but people buying $150 sets they otherwise don't want, need or intent o play with just so they get their figgy. It sets a precedent that no matter how bad a build is and how overpriced it is, as long as there's a minifig in it that people want it will be eaten right up without a second glance.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I think the new one mostly looks ok, some elements of it actually look better than the last playset version, but the ship looks way too squashed. Like its 4-6 studs too short. Probably doesn't help that they cut like 100 pieces out.

The Falcon and Cantina should have come with bricks instead of the Tie.

It was pointed out that just to have the interaction between Han and Greedo, you'd need to buy the $80 Cantina, the $100 Falcon, and since neither of those even have the smart brick, you'd also need to buy the (at least) the Tie at $70.

You'd have to spend $250 just to have Han and Greedo sit in the Cantina shooting scene.

As you said, before minifigs were just a means to an end - a way to play and engage with a set. A starfighter would have a pilot, a droid, a mechanic and maybe a bad guy to shoot at. All of those make sense for the narrative's you'd play out with a normal fighter. Then collectors started emerging more and more, a lot of the more interesting figures became highly expensive and sought after and only because of their perceived rarity. Cloud City Boba Fett isn't worth hundreds of dollars because he's the coolest fig in history but because "muh collector's market" says so.

And this in turn has affected the philosophy of modern Star Wars figs. People willing to buy a $1000 set just fir the single exclusive figure. Or others throwing a temper tantrum because Zonko Glorbo has a slightly miscoloured toe-print. I've seen less market speculation for crypto coins than LSW figs.
