“About Damn Time” Edition
What’s on the workbench, /toy/?
Sculpts, castings, 3D prints, dioramas, mods, kitbashes, and repaint are all welcome!
Post WIPs, finished projects, ideas, techniques, ask for advice, and most of all, have fun!
HELPFUL TIPS:
-Invest in a rotary tool such as a dremel for sanding/sculpting, especially a flexible extension tip.
-Pin vises for drilling holes can be found at hobby stores like Hobby Lobby and are great for making peg holes.
-For soft, flexible parts get Sugru silicone putty and Oyumaru
-Hardware epoxy putties such as Waterweld, KwikWood, and PlasticWeld are similar to milliput, greenstuff, and apoxie, can be cheaper some times, and can be found at local hardware stores such as Lowes, Ace, and Home Depot.
-Bootleg figures make great custom-fodder, especially if the legit figures are pricey.
-Body-chan/kun, Figma Archetype He/She, Romankey x Cowl, and Sozai-chan/kun are great base bodies for import-style human characters.

I did post this WIP in the Thread about Toys already. Made the barrel articulation, it locks in 3 positions. Haven't done much since then, instead of focusing on the turret, next week I'm gonna print few parts of the main hull. Want to finally see how big it really is in comparison to figs. Tank is in 1/12 scale.

I was curious how 3D sculpting works, tried it for the first time, and damn, I need to replace my tablet. Buttons on the pen are not working so I could not rotate the camera in a more convinient way. So the process was pretty clunky, but I'm happy with the result, it's doable. Far in the future, I want to do my own collection of 1/24 - 1/18 scale Metal Slug action figures. YoloPark is doing something close to what I want to do, but I'm not a big fan of their sculpts.

Planning on making a cheap SS BBM Wheeljack I have into Greenlight, did a quick 10 minute edit of one of Mavs' generic fembot heads into her noggin. Need to design some replacement wheels as one of them broke during the disassembly process too, whoops!

That looks so cool! Here's my attempt at something similar. I used the old Marvel legends and tried to put his parts onto a more buffer base body. Head is a 3d print. It's not as good as yours. Pretty much looks like a custom where yours looks like a genuine product and that's like the highest compliment one can have on a custom board. Do you mind telling us a bit more about it? What's the base body? How did you do those perfect looking badge and chain?

Still modeling the head, have to touch up the gold again and have to design decals for the designs on the jacket. Really like this shade of blue

Oh, okay. I thought that badge was molded on and not removable. I never handled that vintage Dredd figure, but it sure is a good source for parts! Also I didn't know this line from lanard but it's generally not a line I'm really familiar with. I thought it was one of those extreme era GI Joe's or maybe a Small Soldier figure.

Initially I was going to look for something else and do a cloth coat, but I thought it would look bad unless it were tight on the figure which I worried would limit articulation. I bought a 2nd Aoshi to do Dante but that's going to be a lot more work, I'm 3d printing custom forearms for rolled up sleeves, a harness with holsters for E&I, and some miscellaneous belts and buckles for his legs and chest

I have far too many projects as is but I'm starting another one. Retro-style RT "beaky" Space Marine, roughly to scale with 1/18 (emphasis mine "roughly" as the idea is very much "what if Hasbro or whoever made 40K action figures around the time of Rogue Trader, so proportions and such will be funky on purpose). Should have similar articulation to a classic Joe, so not ultra poseable but not 5POA either.

>make great custom-fodder
I have a bunch of cheap auction wins (I mean like $4 per body cheap) for complete bodies, but they all have the same hair. A toy reviewer does head swaps when he finishes up the review, and he did some where he had removed and replaced the hair. I have the same figure 4x in one lot and 1-2 of those heads are fine but I'd like to swap hair on the other two, and I do have other heads. I have some He-Man head fodder for example and would swap some dark hair for his blond on the two heads.
Anyone want to point me to a good text or video about this? I assume it involves dropping the head in hot water but I want to know things like how long, how carefully and what tools to pry off the hair from the 'skull' - what kind of prep you need to do to the skull before you try to replace the hair, etc. etc.
Thanks!

You tried letting it sit in some water you boiled, AFTER you let the water cool down enough but not enough that you couldn't feel heat coming off it if you held your hand above the container it was in? And you didn't do something stupid like stick in the actual pan you boiled the water in, BTW?
Try a blow dryer. Borrow one if you have to. They usually have them at thrift stores but make sure you plug it in first so you don't take home even a cheap broken piece of plastic.
>>11720422
Acetone won't probably work on super glue, women glue fake nails on and they don't use super glue, if acetone took off glue, when they go to repaint or fix the paint job, the acetone could also take their nails off and I'm pretty sure they pay a fucking lot to get those put on.
Anon would need to use something stronger and would probably damage the foot.
>>
>>11720428
Do you happen to have a hobby shop that specializes in r/c stuff? You may be able to get r/c fuel with nitromethane in it, which works on dissolving cyanoacrylate glue. Not sure if it'll be cheaper than replacing the foot, but it's an option.

>>11720692
find yourself a small mom and pop type hardware store in your town and go there and ask them on a slow afternoon - don't tell them it's a fucking toy, tell them you were trying to repair something, bring the tube of superglue.
They might not sell what you need to fix it but a good competent OLDER male employee will likely know what you can find to use. Tell them its something that has something value to your child or wife and you don't want to ruin the original for them.

What part is stuck, the toe joint or inside the ankle? The toe joint can be fixed using a mini flathead screwdriver (they sell sets at the dollar tree, eyeglass repair kits too) and a hairdryer, heating and prying inside the glued area like a tiny chisel.
>>11719910
This will sound like my first reply above but here too you can use a hairdryer set on high and a mint flathead screwdriver, or a wooden spudgle (like a cuticle pusher) to pry the glue loose. Most hair is held on using superglue and will crack off after wiggling and paying for a bit. Work from the back so you don't risk damaging the face.
Use a Dremel tool with an engraved bit (looked like a bladed round ball) to remove the positioning strips inside the new hairpiece and smooth the top of the head down as well.
>>11721158
That looks great!! Armpit wings are easy, head to hobby lobby, Michaels, or Jo-Anns Fabrics and check their fabric costume section. Every one of them has a see-through lace spiderweb print where you can cut the inner web sections out to fit. If you can't find that you can always order a pair of Halloween spiderweb leggings and cut them up. To attach the fabric use a needle and thread, tying it around the inner shoulder joint, inside the lat joint, and finally near the elbow somewhere. You may need to drill a small hole and punch the head of a tiny push-pin in as an anchor against the ribcage and tie the string to that, then hammer it down flat. Delicate work
>>
>>11720985
Nope. Mine are all the same material. I dabble in a few other materials like SLS TPE and TPU now and again for things that need to have different properties to them like flexibility. Typically I use a food-grade safe SLS nylon that is polished through a tumbler. The details it’s able to capture for 1/12 scale figures is pretty crisp, almost as good as some resins but with some give to it.

This is a commission, the client’s OC is just proportioned that way. Also of note is that the final form of the commission will NOT be nude, just scantily-clad in sculpted NON-CASTOFF armor and clothing. I have however been given permission by the client to use a blank-head version if the nude model to sell on Cults3D. I plan to put it up after test-printing it from Sculpteo in SLS, but it’s going to be a bit costly to do so, which is why I’m waiting for my finances to recover from some major non-toy expenditures recently.
>>
>>11721326
So you want permant hard wings, or something flexible? For hard wings go snag some clear UV resin and slightly wrinkle a plastic baggie. Using a thin nozzle 'draw' the wings on the baggie then cure it with an led nail lamp. Use a fine tip white or black paint pen and draw in the webbing. Or etch it using a Tamiya plastic scriber.
You can heat up clamshell packaging and draw the lines on it. Or you could just get some clear vinyl couch cover material so it's flexible. Garlic cloves come in white plastic netting if you wanna go that route.
>>11721331
Alright, the ball joint looks to be made of that polypropylene "unpaintable" plastic which resists super glue so there's still hope. Heat that sucker up with a hairdryer and start prying around the joints and working the plastic.if you absolutely can't fix it send it my way and I'll take a crack at it.

If it’s custom water slides you’re going for, you can buy online ‘blank’ water slide paper and print off your own home computer printer, then simply use a hobby knife to carefully cut out the decal to remove the excess white of the paper. If you get the transparent water slide paper instead you’ll need to make a painted-on splotch of white model paint for the sclera to be underneath the decal, since white-ink is not something regular ink printers do other than one singular model that is expensive as shit.

Anyone know of a 1/12 action figure that's skinny and white (like #FFFFFF white)? I was looking at the Biblical Adventures base body, but I saw reviews saying even these base bodies are covered in paint that peels easily.
>>
>>11723524
There are several. I bought a used West Coast Avenger Vision that I plan to take the head and bare feet off for a custom. He's not as white as you want and has, for example, what's probably supposed to be briefs or a trunk on, that looks more dirty white than the do gray but I was planning on making it all the same shade of white.
You could paint a GMAN or similar?
>>
>>
>>
>>11723745
There are also some Black Panther soldiers who are entirely white, and it's a nice bright white - but those are the same buck as the regular BP, and if you don't want muscular, that might not suit you.
You also need to swap out the feet and the head.
>>
>>11723474
>print off your own home computer printer
I have a black and white only laser printer from Brother because I was tired of getting scammed by the printer ink industry, it's so over bros
Also do printed eyes exist for the Romankey Cowl or Crazy toys blank bodies or do they only work for flat anime faces like the SHF blanks

I should've just dyed Vergil's coat, this red came out so nice so quickly and it spread into all the joints at the same pace
>>11724223
You're probably going to have to paint the eyes if the head you're using has eyes molded into the figure. If the head has smooth eyes like most anime figures and you don't have a color printer you can get generic eye decals off aliexpress, they're almost entirely in boring or cutesy anime styles though

Can you harvest heads easily from Bandai Banpresto figures like PICREL? I found a link in the archive to a YouTube video but the guy either deleted his account or the video was taken down.
Wanted to see how much production it involved and what would be best to use besides hacking at the necks and ruining perfectly good x-actor blades?
Figured a box cutter might work but would also ruin that blade?

Microwave a bowl of water until it's really hot, but not damaging to yourself, usually like 1 minute. Dip the figure you're going to cut into a few seconds.
Some are saying use dremel drills, but they're usually too thick, if you're just wanting a surgical separation of 2 halves... and if you do use a dremel, you also have to wear goggles. I've had ceramic cutting discs SHATTER, with the shards lodging into the wall in front of me, and thankfully not in the direction of my unprotected eye.
>>
>>11724665
Get a soldering knife. They’re like $20 at craft stores like Hobby Lobby and Michael’s. Should cut right through, but make sure to wear a mask and have good ventilation. The fumes when the blade melts the plastic aren’t anything you should be breathing.

Coincidentally, the loose figure I bought arrived. He's definitely got vein definition in his muscles and if you want smooth, he won't work. There's also a Black Widow body but people tend to charge a fucking fortune because of the heads and probably the boobs. But you might find someone selling it headless.
Vision came with his head, I just am using him with a different head for my custom. You can also ask at the Marvel General but I find them very useless with questions.

Heat the neck up with a hair dryer, use a #2 xacto knife to remove the head and trim the neck closer to the chin. Use a Dremel tool with a round bladed engraved bit to hollow out under the neck and crate the hole where wrhw ball joint (or revo peg end) goes into.

Rit DyeMore will dye all unpaintable hard plastic/polypropylene, some abs plastic (becl careful of warping) and soft PVC plastics usually resist it. It's best to paint PVC and abs plastic. The only thing I'd use dye for is the hips/shoulder/elbow joints of transformers, tmnt weapons, and revoltech joints. Paint everything else.
