Thread Question: Do you prefer to stick to actual bugs, or are you open to designs that just take some cues from bugs, such as some takes on aliens in sci-fi settings?

Alien or no, if it's got chitin and an abdomen, it's alright in my books. I think "Alien" is the best way to explain anthro bugs anyway. Conceivably we could make a human-like cat if we tinkered with its genes enough, but I'm not sure we could ever get close with arthropods.

I think any design with both an abdomen and chitin is probably trying to go for a full bug anyways rather than just bug-adjacent

I'm guessing that's a vote for the former option?

I mean, reality bugs are not really appropriately sized for those sorts of activities, are they...
>>
>>81438363
I mean "stick to actual bugs" as in sticking to designs based on existing bugs, while the latter option would be something closer to aliens like eliksni or stellaris arthropoids

Whelp, I can definitively say that I sincerely loath the new SoFurry. Tried reading a couple stories on the list that were from that site, but the new facelift is an utter eyesore. The new presets go too hard in either being too dark or too bright, with the layout of the paragraphs set in such a way that I have to activate their new dyslexic mode to make it more tolerable. To add on to those woes, the way the comments, description and tags are organized on the site... I get the idea of what they were going for, but the execution was botched from the word go. The old layout was perfectly serviceable and inoffensive, whereas this new redesign reeks of Web 3.0 enshittification for the sake of it. Apparently the site admin wanted to revamp SoFurry into some social media like site, but with the number they have, I have no idea why he thought that was a good idea.

At the bare minimum, there exists the ability to download your favorites, but even then that comes with a paywall. They *still* have not given you the ability to organize and search said favorites via their tags, and there does not seem any good way to scrape the sections you want without running into other issue the site presents.

Say, screencapping art pieces that have a story attached in the description. This new layout precludes that ability, forcing a clumsy copy/paste bullshit, whereas the old way was just one screenshot away in a neat package. Good lord, is there anyone that actually likes this new format? It wouldn't be so bad if there were the ability to better configure it, but it seems the current layout is the only one fit for anyone and everyone.

Oh well, at least I still got a couple old pieces stashed. But they seem to have screwed the Epub function, seeing as it now downloads a text file instead. Better than nothing I guess. But that's one more site warping their old layout in favor of... Whatever this is.

As for the thread tax, I usually err on the former. Specifically for the likes of ants, bees, and wasps. But if an artist can make an alien form work, I can jive with that. Regarding anatomy, I usually visualize any set that come to mind to be more insectoid/arachnoid in nature, having more mammalian hardware underneath with an actual skeleton, red blood, a pseudo carapace/chitin overlaid with a smooth transition to "skin" in areas like the hands, feet, breast area, while having some more novel features based off of the bugs they are based on. Maybe some adjustments for the abdomen and throax to accommodate bipedal or taur based movement. Plus further accommodations made for clothing design and the like.

Take this arachness for instance, and how her clothing, armor and gear are built with her form factor in mind. She strikes a good balance as a arachnoid taur, with the artist having a good balance of elements to make her distinct and stand out from your humanoid species whilst still appearing intelligent in terms of her facial features. While I cannot draw worth a damn, I've tried a similar approach with a vespoid beedrill character, tailoring features to suit wings, abdomen, and a difference stance due to their legs originating from the thorax. For whatever reason, most folks seem content to keep the abdomen as an extension of the spine in a tail like manner. Nothing wrong with that, just different tastes for different folks.

Doesn't help I had to sort through the list of sofurry stories a while ago and replace the links with updated ones because they for some reason change how they handled post links and didn't provide redirects from old links to new ones, in addition to search just straight up not working sometimes even if you put the exact full title of the work in. Some of the links still haven't been replaced because either the search just won't give the story to me or it doesn't exist anymore

Oh yeah, that too. I have old browsing sessions I like to revisit in combination of tree style tabs that I use as another form of tiered bookmarks for better visual representation, seeing as how links can so easily be lot.

Lo and behold, *all* of them were busted at the start of SoFurry's beta. I think they did make a patch for that, but I find myself repulsed from using the site in a similar manner to what happened to Smack Jeeves when that Korean company acquired it and gave it that horrid facelift that ended up shuttering the site a year later due to user exodus. There are sites like Inkbunny and Weasyl, but their archive is not as large as the more old standbys like SoFurry and FurAffinity. The former of which apparently had even more site drama to dig into, back when they changed from Yiffstar to SoFurry. I came on to the scene about six months to a year after made that transition, so I missed the boat on that drama. But it was apparently such an awful transition that multiple creators that were on there for close to a decade shuttered their profiles and purged their works in protest. The latter needs no explanation, and as of recent they have become a lot more aggressive with their implementation of Cloudflare settings in the last couple of weeks. I have to use an entirely different browser for that site now, seeing as they don't play nice with the extensions I have.

Fun fact, FurAffinity has two different captchas. One for when you login. Another for when you use their search engine, with the latter somehow being even more restrictive than the login one.

As for the other options, who knows? They seem stable enough, but again, they lack the critical mass that the other sites offer. Better than nothing, and there are people that cross post, but... Eh... Well, at least they are not utter eyesores.

Also, what the hell is with the new Captcha? Seems a lot more anal than it was about a month ago. Is it for AI image recognition training?

Who knows, it's probably a mix of things that go into the new captcha, all I know is that it's annoying when it decides to fail on a correct guess because of however they have it set
