if you don't molest who's in the seat next to you first, they're gonna molest you. never sleep, always be on guard. they poison the food to give you maximum farts, which amuses them greatly because of the fact that you're in a giant metal tube. make sure to hit on every flight attendant, even the gay ones, otherwise they'll spit in your ginger ale. don't ask me how i know

>what is it actually like going on a plane for 12 hours?
it's great. i love long flights. i like the feeling of being disconnected from the world for a bit and just not having to do very much, while being carried to a place i want to go to
>hot? cold?
it can get a bit chilly on some airlines. they give you a blanket.
>stuffy?
no. the air on a plane is entirely replaced about every 15 minutes. people who complain about planes being stuffy are either suffering from a mild form of claustrophobia or just being plain ignorant
>is the food really that bad?
very dependent on the airline and what you like to eat. personally i have had food that ranges from extremely delicious to utter shit. but it's also quite subjective.
>will i be able to sleep?
yes probably, for a while at least
>what do you bring for the journey?
books mainly. emergency chocolate/cereal bar
>what tips have you got for traveling on long flights?
just relax and enjoy it

Longest flight for me was 10 hours. I don't mind it if I'm buzzed up. Worst thing is you get all stiff from sitting in the same position for so long. Otherwise just bring some vidya to pass the time, preferably something that gives you a dopamine rush.

>what is it actually like going on a plane for 12 hours?
If you're a mature adult it's not too bad. I use it as an opportunity to meditate. Sometimes I'll watch all three Lord of the rings movies when I do 14 hrs to Japan.
>hot? cold? stuffy?
The air can be very dry but most modern jets aren't too bad. Slacks with a wool long sleeve usually keep me comfy.
>is the food really that bad?
I fast in order to buffer my jetlag. Based on snacks I"ve had in tthe past it's edible. Normies complain too much in general but those airline food jokes have a basis in truth.
>will i be able to sleep?
If you are me then absolutely not unless you are tired to the point of comatose. Avoid seats near the engines if you are trying to sleep.
>what do you bring for the journey?
Just a 16L back pack carry on and a neck wallet for my documents.
>what tips have you got for traveling on long flights?
Buy the most ticket you can afford. You won't really know your tolerance for things until you fly a long haul flight. Be aware of deep vain thrombosis if you are older or have circulation problems.
>>
>>2855055
Most of the time it's slightly cold, bring sweatpants and a sweatshirt. Personally even if I'm coming from a hot destination and I'm wearing gym shorts I'll still bring sweatpants in my bag and then change into the sweatpants after take off.
The air is not stuffy because they circulate air in from the outside.
Food depends on the airline, for the most part in economy it's gotten better than where it was 10-15 years ago.
>will i be able to sleep?
Personally I have a very hard time sleeping in economy. I use a manta sleep mask + earplugs + one of those neck pillow wraps. I experimented with buying a full on neck brace but it still wasn't providing the proper support. I'll be able to sleep but after a while (like 1-2 hours) my neck will hurt and I'll wake up, shift position, and then sleep again for a little while.
>what do you bring for the journey?
I like to bring a book + 3-4 pre-downloaded podcasts
>what tips have you got for traveling on long flights?
Pretty much all the long haul flights will have 2 aisles, if you're picking your seat you want to find where the "connector" galleyway is and then get the seats in the middle seating section right behind the galleyway (so it's in front of you) where they typically have the baby bassinets, sometimes there's a couple there traveling with a baby but the legroom is worth it imo. I've made the mistake in the past of getting the emergency exit row where there isn't a galleyway so people just stand in that emergency exit area right in front of you while they wait for the bathroom. Also I've made the mistake of sitting in that baby bassinet row where there isn't a connector galleyway so people just WALK RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU to get from one aisle to the next if their aisle's bathroom is full.
Last tip if you drink do NOT overdo it, you don't want to wake up mid flight with a hangover. Get a little tipsy to help you sleep and that's it.
Stay hydrated and get up to walk every 2-4 hours or so.
>>
Bring slippers. You'll want to take off your shoes for a flight that long, but you don't want to interact with all the poo and mucus on the floor either (especially in the toilet) and a pair of slippers avoids both points of discomfort. Premium classes often include a complementary pair for a reason.

idk why people say planes are cold bc to me they always feel super super hot and I sweat uncontrollably on them. I had two 7 hour flights a few days ago and even though I wore my lightest tshirt by the end of both flights my back was covered in sweat simply from sitting against the chair. and no I'm not fat
>>
>>
>>2855177
Being an autist, I carry a thermometer/hygrometer everywhere I go. Plane interiors have been as warm as 81° F on Air Arabia. No I didn't sweat in that temp because I'm heat-acclimated and literally not fat (belly fat pinch test less than ½"). The low humidity, as low as 15% RH, makes 74° F on a plane feel quite cool. Most Thirdies wear jackets or long sleeve shirts when flying for that reason. The dryness can give sinusfags a stuffy nose. After 12 hours on the plane (and 24+ hours awake) my eyes are as bloodshot as somebody who has taken a glug of cannabis moonshine. Personally I much prefer drinking tea or coffee to stay awake during the flight, versus feeling drowsy and unable to sleep.
>inb4 lie flat seats
Such luxuries are for pampered yuppies who have never endured any kind of physical hardship in their entire lives. I can handle 30 hours without sleeping quite easily, as long as it's not a routine occurrence. Two or three times a year is A-OK.
>>2855170
You're the one who has to sit there with an itchy butthole wearing underpants fouled by shart dampness for the next 30 hours. Not us. It's nothing to gloat over.

Oh, and if you want to play air travel on ezpz mode, just load up a game of Civ5. Make sure to put it on max difficulty and re-roll maps for half the flight to pass the time.
Make sure you download all your build order guides beforehand, so you can larp as a deity-crusher.

Planes to me can weirdly be both slightly cold and also really warm
I think they keep the plane warm in general, but then have really cold AC pouring in at all times, so what you experience is based on if you have good access to the AC or not.
>>
>>
>>2855226
>have a beer
although i generally drink quite a bit on flights (and in the lounge beforehand) i'm not a fan of drinking beer on board. even something non fizzy like british real ale tends to make me more farty and not in a nice way. there are some farts that you just can't trust
i generally prefer wine or whisky or rum on board. all of them if possible.

wallet/pouch you wear around your neck. People often buy them if they are traveling to a country with high theft/pickpocketing. The idea is that a pickpocket is going to have a much harder time lifting that off your neck without you noticing.
I use mine because it's large enough for phone/cards/passport/cash. Keeps everything in one pouch. Makes it easier to stay organized while going through security at an airport. Aesthetically it does scream tourist so ymmv if your trying to /fa/.

I just had a 11h flight with a cheap last minute business upgrade (a bit more than 400€ on a flight that is 1.1k round trip)
it was great, having a proper comfortable seat that can turn into a bed was glorious, meals were great instead of survival food
it does make me want to fly business for that yearly trip, but damn at best it triples the price
>>2855103
this is a HUGE comfort upgrade, like class upgrade tier
got the best flight ANC on the market (bose qcu headphones gen2 for 380€) and it makes a very clear difference, it's around the same cancellation (with music on) as my previous solution of earplugs + one of these construction work noise reduction headset, without the extreme uncomfortableness
this + regularly drinking water easily gets me through these flights, I used to just kinda tank it and get ego death naps mid flight, but now I bring at least one big water bottle (usually need 2) and get a center-side aisle seat for easy toilet access
>>2855744
using a trip bag so I have the whole leg space for my legs does help a bit, but yeah that's one of the main issues
>>
>>
>>2855886
Yeah I can see why now.
I only really take the plane for this yearly long haul month trip so for now it doesn't really make sense to do all that, but if/when I start flying for work more often I'll definitely look at it
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>2855948
i know you are probably just making a smelly pajeets joke but the answer is yes
on air india, after the safety demo/video, they play another video, showing how to flush the toilet. millions of people in india don't have a flush toilet at home and chances are there will be a few people on every flight who have never used one before
unfortunately, some people ignore the video, and just shove random stuff in the toilet no matter how many times they are warned not to.
i was on an air india domestic flight once. one of the toilets got blocked. there was shitty water running in the plane aisle. kind of sloshing backwards and forwards as the plane ascended and descenced. the crew don't really care, they probably see it multiple times every day

I dunno why people get pissed at this scenario. I love watching idiots leap up and then stand there awkwardly with their head half under the overhead compartment for 20 minutes while we pull up to the gate and the ground crew does all their things.

samefag. on a recent flight i flew emirates business class. there's a bar at the back of the upper deck. i went there, ordered some mid-level whiskey, only because i could and I had never flown emirates business before. Start chatting up this chick who's trying to get the wifi working so she can do an insta live. she's probably one of those port-a-potty escorts. i told her i was staying at a baller hotel near the Wiz Khalifa. She seems interested in me, occasionally touching my arm and shoulder, laughing and giggling. I get her insta and number and told her I'd hit her up that night. I hit her up that night, but no response. Fkn bitch, was probably getting pissed on.

yeah it is. flown business on Etihad twice. one was a short haul A320 NEO...nothing special. But the other was on a Dreamliner. That was probably my favourite business class experience. The seat I had was facing backwards, I've never seen anything like it on a plane. The food, the drinks, the service, everything about it was top notch. Wished it was longer, only 7 hour flight from AUH - HKG. My next goal is to fly Etihad business on a a350-1000 from SYD - AUH, 14 hour flight.

Sleep is very difficult in economy.
Book an overnight flight. Take a 15-20k walk during the day. Hit the gym and get a proper 1 hr in. Then have a warm soupy meal before you board the plane. Hopefully the exhaustion and warm food will help you fall asleep quickly
>>
>>
>>2856452
At a certain point time/quality/experience is more valuable than money.
Spending $300 on your flight out means you're operating at an average of 80% capacity on your travels.
Spending $1000 on your flight out means you're operating at an average of 90% capacity.
If you're planning to spend $5k over 14 days, then that 10% difference in value ($500) starts to claw itself back.
>>
>>2856452
I personally like to keep a distance to other people. I can do that without problems in a cheaper and smaller hotel room. I cannot do that in economy class because there passengers are treated like cattle. So I usually choose to rather spend the money on a business class ticket.
>>
>>
>>2856498
That's why i mentioned an average. If you start your holiday with a fucked up sleep cycle, random naps, grumpiness, you're going to see around 3 days impacted.
A 4 hour nap/extra sleep over 14 days is already around 2% of your entire time awake.
If you've robbed yourself of 8 hours decent sleep on the flight, it will catch up and cost.
>>
>>
>>2856452
you have to understand that not everyone is in the same situation as you. you travel with a budget in mind and make trade-offs on where and how to spend your money. other people have larger budgets because theyre not poor (for example, me), and paying for a business class ticket doesn't take away the ability to stay at the hotel I want.
that being said, I still do make trade-offs. I'm this nigga >>2856398. I flew emirate business class into Dubai and stayed at the Conrad. But I took the metro to the airport to the hotel. I flew out of Abu Dhabi so I caught the metro to some station and caught the public bus to abu dhabi airport, when I could have caught a taxi for not that much. I caught an Etihad business class flight out.
you wouldn't fly business class and probably wouldn't stay at the conrad. but we're 2 very different people, in different situations, making different decisions.
>>
>>2856493
> I personally like to keep a distance to other people
Have you ever flown first class? You barely notice that there are other people in the cabin. What I don't like is the business class cabin in the middle upper deck on an a380. altouhgh youre in your own seat, I found it hard to relax because there's so many people and it's so busy. people talking, moving up and down the cabin. the toilets have lines. shithead kids making noise. I've flown this on Qantas and Emirates and found it to be the same.
>>
>>
>>2856452
The same old poorfag fallacy that gets posted here on every flight thread. For those who can afford to fly business or first, it's not taking away from anything else. I spend more on my comfy business class ticket, and I spend on a comfy 5star hotel. If I spent less money on the plane ticket it would not change my hotel or spending plans since I can afford it.
>>
>>2856593
>Have you ever flown first class?
Yes, a few times. Although only the old Lufthansa first class on 747-8i planes. The seats and meals are great. Two washrooms for just eight people is fantastic. The level of privacy is okay, but certainly not like the level other airlines offer. If I have enough miles to upgrade or get a free upgrade, it is worth it. I would not directly book it or pay the ~€1.5k for a cash upgrade again.

Yeah it sucks.
I don't mind being around other people or anything. The temperature, stuffiness, food, none of that stuff ever bothers me. I'm a low maintenance person in those ways.
It's just sitting in a cramped seat for that long inevitably hurts your body in some way. Sleeping is indeed difficult but I have trouble sleeping in any circumstance. I recommend bringing melatonin, benadryl, anything similar that makes you sleep always. I never go anywhere without this stuff. Otherwise you just need maximum distractions. Whatever it is that works for you movies, games, whatever. Anything and everything that will make the time go faster.
I also highly recommend fasting in advance.

>Otherwise you just need maximum distractions. Whatever it is that works for you movies, games, whatever.
And how would you enjoy that in economy if the person in front of you reclines his seat and there is less than one foot of space between your nose and the seat?
>>2857076
That may be true but unfortunately JAL's international flights seem to land mostly at NRT, which is a lot worse than HND.

This is my experience, but I think it psychosomatic. I get vertigo and claustrophobia, and I feel pain throughout my body being on an airplane. Sweat uncontrollably. Same thing happens to me when I play VR games. One of the worst experiences to me desu. I throw up about half the times I fly.

I'm a reasonably healthy guy. Exercise regularly. 6'0, 175 lbs, healthy (in a better than average sense) heartrate and blood pressure. I just get motion sickness. On boats too. I flew all the time as a child and I threw up back then too.

I'm 6'2'' and ~215 pounds, and flying economy is torture unless I can get an exit row seat. I will often fall asleep right after take off but never for more than about 20 minutes. After that, pure misery- can't get comfortable, can't fall back asleep. Xanax does help but usually not worth it if somehow I still can't fall asleep and get stuck in drugged exhaustion mode.
If you're a manlet just bring a book and something to watch/listen to, and you'll be fine. No one under 6' has any business complaining about flying. And I'm not complaining. Flying is miraculous. The distance travelled and speed of travel vs price is unreal. If they offered even cheaper flights where everybody had to stand and hold onto to overhead bars like crowded trains I would do it if flying solo.
That said, when my wife and I and our two kids fly to Australia from middle American to visit family, we are paying for the best seats they offer.
TLDR: be tallfag and marry into money.
>>
>>2858160
I'm 6'2" but as a full biological male with no estrogen...broad in the shoulders, narrow in the hips and legs. All airplane seats fit my butt just fine, with about two inches between kneecaps and seat back when my feet are under the seat, but the other passenger constantly brushing and bumping my arm hairs gets mildly annoying on a long flight, especially if they are wearing a loose jacket.

air is dry and medium temperature to cold, you can see people with t-shirts or sweaters, everybody has different tolerances, it's about 20 degrees which may be a little cold when you're just sitting
>is the food really that bad?
it's average to bad, airline depending. luckily (european) humans can survive 12 hours without food. you can always eat before the flight.
>will i be able to sleep?
unclear, I can't sleep a minute, some people sleep from takeoff to touchdown.

Melbourne, Australia here. Most my flights are long.
Its exhausting. You think you can get by by sleeping or watching just a few long films, but you can't. You can't just change sitting positions or anything, nod off for a bit and you'll get an elbow in your ribs from the passenger next to you or some stewardess waking you to ask if you want beef or chicken. Try being stoned or drunk for the whole time? Attendants are very very very quick to cut you off, not serving you anything at all for just shyly stuttering "C-can I have a whiskey and coke?", never mind that most my flights route through Asia, so they think you are drunk after 3 shots. Plus no matter what you do you'll get sick afterwards, always some annoying cold that lasts forever.
If I had the cash I would just stop in Singapore for a couple days then do the next leg of the journey.

my worst flight ever was a return trip from Japan. I was already pretty depressed at the perspective of returning to wage slaving but to make it worse I got sick last couple days of my trip and was still feeling pretty bad on my flight. I got some paracetamol pills and shit but it still sucked balls. I would sweat and then get shivers and then sweat again. All while sitting in an airplane chair for 14 hours next to a stranger. I managed to sleep for good chunk of the flight but I had fever dreams, those half-awake ones, in which flight attendants were trying to strangle me lmao
I remember waiting for boarding, sitting on a plastic chair in Narita airport with stuffy nose and aching throat late in the evening with all shops and cafes already closed, was desperately looking for something warm to drink but all the vending machines only had cold drinks. There was a TV switched on in the waiting area with Wolf Children airing, I was watching it half conscious with some Japanese girl sitting next to me, hoping I wouldn't pass out before the flight.
So yeah my tip is have some fever medicine with you on longer flights just in case, also some warm jacket or sweater because it tends to get cold on an airplane.

I don't travel business often but I've done some long hauls in emirates biz upstairs. Every time I go to take a piss, the bar lady says "another drink?" and of course, I'm bored as shit, so it's yes every time, which leads me to need to piss more which leads to more drinks.
Then I make a fool of myself to the people chilling in the lounge who actually belong there while I'm looking like that /trv/ banner with the bamboo hat

If you're a solid sleeper then take a night flight so you can be unconscious for 66-75% of the journey which is what I usually try to do. If I have to go on a long flight during American daylight hours I just play EU 3 and get schlitzed on shampoo bottle gin and the time goes blowing out my ass.

>I'm nervous as fuck
op back again
surprised my thread is still alive.
I was also nervous about traveling, but then i realized hundreds of people fly every day: if they can do it, surely you can.
i also figured out what was bothering me; i didn't understand the process or have backup plans. simply record all your plane dates/times so you don't miss any, and plan alternatives.
like trains and busses for example, i used to be really scared of them but simply find what train you want to get, but also find out the two or three either side and alternate routes just in case.
still have not flown but just applied for my travel papers.
at one point i got a massive wave of daunting anxiety, but then i remembered i can just figure everything out. there will be cafes, shops, restaurants. i won't starve, i will have shelter if it rains. and i will just figure out everything i need to travel. then do it. point A to point B, find food, find shelter ???? PROFIT!
