The real draw of Hualien is the dogs. There are hundreds of friendly, well-fed "community dogs" roaming all around the city but especially near the beach. You can rent a place near the beach, buy a box of doggie treats, and spend every day blissfully getting knotted by two or three different dogs. It's been a bit over a decade since I went and I still get hard every time I think about my trip there.

The beach is neat to listen to. The water comes in, soaks the rocks, then rushes out back into the ocean between them, so you hear this sort of hissing noise that I've never heard at any other beach before.

There's also Taroko Gorge, which is worth a day trip with a decent guide. A lot of the local cab drivers can give you a solid tour of Taroko; they'll drop you off at one end of a walkway and pick you up on the other end after you've walked through to admire that stretch of scenery.

Left Thailand after a week filthy place, overtourusted in a big way, dishonest people, angry locals, aggressive young men wanting to fight. Went to laos, much better.

Left a few counties after major terror attacks. Won't name them. The whole place just emptied out overnight so there was no fun to be had, police everywhere, travel warnings, tours cancelled. Left Spain because of a historic heat wave.
