For Europe
>favorite so far
Probably Germany. City-wise, it's close between Berlin or Budapest, but I think Berlin ekes it out, plus Germany has more to offer as a whole country (though I'd need to explore more of both)
>least favorite
Honestly Austria, though granted, I did only go to Vienna. Really want to explore more, but Vienna alone was kinda meh. I did really like a lot of the attractions, but idk compared to the others I just thought it was ok. The day trip to Bratislava was honestly more memorable.
For North America
>favorite so far
I'm biased but PA really has everything. Other than that I guess I'd go Massachusetts. I loved the southwest, but I only really stayed in Vegas and went to a bunch of national parks in each, so hard to pick the best state overall. Also CO I need to explore more
>least favorite
Hard to pick anything but NJ so far, though I am nostalgic for Atlantic City and the shore in general. Honestly I'm tempted to put NY as my least favorite, just because the majority of upstate NY is such a shithole and NYC honestly does not make up for it
>going next
Georgia and Armenia. I have high expectations. Hope I didn't fall for a meme.

If I had to pick a favorite, I guess it's Turkey. Great sights variety (Greek ruins, Byzantine churches, Islamic architecture), fantastic food. I've never had any bad experiences with the people, everyone was always helpful and friendly. Used to be cheap too, which is always fun.
I don't think I've actively disliked any place in Europe. I can't bring myself to visit Scandinavia since the only thing on offer really is the nature and I can get that for a fifth of the price in the third world. So it's essentially stuck on an unfortunate eternal backburner.

>Why did you go to Northern Ireland
A girl I was dating, I made the most of it because I like history and saw some local sights
>have you really never been to England
I've been to N England once or twice as a very young child but I don't count because I don't remember anything including where I went, and I've never went as an adult.
I like english people, well the real ones, I like the outdoors and european culture so I will go some sort of road trip to England but likely somewhere like the cotswolds or the south-west, I have no interest in visiting bleak english cities, although my great grandfather is on some WW2 memorials in London as he's a famous pilot so I'll have to go to London at some point

I thought Vienna was okay but nothing special, I've been 3 times: Vienna, Salzburg and most recently Innsbruck and the countryside or smaller cities are beautiful and local culture and outdoor trails and activities have been amazing, I'd go back to the Austrian alps but not neccesarily Vienna so that makes sense.
>Berlin
I haven't really considered it even though I want to go to more of Germany, I went to Munich which I used basically as a base to visit the Bavarian alps including Fussen, Mittenwald and Garmisch which were amazing. I've also been to Nurnburg and Augsburg and didn't really like it, for me tourism in germany seems like smaller villages and resort towns are more ideal to the large cities for the same reasons as the UK or France

As a context for my map:
-Half of France is just lost.
-I've traveled more outside of Europe than in Europe.
-I've mixed feelings about England because i went when it wasn't as hellish as it is today, so i have good memories about childhood trips. It is what it is.

favorite: catalonia in spain
tarragona -> lleida -> barcelona -> girona was such a nice trip
I had a broken arm, so I couldn't actually go swimming at the beach, which kinda sucked.
however the history and other activities (like hiking) more than made up for it.
least favorite: andorra
it pretty much felt like all those social media influencers who are posting in dubai, but the mediterranean version of that. so it gave me iffies.
the nature was extremely nice though.

I haven't visited too many different countries because I usually travel to countries I already know and like. Either way:
>favorite
I love Italy and France. I visit Sicily at least once every two years and there's always something to do. Favorite cities probably Catania and Syracuse, Palermo is also great. And if anyone ever visits South Tyrol, make a stop in Meran and visit the Botanical Garden, one of the prettiest places in Europe. France I'm a sucker for Paris although I have a soft spot for Southern France as well. I also had a blast in Riga, very underrated city, both in summer and in winter.
>least favorite
I've honestly never had a bad time abroad.

If I had to rank 5 countries in order:
>Italy
>Kyrgyzstan
>Georgia
>USA/China (I can't pick between the two. China has epic history and great food/USA has guns and hot easy chicks. Both have mix of really cool people and epic scenery. Also, both are crazy insular)
>France
>Favourite Country
Italy
and it blows my mind how despite being only the second country I ever visited, no country has beaten it since. Literally is top tier in every respect.
>Favourite country besides Italy
Kyrgyzstan
By far the least developed country I have visited which is perhaps why as I despise the modern world and all its amenities and conveniences for its soullessness but also Kyrgyzstan is almost like a dreamlike country, the sky is always blue, mountains are everywhere and the people are so sweet it is unreal.
>Least favourite
Guatemala
Actually the ONLY country i've visited that I don't really like. Partly because I came from Mexico which has such a cool distinct culture with its own food, its own style, its own character and Guatemala is like all the shit aspects of mexico but without any of the cool parts. Guatemalan food is shit and they have no style.

OP I have some questions about Scotland. My gf and i plan to go next May or the year after. I'll have realistically 10 full days in the country. We are looking at staying in Inverness/Nairn area. We both wanna see castles/landscapes. I specifically would like to play golf 2-3 times. Questions are:
>Is the Scotsrail pretty reliable for getting around the Highlands?
>Which currency in the Highlands is mostly accepted?
>Are the Outer Herbrides worth getting to? (seems like a time dump but im interested)
>What is a must in Edinburgh?
>What are Highland tourist traps?
>Any scotch distilleries you recommend?
>Any golf courses you recommend for or against for a yank?
Thanks Scots bro.

It's less about how different the countries are and more about the effort required to travel. In Europe, literally any teenager can hop on a train and visit a new country every weekend. They don't even need a passport in most cases.
It's like someone from Detroit traveling to Toronto, or from Los Angeles to Tijuana. Yeah you're technically traveling, but I wouldn't call it "abroad"
>>
>>2866429
I need to get up early to catch my two hour plane to Sicily and experience a completely different people, culture, language, history and architecture. That’s enough effort for me. Not too early tho because the airport is just half an hour away from my home by train. Sucks to be American I guess.
>>
>>2866429
You say that but for americans how many of them actually travel to different states? Yeah on the east coast maybe they frequent neighbouring states but most people have rarely left their states. I'm not saying to different states is like going to different countries but making the point that going to a different country in europe still requires a significant amount of effort and expense. Most people in europe have been to few euro countries unless they really genuinely like to travel

Favourite so far: Country: None. City: Krakow.
Least Favourite: Luxembourg (not that its a bad place, though it was raining which rendered the countryside out of the question and its limited for things to do).
>>2864990
When you put it like that, probably Germany. Its not a completely different experience in each city but varied enough that going to cities can be fresh there. Its also very accessible outside of cities.
Was tempted to cross through the Bratislava and if I wasn't unwell at the time would have done. How was the 'Slava? Did you see the Blue Church? Were you able to fill in your day? Austrian countryside is great but the Tirol really takes it, even if you're not into Winter sports (I'm certainly not) the hiking and scenery are fantastic.
I agree on PA, such a great area, shame there's so many ruffians in the cities but alas. What did you like about Massachusetts? Did you meet J Mascis? How accessable were the state parks?
I thought Atlantic City was a poor man's Blackpool, didn't think it was possible for such a thing to exist! Its alright but the boardwalk and casinos being the only real attraction... its not for me. What did you enjoy?
>>
>>2864999
Hehehe, what took you to Tallinn? Ooh, any East Asian countries in particular? Also are there any places in Ontario and Quebec you'd seriously recommend? I remember that Family Guy skit about women in the 30s going to Montreal or whatever and hell 20 years ago it was great for indie music but I imagine any city in Canada will be straight shit... no offense. To its credit Toronto felt like an upscaled version of my uni town. Its crazy how similar Canada's towns look to the UKs when you compare them to America's. Even if the architecture (at least in NE USA) isn't THAT different.
>>2865180
Yeah, people in Turkey are ace, holy fuck the prices though! Istanbul's attractions are pricier than anything in Europe! I guess Scandinavia's nature is kinda tranquil though? Even if the landscape looks like it belongs in a sim game.
How was Slovenia? I remember it being shilled for a couple years when they tried making tourism a big thing there, but I've never been as the flights are always expensive and there never seems to be an easy way to fly to a neighbouring country and rail/ bus in.
>>2866179
Lost? As in foreigners? I did find Paris to be funny in that seeing actual French people was an oddity. But the foreigners themselves seemed alright and some of the Algerian fellas at one of the hotels gave me free beer. Belgium I sympathise with. Its such a bland country much like the Netherlands. Great to live in I imagine but as a tourist its like ehhh I'd rather be in well France or Germany.
>>2866369
What's so good about Edinburgh? Its such a meme tourist city. Also what went wrong with Dublin? I've visited a couple times pre-2023, it was boring as shit then and I assume it is now. Also *shock* don't talk smack about London! How can you even put Belfast above? The nature in NI is great but Belfast itself is so meeeeeh its like going to Bristol.

>How was the 'Slava? Did you see the Blue Church? Were you able to fill in your day?
I went to Devin Castle, then Bratislava castle, a local cafe, then the Christmas market in the main square, then the Soviet war memorial.
I enjoyed it. It easily has enough to fill a whole day, but also you can probably do everything in a day. It's kinda how I feel about Ottawa too. Worth a visit, but as a day trip. Only thing I missed out on was the food because I got sick and couldn't stomach anything more than some soup.
>What did you like about Massachusetts?
Been to Northampton, Salem, Gloucester, Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard. Never been to Boston, though it's on my list. I just really like the vibes, pretty coastal towns, good sea food. I went to Salem for Halloween once and had a blast. Coolest attraction in MA I've seen so far is Hammond castle. Most disappointing was the Calvin Coolidge library (it's literally just a single room inside a regular library). Didn't visit a single state park, though did in NH
>Atlantic City
It's kinda the go to beach vacation spot for people living in southeastern PA. I'm not really a beach fan anyway, but I prefer it to other beach spots because at least it has some pizzazz. Basically every part of the world has a place like Atlantic City these days, but for what it is it's not terrible.

>holy fuck the prices though! Istanbul's attractions are pricier than anything in Europe
It's a new development. Last time I've been there in 2022 I bought a museum pass that covered almost all the sites I wanted to see from Izmir to Istanbul, save for Dolmabahce and some minor exceptions here and there. I paid around 45 Euro (priced in Lira). Today the exact same pass costs 165 (priced in Euro). The watermelon seller really wants his hard currency.
As for Slovenia, to be honest I can't tell you much, at least nothing that'd be worthwhile today. I've only really been to Postojna cave and some small towns along the way as part of a longer car trip ~20 years ago. A revisit is on my to do list.

favourite so far: Malta and Turkey; Malta is a super interesting and beautiful country with rich culture and a fascinating history. It's really cheap and because it's so small it's really easy to travel around. The most fascinating thing about Malta is it's mishmash of cultures. Malta can easily be described as where Europe meets the Arab world. As for Turkey, I was a kid when I went so it was less about seeing the sites and experiencing the culture and more getting toys and the nice weather. Still pretty fun though.
least favourite: Easily Spain and France, both of these countries have completely undeserved reputations of being nice and luxurious places to visit when in reality both Spain and France are overpriced dumps. Not to mention the two nations have really leaned in to the tourist craze so they both booth feel like giant blackpool's.

why do americans abbreviate state names so much? You abbreviated Philadelphia but not Massachusetts despite the latter being much longer to write. Not even sure what CO is which is why this is frustrating in the first place.
>>
>>
>>2867172
Some state abbreviations are much more common in spoken language than others. You'll hear all the time people refer to Pennsylvania as "Pee-Ayy", but I have never heard anyone ever call Massachusetts "Em-Ayy", or "Maaaa".
CO is Colorado which, now that I think about it, is rarely ever abbreviated in spoken vernacular, at least not that I've heard, but still it's easier to just abbreviate.
It's not like this is unique to the US anyway. Everyone says BGC and CDMX

Got my magnets sorted
>>
>>2867292
It's unfortunate that most of those are the same design all made in the same factory. And the Haiti and African ones are AI slop.
Selections are more limited, but I always buy ones made in the country I'm visiting.
>>
>>2867292
have you been to Haiti recently?
I've been involved in an aid program there (family foundation)
but haven't returned since 2023
just too dangerous
also all security briefs / intelligence stopped during this time (from EU, as we are EU based and just get very basic information from the US)
still yearn for the isolate beaches near our house there
unironically one of the most beautiful places on earth
>>

I only got the magnet idea this year during a trip to Arizona, so I'm "catching up" with magnets for countries that I've visited before. I honestly really like the magnets I got for Canada, Europe, and Japan (good quality and I like the look): https://classicmagnets.com/more-magnets/international-map-magnets/
I couldn't find map magnets for Ghana and Burkina so I settled for ones that at least had the capitals named.

Not recently no, I went to Haiti with Food for the Poor about a decade ago

>>Is the Scotsrail pretty reliable for getting around the Highlands?
it should be if you're just going to inverness, if you're going more rural it's not ideal though but it's very hard to get to the most remote areas without a car
>>Which currency in the Highlands is mostly accepted?
just great british pound like everywhere else, also the highlands thrives on tourism so you can pay almost any legit place with card in my experience
>>Are the Outer Herbrides worth getting to? (seems like a time dump but im interested)
never been so can't say to be honest
>>What is a must in Edinburgh?
if you like outdoors Arthur's seat is a nice hill walk for good views in the Holyrood park next to the palace of Holyroodhouse which you can also go into, it was the royal palace before the uk. there's also obviously the national musuem and edinburgh castle which are close by one another for local history.
>>What are Highland tourist traps?
generally stuff like food and cafe's etc is quite expensive (I'm from the lowlands and everything is really cheap down here) but I'd guess it's probably cheap overpriced figures and scarves with tartans and stuff
I'd reccommend Glencoe, it's basically the stereotypical thing people think about when they think about the highlands. Further north there is the Glenfinnan Viaduct from harry potter which is a nice walk, shortly thereafter is Mallaig which is a really nice little village and this area has some of the best beaches in Scotland. Skye is probably the most beautiful part of Scotland and easily accessible from Mallaig by ferry
