planning on visiting in August to Tokyo or Osaka. Gonna bring a good buddy with. Is that a good time to go? I feel like Tokyo would have better nightlife.

I mostly just chilled for a week but I went to Kyoto I could actually go around the city without dealing with hordes of chink tourists which was nice. The weather was just right for exploring, I was there last september and going outside made me want to commit suicide. I went to Osaka Expo 2025 back then and I got to experience what Auschwitz prisoners felt as they were thrown in the ovens. What the locals call winter feels more like fall for normal people. I still got kinda sick of the few tourists that were in Kyoto so I took the train to Nara and chilled with the deer. Overall solid 8.5/10 experience, didn't get to do much though so next time I'm staying for 2 weeks minimum
>>
>>
Heading out to Japan tomorrow. 13 and half hour flight.
I kind of gave up on planning absolutely everything. Have no real plan for 2 week stay. Just general locations I want to visit.
I'm not sure even where I'll get the Welcome Suica card in Narita but hope it's easy.

Looks like a solid plan. Personally Tokyo was my favorite by far and I didn't care much for Osaka. If you find that osaka is too trashy consider taking the train to Kobe, there's a nice chinatown there with good restaurants

>I was there last september and going outside made me want to commit suicide.
Are the Japanese summers really that bad? Kinda tempted to go to Japan again in late August/early September this year, but I do plan to maybe head northward to Tohoku and Hokkaido after landing in Tokyo.
>>
first time international traveler. booked for 16 days in June, landing in Narita in the early afternoon.
How should I split up Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka/day trips?
I've been told it's better to end in Tokyo, for shopping purposes. So, should I allocate maybe a 7 day block for Kyoto as homebase, do Osaka and other shit as day trips, then move onto Tokyo mainbase+day trips for the next 9?
>>
>>
>>2865635
Just my two cents since you're asking, but I haven't actually been to around the Chugoku region myself. I'm going there this year around a similar time as you (late spring). I'm planning on visiting Onomichi as a day trip from Hiroshima, but other locations I'm planning on going to in the region are:
>Hiroshima for Shukkeien Garden, the Peace Park, and Miyajima
>Okayama for the Korakuen Garden and Okayama Castle
>Okayama for the Kibitsuhiko Shrine and Kibitsu Shrine
>Kurashiki for the Bikan Historical Quarter
>Takahasi for the Bitchu-Matsuyama Castle
There's also the Kure Maritime Museum in the region with the 1/10 scale Yamato model, but personally I'm not too interested in that. There's also Northern Shikoku:
>Marugame for Marugame Castle and Kotohiragu, can also get to Takaya Shrine from Marugame
>Takamatsu for Ritsurin Koen and Yashima
>>

>but I'm canadian so it was a shock to the system
Ah okay. that makes sense. Any notable experience with the supposed typhoon season that happens around September? I haven't been to Japan during the August-September period, my past trips have been during much more mild seasons like in early spring (late Mach to April) or mid autumn (October).

Any free alternative for the Sakura Navi app for sakurameme?
Having a thousand spots with their blooming date on a handy map will be useful, not necessarily because I'll want to go to these spot, but if I'm in an area and it's just a 10min detour for some low-mid spot, then why the fuck not.
Worst comes to worst I'll just buy the App, it's not like it'll ruin me. But I made sure I never bought any App since smartphones exist.

When people talk about cherry blossoms, they always mention the Yoshino cherry trees, but right now the Kawazu cherry trees are in full bloom. Just a 10-minute walk from JR Sobu Line Hirai Station or a 15-minute walk from Toei Subway Higashi-Ojima Station, the embankment along the old Nakagawa River is lined with Kawazu cherry trees in full bloom. Compared to Yoshino cherry trees, Kawazu cherry blossoms last longer, allowing you to enjoy hanami well into March.

People from Southeast Asia say Japanese summers are insufferable and far worse than anything they've ever experienced, if that tells you anything. You simply will not cool off and you will not feel like you can relax until you're back in your hotel, AC on high, taking a shower.
I live here and July to November, sometimes even December, are just the worst weather I've experienced anywhere. The sun beats down and doesn't relent, humidity is maxed out, temperatures reach about 40 C/105 F, and you can't even take a deep breath because the air is so damp that you choke on it. Nights are worse than daytime because the humidity rises while the temperature only drops about 2 degrees. And every single day is the same temperature. It'd be better if some days were extra hot and some days were cooler, but no, you'll get a full 3 months where the weather is exactly the same every single day. And if it rains, it doesn't feel any better. It feels worse because the rain is hot and just makes you feel even warmer.

That sounds fine enough. Osaka doesn't really have much to offer (saying this will piss off people who get drunk with other foreigners and make that their whole trip) so making Kyoto the main during your time in that area would be fine.
>>
>>
>>2865875
>get drunk with other foreigners
is that an Osaka thing? I wanted to have that experience at least once, thought it'd be more common in tokyo
on that note, where would one go to get drunk with random young japanese people? or are they generally not intrigued by foreigners?
>>
>>
>>
>>2865886
Your best place to get drunk with young Japanese people was 6 years ago in Japan. Now some people might still drink with you, but a growing majority are just tired of foreigners and will avoid locations where they see them.
If you want to go to a bar and get drunk, just go. Maybe a Japanese person will want to talk to you. But it's increasingly a Bali situation where any place you go will be a few dozen other drunk tourists and locals stay far away in their own communities.
>>
>>

Speaking about that, just wondering, how does the IC card recovery process work anyway assuming you lose it? I grabbed a full ICOCA card last time I was in Osaka, but I read online that ICOCA cards can't be registered unless you have an Apple phone. Would the code on the back of the card be enough to recover it?
>>
>>2865891
Oh i thought anon said regular suica cards. I got my regular one from narita airport.
>why do people get welcome suicas?
Haneda airport in 2024 didnt have any regular ones when i went so i had to get the welcome one. It was fine enough, but knowing the regular one i got last year hasnt expired is so much nicer.

its hot! i was told by a friend that late septmeber was still hot. so i checked weather statistics of the places i was going and planned my trip for mid october. it didnt even matter, Kyoto and Osaka were hot as hell even in october. in fact when i looked at the climate data, the temperatures were consistently in the top percentile for heat, well above average consistently.
i think november and jan february may be the best times to go to japan. being super hot is way worse than a little chilly

I got an opportunity to study abroad in Japan from mid-September to early February (~4 months). This isn’t a vacation or 2-week anime pilgrimage, I’d be enrolled full-time and working toward my degree.
I’d actually be living there, dealing with classes, daily life, culture shock, language barrier, all of it, not just tourist highlights.
It’s a big decision. Cost, being away from home, adjusting to a different academic system. But it’s also a rare opportunity and I might not get another shot like this.
tl;dr; For anyone who’s lived in Japan long-term: was it worth it? Would I regret not going? Trying to decide between taking the leap or staying comfortable.
I’ll be honest my niggers, I'm a weeaboo. I’ve got a lot of respect for Japan’s culture, tech, anime, and games, so I know I’d enjoy being there.
But part of me wonders if I’m romanticizing it. I could always just visit later as a tourist instead of committing to four months abroad for school. Decisions, decisions.
>>
>>2865935
You're probably romanticizing it but it's still great and you will have a great time despite being slightly disappointed. 4 months in another country really isn't that big of a deal since you won't be uprooting your entire life, so just go for it
>>
>>
>>
>>2865935
You will absolutely regret not going. You can travel to a country at any age, but the years in which you can live somewhere as a student and be immersed in that lifestyle are very limited.
Even if it somehow sucks ass, you're going to look back on those days for the rest of your life. Think: you could be comfortable at home for a few months, but those months will just be a blur when you look back on them 20 years from now, but you'll absolutely remember those months you spent in Japan no matter what. And if you love it, being a student would transfer quite easily into working in Japan. If you hate it, then you just go home after your time is done. But if you visit Japan years later only as a tourist without ever doing a study abroad, it's a lot harder to get your foot in the door and you'll forever have that regret.
One of my biggest life regrets is letting myself get bound down by a girlfriend in college. I missed out on countless opportunities to experience new things because I thought I should stay home and be with her. She cheated on me and disappeared the first month of my last year of college. At that point it was too late for any sort of study abroad. Every single one of my friends talked about how great their study abroad time was, and I fucked it all up for a girl who didn't give a shit about me. Ultimately I did move away from America years later, but I'll always regret not taking that chance when I had it. Four years of college were spent doing the same shit every damn day when I could've had months of wild adventures as a student and not needing to worry about bills and other responsibilities.
>>
>>
>>2865935
I'm currently studying at a language school (not uni by any means, but still a school) and I would recommend doing it. Not taking chances like this is what I was missing in life. It's fun being an alien for several months and exploring your passions.

I spent 5 days in Tokyo and 5 in Kyoto with a layover near Mt Fuji between back in September 2023. Here was my experience:
>Tokyo
Very humid and hot but pleasant at night and morning. Overcast skies throughout with one or two days of very heavy rain.
>Fuji
Warm but not as bad as the cities. Sunny with broken clouds stuck to the mountains until later afternoon when it got overcast and almost too cold to be outside in just a t-shirt. Next day brilliant sunshine.
>Kyoto
Generally sunny, one day of very heavy rain.
In other words, the best thing you can do for yourself is pack long, loose linen clothing, maybe a light wool sweater just in case, and acquire an umbrella on site. Denim, heavier cotton, and poly blends will fuck you in the ass.
>>
>>2865786
I went in late September last year, and though there were some very hot days, it was at least bearable due to the lack of humidity. And that's the thing with summer in Japan, it's the humidity that gets you.

Arashiyama's Monkey Park is a pretty unique experience, but it does require a short walk up a mountain.
For modern stuff, Teamlabs just opened there last year. There's also the Nintendo Museum, but I think you still need to get tickets through a lottery system.
Shopping should be ok since it's a major city. Not my thing at all, but I think there's some decent vintage shopping places if that interests you.
Not much of a drinker either and don't really care for the nightlife scene, but I heard it's very limited in Kyoto.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>2866056
If you're experienced, maybe. But having done a few smaller climbs I wouldn't try to conquer Fuji in a day. You'd have to start at sunrise and you'd be done by sunset if you went bullet climbing. Not really fun going that pace and carries risks.
>>
>>2866059
I see. It wouldn't be my first time mountain climbing and I am decently fit. Although you're probably right that it is more fun to start in the afternoon/evening and do a relaxing climb and then hang out with others at the top while watching the sunrise before descending.
It just seems like the overnight lodgings are so expensive.

Was in the Tokyo area for the Tokyo Game Show, so that was around the last weekend of September. Think the average temperature were still around the mid 20's, but it never felt like the Japanese summers I've felt before. Also went to Osaka and Kanazawa soon after and same story there.
>>
>>2866043
>Nintendo Museum and Teamlabs
Good one, I forgot the museum existed and didn't know Teamlabs opened there. Gonna go in May so I'm just in time for Nintendo's ticket lottery.
>Monkey Park
Might go for this if weather permits. Would you say the walk up is tough for older/unfit people? Googling gives me mixed answers.

Are there many BBQ style dishes or places that serve simple grilled meats or even baked meats?

>watch travel vloggers for ideas on planning a stay in Kanazawa
>they all say the same thing: aside from the token mentions of the castle gardens, omicho and the old districts, its always something like "day trip to shirakawago" or "day trip to takayama" or "day trip to kaga-onsen"
Apparently, the single funnest thing you can do while in Kanazawa is to get the fuck out of Kanazawa.

>Whenever I see someone with a stubble or unkempt beard I just assume they're jobless, lazy, or mentally ill, usually it's correct.
Plenty of Jap dudes who aren’t salaryman drones or limp faggots have stubble or beards (as best as they can grow them). Anyway, why care what some mindless foid thinks of you anyway? Not like any of them would fuck you.
>>
>>2866185
>500/30 is 16
Very doable if you're only eating once a day, family restaurants and the like are usually around 1k per meal.
Don't forget to account for transport unless you're walking everywhere, you can easily hit 1-2k/day.
>>
>>2866185
>i dont drink, so you can imagine im not gonna waste much money.
Even if you did it would not make much of a difference. Japan has some of the cheapest alcohol in the world. If you have low tolerance you can get trashed for 1000 yen a day.

Well yeah, depending on where you wanna go it can add up so draw up a rough itinerary for fare estimates if you're concerned about that.
Why not eat lunch instead of breakfast? There's way more options and stuff like ramen and sushi don't usually open until noon anyway.

I'm planning to go to Japan for 16 days excluding the arrival and departure days. However, I feel like I might be trying to see too much and that it is going to feel like I'm rushing through things, especially with having to drag a suitcase around.
My plan is to spend the first 3 days in Tokyo doing touristy stuff but avoiding shopping.
Afterwards going to Kyoto for 3 days plus a day trip to Nara.
Then going to 2 days in Osaka plus a day trip to Hiroshima.
Lastly going north to Sendai for 2 days.
Then returning to Tokyo for the final days and do some shopping + other touristy stuff.
It feels like it might be too much and that I would lose a lot of time traveling. Is the Hiroshima and Sendai parts perhaps too much and not worth bothering with?
>>
>>
>>2866267
Sendai is a weird choice when you have cities like Nagoya, Kanazawa, Nagano in your way.
Overall, luggage shouldn't be that much of an issue when every hotel advertizes pre-check-in and post-check-out luggage storage
>>
>>2866269
It's because I want to see the northern part of the country as well. I actually wanted to go to Sapporo, but from what I read it is pretty rough to get there if you're not flying, so Sendai felt like a decent compromise.
>>
>>
>>
>>2866267
i would clean up your itinerary, you're going to spend a massive amount of time on trains, especially with the day trip stuff, osaka to hiroshima and back alone is going to be 3 hours out of your day just travelling, so probably cut one of those out
i'd maybe go tokyo(3)>nagano or niigata(2-3)>kyoto(4)>tokyo(2), maybe with a day in or around shizuoka/hamamatsu on the way back to tokyo
more time in less places is better, and like the other anon said, the northern parts are worth the investment on their own, i did about two weeks split between hokkaido/akita/yamagata/sendai and it was a great time

It's been years since I've last visited the Monkey Park (pre covid), so my memory of it is a bit fuzzy!
I don't recall the walk to be that steep, but it did take me about 15-20 minutes and it was pretty much a constant climb up ramps and some stairs. Don't think it's a huge issue for unfit people, and there are also places to rest along the way if you really need to, but the stairs might be an issue for the elderly or someone with a disability. There might be alternate paths you can take to ignore the stairs, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

Hope you have no problem with your flights. China is randomly ordering flights to Japan to halt as part of some scare campaign to keep Chinese people from going during some weird diplomatic BS. Lots of people have gotten fucked because their flights got canceled.

Don't go to this spot, it will crush your soul. Heck, just google street view it, and you'll see dozens of people waiting to snap the memepic.
The funny part is if you just go uphill on the left, you'll be in a nice neighborhood without anyone and you can get a nice street pic with the road seemingly diving into the ocean. Also another one on the other side, but with the city view.
God I don't even want to know how much housing is in that area. Nice quiet houses uphill with ocean views. It's godly. If I win the lottery, I could see myself living there.
The entire area is kino, how come nobody talks about walking alongside the little enoshima railway and comfy stroll in the Inamuragasaki and Gokurakuji areas.

Why should people not permanently relocate to Japan? I’m looking at my country and not seeing a lot worth staying for and I’m having a hard time envisioning a great life for my descendants. What am I not considering about Japan that I should?
>>
>>
>>2866378
The biggest downside for me is that they don't allow dual citizenship, and I would never cut ties with my home country that permanently. Imagine having to apply for visa in order to visit friends or family.
Residency is not good enough if you plan to settle permanently, if its spousal residency you can lose it if you get divorced, and the courts will always favor native women for child custody.
And just the principle of it desu, if I'm to live somewhere permanently I want the ability to fully participate in society, including voting or getting involved in local politics.
>>
>>2866382
It seems like giving up voting rights to make sure your grandkids grow up in a safe country with a high standard of living is a small price to pay. People give up their whole lives for that in most other countries.

Shitsux. If only visa allowed to stay at least for a full year or something.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>2866384
If they even let you stay, that's the point I'm trying to make. No way I'm building a future in a country that could rob me of that future at a moments notice. But my nation is not that bad so my calculus is different.

Shill me on the Izu peninsula. I'll probably rent a car and drive alongside the coastline. Should I spend 1 night, two nights, three nights? (likely at different spots, if you have any town recomendation I'm all ears).
Also, since for once I'll have a car instead on relying on trains, surely there's some interesting shit to see inland? Though I think I'll be occupied enough with just the coast.
Maybe a sidetrip to Oshima island also.
>>
>>2866398
Why would they not? I agree that there’s no guarantee if all you have is a visa or permanent resident card, but I don’t see why they’d just kick all law abiding tax paying social harmony abiding visa holders out. Plus, it doesn’t seem that hard to obtain citizenship, which in your lifetime gives you legal protection, and if your kids are half ethnic Japanese they’d have both legal protection and social toleration. Honestly, I’d be more worried about gangs of Japs killing random gaijin at the market like in the Commodore Perry days than I would worry about visas being revoked just cause.

in japan? it's much better to spend at least a year (assuming it's your first martial art+sedentary lifestyle) practicing it in your local area to pick up the basics before traveling the world to do a few sessions

Prices have nearly doubled the last few years. It's still cheap for people paying in dollars or euros. More and more Japanese people don't buy convenience store food or anything anymore because it's too expensive for locals now. Bento used to max out at 499 yen with many great ones at 350, but sometimes there are 900 yen bento now with portions much smaller than they used to be and ingredients of far lower quality than before.

I plan to stay at Atami for 3 nights during my upcoming Japan trip, my idea is to rent a car for one day to explore then spend remaining 2 days just goofing around nearby beach towns and relaxing.
Kawazu Seven Waterfalls is one inland plance I will want to visit by car, then also Shimoda town. Supposedly the western side is more interesting/wild but also has worse roads so I might skip it.

This is what all Japanese expats do when they reach retirement age. They come back to Japan, renounce their foreign citizenship, and then apply for the national public health insurance system. This is what is shamelessly called a life hack by Japanese expats and even Japanese newspapers have reported on this life hack.
After spending 60 years in America, they return to Japan for retirement because "social security is better there." While many critics call it "freeloading on social security" and "completely unfair," is it actually okay under the current system?: https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/0f92c6c597cf7ad477e974f727ada37f6cc2 a3a3
After spending sixty years in the United States at the age of eighteen, an article in the Nikkei newspaper about a couple who returned home. There are a lot of reactions that complain about unfairness in terms of social security: https://togetter.com/li/2658209
I'm going to move back to Japan and live there when I retire: https://www.nyseikatsu.com/ny-news/12/2020/31563/

They just have a hostile baseline and hostile way to relate to the world.
I kind of like the Chinese mindset, ngl.

I've been in Fukuoka for the last 4 months on a student visa. It was really rocky at the start but I'm starting to enjoy it. I was kind of planning on leaving before April which would grant me a tuition refund from my language school (around $2.5k) but really trying to decide if going back to the States is something I wanna do right away or not. I have plenty of savings but being away from a job for almost a year seems really irresponsible and would be hard to explain why I have such a large gap. Another reason is that I met a girl from Laos who is really sweet and it's making the end-tail of my trip really enjoyable. I kind of want to spend more time but it's doomed anyways as I have no long-term plan unless I find a job of my profession (accounting) which seems impossible with my gaijin level of japanese
I'm also very, very nervous of being here during the summer heat. I got a very small taste of it when I came here in October and even that was kind of annoying. Fuark brehs. It's like one side of me wants to GTFO from here because I honestly can't stand the feeling of being a gaijin. I don't want to try to fit in or make people accept me, I'd rather just fuck off. But I'm also enjoying the privileged life of a student who doesn't have any real responsibilities. I also want to take advantage of the healthcare and get some skin issues sorted out.

If you squint hard enough all Japanese politicians are Korean puppets since they're all pro-Korean. In Abe's case he was a popular former PM whose party happens to be supported by a cult and so his schizo assassin decided he was the best target if he wanted attention.

Lol, you are both a special breed. Damned if you do, damned if you don't? And for my situation - as opposed to what? Not quitting my job and waiting until I'm 40+ with savings? Or being 20 something and somehow affording it, e.g. trust fund baby like you claimed I was? Like I mentioned, living here has been an incredible experience so far with tons of ups and downs. I'm now just trying to decide if extending it for 6+ more months is worth it or not
>>
>>
>>2866657
I don't think staying for longer or not will matter since you've already quit your job of 8 years. If you were considering staying indefinitely, that would be a different question. Of course, I'm speaking from a utilitarian standpoint, since I can't imagine quitting a secure job to go to language school. You might think that's the greatest thing ever, I just think it's stupid. If I were in your situation I'd have applied to a Japanese university instead, or just stayed home and gotten married at your age.

My chinese ex opened up about her hatred of Japan and it's pretty fascinating. She has no problem watching Japanese tv shows or going there as a tourist or having Japanese acquaintances, but she also longs for the day when the prc invades and repays the suffering of Nanking tenfold on every Japanese civilian. She also claims that all chinese people think like this, but she was kinda nuts and I'm not sure I believe that part

> Is Toyama worth a 2 day visit?
Where in Toyama and to do what? The prefecture itself is good for outdoor shit, especially hiking. Toyama city is a relaxed enough place, and the food is good, especially seafood, but isn’t particularly interesting. If you go there, there is a canal that you can walk along about 10km to the oceanside, and there is a historical area towards the end that is worth a look around. There is also a brewery run by a Czech guy in a historic building out there, Kobo Brewing, that is really good. If you don’t want to walk, there is also a tram that goes out there.

Japan made this nearly impossible now because chinks kept abusing it and the government can't make racist laws that just exclude chinks and browns from making system cheat business so everyone, including the noble honest white man, has to suffer.
New system basically boxes out all startups and will likely get next to 0 applicants since you need nearly 300k USD, multiple years of professional experience, Japanese language skills and already have multiple Japanese nationals lined up to hire when you start.

Sexless
Surveys by the Japan Family Planning Association (JFPA) have shown that a significant portion of young Japanese women are not interested in or dislike sexual contact, with some studies citing figures near 45–50% for women aged 16–24

The review estimated that around half of Japanese people reach their mid-20s with no sexual experience at all, and approximately 10 per cent reach their 30s before having sex.
Even those who have lost their virginity don't seem to be having much sex. Online surveys from the 2020s indicate that around half of Japanese adults aged 20–49 are sexually inactive, meaning they haven't had sex in the past year.
In comparison, just over one in three Japanese adults aged 20–24 reported being sexually inexperienced in 2002, compared to 51–60 per cent by the 2020s.

heading for Japan in March for one week. I have always wanted to train and fight with ninjas. Real ninjas. What is the best place in Japan for me to do that? I do not expect to pay any money as I will earn my keep there like a real ninja living off the land and tending to my master. Also any tips on bringing weighted clothes on the airplane would be appreciated.

the heat and humidity in the summer along with the rains suck serious ass. Just find places with AC which is everywhere and you can somewhat make it through. Just take it into account if you want to do anything active outdoors. If you are down in Fukuoka you might want to check out some of the places on Kyushu. Nagasaki is a beautiful city with the street cars and riverside/stream running through town. It is serious vibes. I stayed at a guesthouse there a while back run by some lady with an extensive kimono selection. She really takes guests in like part of the family as well hooking me up with nabe and fruit. I also recommend Beppu as a hot spring town as well. There were a couple of really old school springs there where you pay like 100 yen into a bowl and just go down into someone's basement and dip into the hot fire. There are also springs for looking at there that go different colours due to the minerals they bring up called the Hells.

Literally find a road perpendicular to the crowded shit and walk down it, you can have fun in shibuya and even shinjuku if you just leave the ultra crowded area, all the same kinds of shops and restaurants as the main areas. Shit works at dotonburi too, literally walk a block or two perpendicular from the "main street" or down some alleys and you'll have a good time

I've spent around 3 days so far in Tokyo and I like it.
My home base is around Shibuya and there are tons of people around. While some might consider huge crowds a bad things, I kind of find them interesting, since I am coming from a town back in my home country with around 50k people and never more than 100 people in one place.
That being said, if I were to live in Tokyo, I'd chose outer parts of the city. I walked through some residential neighborhoods near Gōtokuji Temple and I loved it a lot. Very peaceful.

Shinjuku Station is labyrinthian. I consider myself to have good spacial awareness and did not once get lost in Japan but holy Christ did I ever come close to it in that train station. I think the trick is to just look up where you need to be on maps and find the closest exit for it then just find a sign with your exit written on it and follow it.

why the fuck is there so much of this and its not just sleeping, i mean this dramatic sway bumping their head onto ur shoulder as if the train isnt smooth as fuck and the girls with their eyes closed arent always still... not to mention the second its their stop: "oops im up and not drunk or groggy."

The biggest reason right now is 'hay fever' (kafunsho). Japan has a lot of cedar and cypress trees, and from February to April, they release massive amounts of pollen. About half of the population suffers from it, so wearing a mask is a very common and effective way to reduce those symptoms.
Also, masks have been a part of Japanese culture for a long time, even before COVID-19, for things like flu season or hay fever. So for many, it's just a habit that provides a sense of comfort and security . Some people, especially younger women, also wear them because it makes them feel more comfortable without makeup.

Try to have lunch after 1 PM. From noon to 1 PM, every restaurant is extremely busy. Once things slow down a bit, the staff will be kind and attentive.
They know you're a tourist and might be unsure how to order, so there's no need to pretend you know everything.

Hi guys, traveling to tokyo soon and planning to stay 1 night around Fujiyoshida.
I want to hit these spots:
> lake yamanaka
> chureito pagoda
> oshino hakkai
> lawson fujikawaguchiko town hall
> oishi park
> lake kawaguchi area
My plan is to bus to Fujiyoshida area and base there for 1 night.
Question is, is this realistically doable without renting a car, relying only on buses and train? Looking at the maps the spots seem pretty far apart and walking doesn’t look practical.
Or should I just book a bus tour from Klook? Its just me and my girlfriend though.

Anon, Japan's an introvert's paradise.
You can self check-in and check out at hotels. You can use a self-register at convenience stores or supermarkets. All train and metro stations have english options nowadays, same thing with buying tickets into tourist attractions. You can choose to pay by cash, ic card, foreign credit card, or QR code.
Case in point, I just had an all-you-can-eat hotpot course today and I didn't need to interact with anyone but the cashier. You use the touch screen at the entrance to get a ticket to your table. You then use the touch screen at your table to order your food. The food's delivered to your table by a jingling roomba. All of the touch screen has english option
