The only way I'll be able to retire before I'm old is if I save up and move to another country. I was thinking of either mexico, Costa Rica, or panama. What do I need to look into about doing something like this? What are things I need to consider that most don't when planning this sort of thing? Is it one of those things that sounds better than it actually is? I just don't wanna be a wagie until I'm 65.

There isn't really a magic bullet here: just save more money. If you are willing to live like a monk; SEA is doable with 250k - 500k invested dividends but that's still tight.

If you are in the US it might be more practical to just retire in place. Become a hyper minimalist so your lifestyle isn't as attached to being a wageslave. Easier said then done I know.

Big issue that gets overlooked a lot is long term health care. Dealing with a chronic illness in a foreign country is a pain in the ass. It's a common reason why some boomer expats return to the US despite our health care system being so fucking expensive.

I've heard good things about private Mexican healthcare. Either way flying from mexico to mainland US is a lot more feasible. I just know that the math adds up, I can retire earlier in a developing country. I know that its a lot easier said than done though. Insulin is a lot cheaper in mexico too. But idk I just don't want to be a wagie until I'm in my 60s, I so desperately want to be free from employment even if I have to lower my living standards

How about get rid of all your junk first if you really want to live this kind of life? If you're not willing to part with your precious possessions, then you'd be better off gibsmaxxing in a shitty old singlewide. With EBT and an Obamaphone and free county shuttle rides and government healthcare and a trailer you own on land you already paid for, you can live with very little spending money.

Like many wannabe expats, you seem to believe that moving to a foreign country is as simple as stepping off the plane with your passport in hand. It's not. You are a temporary visitor and an alien. Your presence in a foreign country is a privilege which can be revoked at any time. It's not your home and it will never be your home. Are you okay with being fundamentally homeless? If so, then you're good to go.

Go ahead, try a year without working. Quit your job, sell your shit, and bum around for cheap in some foreign country as a tourist. Keep a daily diary, then look back after a year - if you last that long - and make your decision. There's no need to go speculatively harrumphing about MUH PERMANENT RETIREMENT or MUH LONG TERM FUTURE when you can "retire" temporarily with $18,000 saved up. ($1500 per month is what you should have available for your budget-tier foray into "retirement", even if you do end up spending half that amount.)

My goal is to have about 800k ish saved in principal and live off interest from stock market trades. I'm about 1/3 the way there. I'm not trying to retire and be broke and homeless. I just don't wanna have to live off retirement with the US cost of living if I can do it way earlier in a cheaper country.
