I found it interesting how in the last film it goes into dementia, and then it turns out that Reggie's actor is suffering from it (which was revealed *after* the film).
Overall I love all four movies, it's something that if you get you get basically, it is such a personal project that will only really resonate with people similar in spirit.

OH NO, WE have to embalm and then bury the dead bodies in coffins inside burial vaults to preserve them in the ground and separate them as much as possible from natural return to the earth.
Why? B-BECAUSE!
God forbid a man with vision comes along and uses dead bodies to create a cheap and self sustaining work force.
That's the reason they call him the Tall Man because the rest of you pussies are so SHORT sighted.

I'm going through the series now and it's refreshing to see a middle aged man with a skullet play the action hero/ladies man role.

Yeah. I thought the second movie had it's moments. Reminded me of Evil Dead. Didn't care for the third. Things were getting even sillier with Home Alone kid's razor frisbee and nunchuck lady and it kind of sad seeing Mike and Jody getting older.

His motives are very clear. He uses the lady to kill people, if he doesn't do it himself. Then he turns their bodies into minions. He's making workers. The main problem is he has a recurring roster of people who keep fucking with his operation

>he tall man has no clear motive
Yes he does, it's total control of death.
He was obsessed with death, created a machine that let him travel inter-dimensionally.
Spent a millennia learning to put his consciousness out of his physical body and came back.
The time spent away from our dimension was the literal few seconds during the movie where he teleports and comes back.
He now believes in total supremacy of all living things, which he finds beneath him now since has transferred to a higher state.
If you're looking for a direct quote go fuck yourself, but if you actually watched the movie it's all there by what we see and his actions.

incredible pair of movies. really some unique stuff going on. Phantasm 2 is one of the best horror sequels ever made probly. one of the best action-horrors. one of the local broadcast affiliates had it among their roster of horror to play on the weekend especially in October, along with Fright Night, and more. edited and censored of course. sometimes alternate TV scenes, almost always alternate dialogue. yep... you just cannot go wrong with Phantasm 1 and 2.

For some mysterious reason 'The Tall Man' controls a bunch of violent minions that he, or some evil force, creates from dead human bodies. Most are insane zombie midgets, sometimes they're humans with a sphere inside their skull. All this appears to be going on either on an alien planet or in some alternate dimension for some nefarious purpose. I kinda lost track of the story durring the third one. The plot simply fell apart.

No, just because of how it emphasizes the “mad” part of “mad scientist.” It’s not that he hadn’t considered the other potential uses of his tech, just that he doesn’t give a fuck about them. Dinosaurs!

This. Seemed pretty obvious. Wasn't the other world higher gravity? if so, it would make sense to compress people to make them more suited to it.
It's really a shame the creator chose to go more the generic zombie route instead of elaborating on the extra-dimensional aspect.

the one action figure that was ever made of this guy had a subpar likeness, unfortunately. an overall underwhelming effect. we need a new Tall Man figure

Phantasm creator Don Coscarelli recently wrote a short story collection. Its pretty good and works if you've seen all the films as it fleshes out characters and backgrounds from each entry.

2 - Higher budget elaboration
3 - A lot of interesting lore at the beginning and end with embarrassing shit sandwiched between.
4 - Underrated mix of dream-like weirdness and deleted scenes from the first movie
5 - Attempt at saving a series of web shorts by re-editing them into a film.
