I couldn’t make any sense of these movies but loved them anyway.
>>
>>218295058
as far as I can tell only the first 2 are actually movies and everything made afterwards was just the director filming shit with no script and zero money

I don’t remember everything from he director commentary but I think he said the movie was supposed to be dreamlike
>>
>>218295391
It was filmed and edited to feel like a dream and help a kid cope with his older brother's death by having them team up and defeat the mortician.
>>
>>218295461
I found it interesting how in the last film it goes into dementia, and then it turns out that Reggie's actor is suffering from it (which was revealed *after* the film).

Overall I love all four movies, it's something that if you get you get basically, it is such a personal project that will only really resonate with people similar in spirit.

>>218295058
He's an ayyy. He needs workers back home. Its that simple
>>
>>218295058
OH NO, WE have to embalm and then bury the dead bodies in coffins inside burial vaults to preserve them in the ground and separate them as much as possible from natural return to the earth.
Why? B-BECAUSE!

God forbid a man with vision comes along and uses dead bodies to create a cheap and self sustaining work force.
That's the reason they call him the Tall Man because the rest of you pussies are so SHORT sighted.

>>
>>218295545
He doesn't do shit with them. They just bring him more corpses so he can make more zombie midgets. The Tall Man has no clear motive whatsoever.
>>
The first movie really grew on me after a rewatch. The music and neighborhood are oddly comfy. And I like when kids in horror movies are resourceful instead of annoying.
>>
>>218295693
I'm going through the series now and it's refreshing to see a middle aged man with a skullet play the action hero/ladies man role.
>>
>>218295725
Yeah. I thought the second movie had it's moments. Reminded me of Evil Dead. Didn't care for the third. Things were getting even sillier with Home Alone kid's razor frisbee and nunchuck lady and it kind of sad seeing Mike and Jody getting older.
>>
>>218295602
His motives are very clear. He uses the lady to kill people, if he doesn't do it himself. Then he turns their bodies into minions. He's making workers. The main problem is he has a recurring roster of people who keep fucking with his operation
>>
>>218295822
>and I would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for those meddling kids!
>>
>>218295391
Entire series is basically the writer/director trying to make sense of a fucked up nightmare he once had
>>
>he tall man has no clear motive
Yes he does, it's total control of death.
He was obsessed with death, created a machine that let him travel inter-dimensionally.
Spent a millennia learning to put his consciousness out of his physical body and came back.
The time spent away from our dimension was the literal few seconds during the movie where he teleports and comes back.
He now believes in total supremacy of all living things, which he finds beneath him now since has transferred to a higher state.

If you're looking for a direct quote go fuck yourself, but if you actually watched the movie it's all there by what we see and his actions.
>>
>>218295822
>He uses the lady to kill
It's an illusion. He made out with Jody and Tommy. Fucked Tommy too.
>>
>>218295313
the only movie they had money for is the second and it's the worst one
>>
>>218295725
I love reggie. I like the scene where he's talking about the ice cream biz with jody and then they play guitar and he goes "We're hot as love, you know it."
>>
>>218295975
In English, doc.
>>
>>218295391
This is really apparent in the first movie and it's wonderful. The later movies switch more to it just being badass fun and that's alright, too. IV sucks though.

Huh, interesting. I always thought the implication was that after Jebediah entered the portal his body was taken over by something more powerful on the other side.

Jody literally tells Mike Jebadiah Morningside never comes back.

I can't say I really get the appeal of the sequels, but I love the original
>>

Reggie’s the fucking man.
>>
>>218295058
He also takes their brains out, shrinks them down and puts them inside the sentinel balls and sometimes turns into a girl and fucks dudes. Don't think about it too hard.

What even is he? Some sort of inter-dimensional (formerly human) techno-sorcerer?
>>
>>218295058
I love the fact that the Tall Man is played by Angus Scrimm, a man with a name so awesome you’d assume he was already a fictional villain.

incredible pair of movies. really some unique stuff going on. Phantasm 2 is one of the best horror sequels ever made probly. one of the best action-horrors. one of the local broadcast affiliates had it among their roster of horror to play on the weekend especially in October, along with Fright Night, and more. edited and censored of course. sometimes alternate TV scenes, almost always alternate dialogue. yep... you just cannot go wrong with Phantasm 1 and 2.

Why? Because of how accurate it is? Scientists are more niche and pathetic and into their own specific kinks than most people are willing to realize.
>>
>>218295058
The nonsensical nature of it is what makes it great; the whole thing feels like a dream whi cc h is great for horror.

For some mysterious reason 'The Tall Man' controls a bunch of violent minions that he, or some evil force, creates from dead human bodies. Most are insane zombie midgets, sometimes they're humans with a sphere inside their skull. All this appears to be going on either on an alien planet or in some alternate dimension for some nefarious purpose. I kinda lost track of the story durring the third one. The plot simply fell apart.

No, just because of how it emphasizes the “mad” part of “mad scientist.” It’s not that he hadn’t considered the other potential uses of his tech, just that he doesn’t give a fuck about them. Dinosaurs!

He's making workers. The brains are turned into spheres, the bodies into soul-less midgets.

That's because they were based on a nightmare of the author/director. Nightmares don't make sense.

Sex in vehicular form.
>>
>>218302132
Great suggestions. I’d add “The Gate” to this. It’s got that dream-like quality, too, at least to me.
>>
>>218302132
Adding:
Spirits Of The Dead
The Company Of Wolves
Carnival Of Souls
Dementia
Most of Jean Rollin's stuff
>>
>>218295266
This. Seemed pretty obvious. Wasn't the other world higher gravity? if so, it would make sense to compress people to make them more suited to it.

It's really a shame the creator chose to go more the generic zombie route instead of elaborating on the extra-dimensional aspect.
>>
>>218295058
the one action figure that was ever made of this guy had a subpar likeness, unfortunately. an overall underwhelming effect. we need a new Tall Man figure

Phantasm creator Don Coscarelli recently wrote a short story collection. Its pretty good and works if you've seen all the films as it fleshes out characters and backgrounds from each entry.
>>
>>218303375
I've read this. All the stories are fantastic. The last story was the only weak one, probably because its connected to Ravager
>>
I've only seen the first Phantasm, I liked it, but is the rest of the series worth watching?
>>
>>218303720
None are as good as the first but 2 & 3 are solid sequels. 4 & 5 are not great but do wrap things up.
>>
>>218303754
I'll watch them then. Not like I have anything to lose
>>
>>218303720
2 - Higher budget elaboration
3 - A lot of interesting lore at the beginning and end with embarrassing shit sandwiched between.
4 - Underrated mix of dream-like weirdness and deleted scenes from the first movie
5 - Attempt at saving a series of web shorts by re-editing them into a film.
