The moment and method to create new split severance innies. And to test if the current innie person is stable enough to replace the outie.

Season 2 was so fucking bad.

Everything became about goddamn love triangles and Gemma. What happened to the workers actually fucking doing work? They only needed Mark anyways, what were the other three on the severed floor even there for?

they weren't necessary, mark just threw a fit demanding them back, so they brought them back. but yeah I agree season 2 is fucking garbage

The show got bad because the writer and Ben Stiller got smoke blown up their ass by dumb freaks who watched the show because they thought it makes them smart.
They didn't get the show and think it's some deep mystery and it's the new LOST. So the show went more grand and became pretentious.
The first season was so good because it was funny and interactions were cool, it was a simple show where you are a different person when you go to work so the innies have to figure out how to get out. There was nothing deep about it. We know what's going on. Everything that was weird could be dismissed as making fun of corporate culture. Why does the work they do make no sense? For the same reason real office work makes no sense. Why do they worship this Eagan guy? Corporate culture is very cult-like and the founders are turned into mythical figures. Why can't they leave? Bad for business, the outties don't want to work and don't want to acknowledge their innies as people.

Then season 2 happens and the work they do is actually important and they are possibly working on something that could end the world or give control to the company and fuck everyone. Now it's a literal cult that sacrifices lambs.
It would have been a far better show if it turned out that the work they do is completely worthless, just a waste of time because their real work is to test the implants and be test subjects for the severance technology. They would be stuck there because the board doesn't want to look bad and have bad data showing people leaving or having accidents.
They quickly got all their interesting story points out of the way so they can turn this into an action series about saving the world. They could have had an entire season with Hellen being a mole and had people theorize about whether it's the real Helly, they could have had Gemma have any personality or scenes so people would care about her.
The way season 2 ended I don't have anything to look forward to.
