How do you feel about the A24 Backrooms movie finally releasing this year in May?

I remember seeing The Shining in theaters, how it really felt like a new form of horror had arrived, and this feels the same way. Backrooms is very Kubrickian.

yes exactly
here's the teaser for anyone interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjRndcTYqJo
for some reason it's much more CGI'y than any of his other work, but I think that's intentional

Floprooms
Unadaptable premise. The eerie uncomfortable horror is very hard to catch on film. Probably skinmarink style cinematography will do justice to a source material, but made it flop even more than standard A24 style "horror" (which is flop on its own).
My suggestion, grab skinmarink director, give him a sandwich and a camera. Shot this shit in 2 weeks and sell to streaming services that way you can at least get ~300% investment back.
If you get a normal director + semi good actors + sell it to a cinemas + marketing budget, it's going to be ~even or a flop.
Other plan is picrel style strategy or follow the steps of Ironlung

I'd like to ask the guy that came up with the original backrooms post what he thinks about this. Does he feel like he's been robbed? It's not even like SCP where the IP built on top of an idea and changed over time. Basically the whole backrooms concept hasn't changed much from that one post.

The movie will prob suck but I’m a huge fan of new creators getting a chance at making movies. Hollywood has been dead for a decade and we need new blood, even if it’s some 20yo youtube kid or markiplayer
>>
>>218304663
Will probably make money because if the last few years have proven anything it’s that it’s painfully easy to market to Gen Z memberberries (FNAF, Sonic, Iron Lung). It’s just a matter of owning the IP they liked

I'm 36 and never give a single shit about this zoomer meme so I have mixed feelings of "wow, A24 must really be scraping the barrel for something new." To "this is skibbidi toilet (never seen the video) levels of internet stupidity."
It just seems really fucking desperate. Like garbage Blumhaus would make.

I will answer this clearly so you understand
Vaporwave and the backrooms are intertwined, ever since 2014 (2010 technically but who the fuck cares) there's been an aesthetic growing out of how meaningless late night-shows is, how meaning less day-to-day rituals are. It's not just movies, it's a vibe transcending any medium.
But no one has captured it mainstream yet, no one. It would be a disgrace to just leave it as a foot note in history.
It needs to be captured, it's inevitable.

That’s the hazard of posting an idea anonymously. Not that he’d have gotten anything regardless. He pitched a rough concept and other people built stories around it. He couldn’t even claim the aesthetic in the photo

Kane is the goat. The linup with a24 is a match in heaven. This WILL be kino. I havent been this excited for a movie since following the production of Prometheus.
>>
>>
I am a fan of Kanes.
Surprised he got a movie deal.
This is another YouTuber movie so the bar is pretty low.
I think it’ll be better than Iron Lung as this movie looks to be just created in Blunder which is like all that Kane does.
So it’s an animated horror film.
iirc they only have one actual set but who knows.
Does anyone know what the budget is?

Its a real movie. The teaser was made in blender, the final shot of the backrooms in the teaser is a real practical set. The movie has a real cinematographer and 90% of it is practical according to kane.

I'll give it a shot because i liked the first backroom short he made and the one inside a mall. I didn't like all the bullshit that was aded after, levels, rules, all stuff that feels from a videogame. The more you explain a mystery the less interesting it becomes

I'll never really understand the backrooms or the horror similar to it. Those sorts of areas give me a sense of comfort, they remind me of being a kid on vacation at hotels, wandering hallways and swimming in empty indoor pools while making up imaginary stories in my head. I realize part of the fear stems from it being a labyrinth of sorts, but I still don't get it. Maybe it's the visual medium -- House of Leaves had a similar concept, and it unsettled the fuck out of me, so I'm not sure. Or maybe it's just fucking retarded.
Either way, won't be watching.
>>
>>218304663
I'm looking forward to it, I don't expect it to be that great but I like the backrooms. The backrooms is just a fun idea and has so much potential, so many directions to take it in. I'm worried it will just be a typical lame interpersonal drama-horror movie, but it happens to take place in the backrooms.
Hopefully it's focused on the analogue conceptual horror and lore of the backrooms, not on screaming actors running from a monster that happens to be in the backrooms.
If it's a scooby-doo monster chase it misses the point of the backrooms. But based on the kane pixels youtube videos he should be able to make a good enough movie with the right vibe. I'm not opposed to their being a monster in the movie, but it has to be done right.
>>
>>
>>218307987
The backrooms do seem very cozy. But people who don't understand the horror of it conceptually are low IQ.
The horror of it is the surreal nature of such an impossible and inexplicable location and the hopelessness of wandering endlessly, totally lost and knowing you can't escape. The surreal nature of the setting evokes a subtle feeling of existential dread. There's also the loneliness, such a vast labyrinth with not a single person to find. Naturally, as you wander endlessly for hours on hours your mind would begin to play tricks on you, you would see things from the corner of your eye. A shadow here, something that you thought moved. Maybe you would think you heard a noise. You're in a distressed and desperate state, your eyes darting back and forth continuously looking for some kind of exit or way out. You might start to become paranoid after enough "moving shadows" in the corner of your eye. You might start to think maybe there actually IS something there, following you. And what would possibly live in a place like this?
This is what most youtube creators get wrong about the backrooms. They think the horror is a scooby-doo monster chase that occurs in a large office setting. But the horror is a more subtle, more realistic and grounded psychological exploration of the paranoia that builds as you face the hopelessness of being lost in a surreal labyrinth. It is not an "intense" super scary jump-scare horror. It is the relatable distress of being lost. It plays upon the instinctual fear of the simple danger of being away from your tribe, your threat detection becoming fatigued after hours of your eyes darting back and forth searching for dangerous animals. The forest can seem endless when you're lost in it. Humans have an instinctual fear of being lost, because it is genuinely dangerous. But it is not an intense jump scare kind of fear, it is a slow burn building anxiety and concern with increasing paranoia and desperation seeping in over time.

I mean the teaser did a pretty good job explaining the concept better than any of the videos kane has done in a very brief way on why the rooms start out normal but get weirder or distorted. It is a good "entry point" for why any normie would give a fuck about watching this movie.

but yes, I believe House of Leaves and:

to be the orgins of all of this
This story (seriously you should read it if you have the time) would also be great, but hard to adapt into a movie: https://qntm.org/scp

That's the sort of thing that would work for the Backrooms though. It's totally about the feeling of an unending but eerily familiar liminal space. Something happening breaks the "horror" of nothingness.

You can watch the whole "series" by kane on his youtube it is... interesting? I like the idea of it more than the execution but I came to it a bit after the whole thing got memed years ago.
Movie has a 5-10% chance of being really interesting.
What I found cool about the kane videos is all of them are rendered. None of it was live video at all at first. Later he started mixing media but the stuff at first glance looks real if you're not paying attention to textures and whatnot.

Thanks for the recommendation. I also pretty much only enjoyed the Navidson record, I'm sure some college students could make it with a camcorder and some free time Blair Witch Project style in a dorm building.

I agree with >>218309876 that it didn't really need a "le spooky monster"

>>218304663
I hope it doesn't miss the point of the backrooms like 90% of backroom-themed horror does now. There is a wealth of potential with the psychological aspect of it, but gen Z seemed to feel the need to take the backrooms and completely paint over it so that the original concept has been almost completely forgotten.

normalfags have no idea what makes backrooms backrooms, they will fail this, it will not have the feel of backrooms and more like another movie. Normalgroids ruin everything they touch, tone deaf populace that unfortunately keeps breeding

It's not a very original idea.
It's like saying you have an idea of a "chosen one" main character.
Okay and?
Doing the actual work, writing the actual pages, making the animation, etc
is the actual work.
Not the idea.

They're at least better than greentexts, which are always written with this cringe mid-2000's college frat boy dude bro attitude which completely kills any tension. They should be written more like Wikipedia articles, not some shitty stoner comedy. This is one of the better pastas I've ever read if you can call it that.

I guess they have to since I doubt most people are watching their movies. I feel like they just output more films than people watch. I saw the Smashing Machine about a month ago. Really good. Same with If I had Legs I'd Kick You but it felt like the director watches the befinning of Beau is Afraid and wanted to make their own take.
