Man, I still haven't gotten around to watching this, and I was a big fan of the comic strip as a kid. Even watched that weird cartoon that had the Phantom teaming up with Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers or whoever it was.

it was flash, mandrake the magician, and his black "assistant". plus their kids. it was fucking classic.

This. First one is hollywoodization garbage.
>>
>>218306123
It's great. It's basically an Indiana Jones film, written by the writer of Indiana Jones.

The Phantom, The Shadow, The Rocketeer

Top3 comic adaptations, anything else is below those gems.

i dont know why the rocketeer is bad, it certainly must be but every piece individually is kino. perfect casting too. somehow assembling them into a whole film is not good. maybe a fan edit could fix everything?

>bad
retard alert

i think the problem might be how it halfassed the golden age aesthetic, they leaned into it a bit but they didnt go all the way with the film.

>I was a big fan of the comic strip
could you give me a general rundown of what The Phantom does? why the purple, isnt he in africa?
>>218306162
oh shit nigga, is that Zatarra?
>>
>>218307379
>could you give me a general rundown of what The Phantom does?
Shoots people with his pistol (it's not a gimmick pistol, it just fires regular bullets).

Also when he punches you, his big skull ring leaves a permanent indent so everyone knows you got punched by him

And if that doesn't work, he has a trained wolf that he'll sic on you.
>why the purple, isnt he in africa?
He wears the same costume regardless of the continent.
>>
>>218307476
are you telling me that he's just a dude who shoots people and punches them? the strip had been going for like 50 years!
and i know thats hypocritical coming from a batman fan
>>
>>218307522
technically "the phantom" is like mythological boogieman crime fighter going back millenia through their family? he is a ghost who walks
>>
>>218305904

My boy Billy Zane would have been a big star if this had come out like 10 years later. The crazy thing is this IP is literally a goldmine. Could have made a pirate movie, a noir movie and a cyberpunk movie all part of a single trilogy with this concept (they kind of did) and yet it´s on some shelve gathering dust because only manly men can appreciate the phantom and we live in the age of female and twink leadership...

The coolest thing about The Phantom is that it's generational. The ring and the title is passed from father to son for generations, but everyone thinks it's the same person who lives forever so he's called The ghost who walks. It spans from ye olde times to the distant future.
>>
>>218307638
idk about that, capeshit started going in full force after the 80s writers strike. dick tracy and the shadow and the phantom were positioned perfectly to carry that forwards but they were way too obscure? by that time. needed a gradual build up into pulp hero cinematic universe.

>>218305904
Is this the film with a microscope that has blades pop out of the eyepiece when you adjust the knob? Because if so that's all I remember about it.

Why does it have two!? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkBmLiDPbxQ

Love this cartoon, the game was cool too. Also you are correct, every time a Phantom dies or retire from old age a family member takes the role, iirc sometimes it was a woman or a brother since having heirs of the correct age all the time is not always possible, specially if the current Phantom dies young. In Phantom 2040 there was a huge gap between the new and the last Phantom.

They kind stole this in that Zorro adaptation with Banderas and Hopkins, and honestly that's damn fine by me, that movie is pretty good.

>>218307072
Technically The Shadow doesn't count. It was originally a radio play which was adapted into novels, comics, movies.
>>
>>218305904
Daily Reminder Black Panther is a race swap of this movie.

The Shadow history is such a mess, the lore varies in each media and it took a long time for the people responsible to come with his whole story, which endup being convoluted anyway. Most people don't even know he's not Lamont Cranston, but actually a guy called Kent Allard and that he's just "borrowing" Cranston's identity, or that he doesn't fight crime because of some idealistic vision but instead because a bunch of monks brainwashed him.

Still, cool af character and kino movie.

The First Avenger came closest. Joe Johnston also directed Rocketeer. Wonder Woman tried to copy that to some succeed but everyone agrees that gadot was wrong fucking choice.
>>
>>218308345
it was basically made up as they went along, continuity isn't important to pulp. the baldwin flick would have been great but i can't help but remember that cgi knife thing and pulls me right back out of it.
>>
>>218306233
I really like that Avengers movie. Also I saw a little of the original show and I have to say, Diana Rigg was criminaly cute, damn.
>>
>>218308347
that wonder woman is nothing like that
the wonder woman show was

I'm watching it on my phone right now
The plot actually isn't that bad but extremely boring, and everything about Captain America is wrong, and Reb Brown is the worst actor ever, but I've seen worse capeshit
>>
>>218306162
>>218306219
eh, it was more or less a standard fare 80s toy commercial cartoon. the cyberpunk Phantom show Phantom 2040 was way more appealing, it even had its character designs made by the same guy who did Aeon Flux
>>218307379
>oh shit nigga, is that Zatarra?
nigga it's Mandrake the Magician, did you never read The Phantom magazine?
>>
>>218308850
There's also the 90s Cap flick.
>>
>>218307057
we didn't have this in Finland but you could order The Phantom merchandise through the fanclub. I had a pair of green Phantom pajamas
>>
>>218308850
for decades this thing made me believe Captain America was a motorbike superhero and when he rode bikes in the MCU movies I was always like "there it is, the iconic Captain America bike!"

to be fair, he does ride bikes more than the average superhero I guess
