The book sucks. The movies suck. However, the second book in the series is great.

Actually the best book of all time. Literally mogs any/all other books. Such a shame you are illiterate. How tiny and dark your world must be.

I got the first three books as gifts for christmas. I powered through the first 200 pages of the first book before putting it down and picking up something more interesting. Should I keep going? After the third time someone almost gets poisoned/killed and there's a roomful of people talking in code that the characters have to decipher and deflect with super secret special spy talk, I was done.

There are a couple of options. Skip to part 2 or 3 in the book and read summaries of what you skipped. Skip to the second book in the series. Or drop the whole thing altogether. The first Dune book is easily the most overrated piece of media in all scifi. I do think the series as a whole is interesting enough to warrant a read, especially starting with book 2.

Dune is one of those books where you will either love it or absolutely hate it. Herbert's writing is fucking atrocious, but the setting and intrigue are second to none. There's a reason it's the most influential sci-fi work of all time.

DUNC > Frank Herbert's Dune (2001) > Lynch Dune. Don't even (You) me, you're a bunch of no taste niggers.

The miniseries is the best adaptation.

>dunc
>puts the actor that looks exactly like the description of duncan to play leto
>put that retard momoa to play duncan
Now if there is a god emperor movie it's guaranteed to be shit because duncan is a main character and they would probably pick some ugly mongrel to play siona anyways

The setting and the questions it raises about natural resources, ecology and the planet, the rights and freedom of native peoples, even the politics and technology and how everything is tied to trade and organized religion, I really like all of that stuff. I just seems a bit uneven: sometimes I'll read a chapter where the descriptions are beautiful and well-put, the characters get developed and the plot moves along; but other times Herbert seems to want to belabor a point or needlessly draw out something because it's significant to the moment and because it carries weight and implications for the character and story involved. And that's okay, I've read long discursive, meditative stuff from Proust, Musil, Döblin, Broch where the writing of the thing is reason enough for it to be there. I put Dune down because when a book gets to the point where I'm reading it just to get through it, when I'm just moving my eyes across the page blankly, it is no longer engaging and a complete waste of time to keep going.

i read the first 5-6 books i think it was, and holy fuck were they awful. i kept waiting for this scene to be in one of the books and it never came, all i got was
>muh orange catholic bible
>muh sand niggers are so mystical and cool
>muh old ladies and children can wipe out armies of the greatest most advanced army that can be assembled by vastly more advanced empires
>muh women having opinions
i fucking hate reading and reading Dune made me remember why i don't fucking read books.

The ONLY good things about the books was the main character's interactions with his father, along with anything to do with the Harkonens. Everything else fucking gay as fucking SHIT.

Furthermore i refuse to watch any fucking movies released after 2010. i never in my life want to see a Zoomer flopping around on screen.

adaptations are for people who cant read
