The Ninth Gate almost felt like Roman Polanski was trolling the audience. It's the most basic neo-noir slop with every single possible fucking joke of an archetype that you can think of. Femme fatale that is also like a bodyguard, but on top of that, you've got a heavy played by a black guy with blonde hair that looks like Dennis Rodman. Everyone he comes across who gives him info either winds up dead or MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEARED. Nothing makes any sense, Corso isn't particularly insightful or clever, and winds up being luckier than James Bond a lot of the time, and the payoff? THERE IS NO PAYOFF!

He walks through the Ninth Gate and you don't see the outcome. The movie ends and you feel like you just wasted your time.
