Not only is she dead, I think Konoha killed her. Konoha's thought process is that once the hit is out for someone, they're gonna get killed either by her or some other assassin. So it'd better be her because she can rise through the rankings and make money. I don't believe she'd sacrifice her ranking position just to be able to say she wasn't the one who hurt her friend this time. If she saved Aoi by taking the job, botching it on purpose and letting her run away, then at least there would be some value to that. But it's very out of character for Konoha to do all that. Remember she reprimanded Satoko when it looked like she was willing to die to save her leader's lover. Even if Konoha feels bad, she does the job. I know but I don't buy it. I think that's the show giving new people false hope to cling to. Konoha's a really cold butcher. There may be a number of reasons her rating went down but hesitating to kill is just too ooc. And I don't think Yoshida has the power to change Konoha's behavior for now. She may have left a seed that will one day get Konoha to pick something new in the future but for now she'll stick to what she was raised and trained to do. That's all there is to it.

My headcanon is that Konoha accepted the hit on Aoi, then grabbed her off the street and bundled her into a van to be relocated somewhere else like Walter White did in Breaking Bad, and all of Aoi's belongings that she left in the street to give her family hope that she just ran off or whatever is what caused Konoha's ranking to go down since it wasn't a clean hit. The alternative, that she declined the job and just let someone else kill her so she would have a clean conscience, is too hard to swallow. The happy, bouncy ED right after that downer of an episode gave me whiplash. Also, I still can't wrap my brain around the fact that the same seiyuu that did Sonoko from YuYuYu also voices Konoha, I keep expecting something insane like KAGAWA LIFE to come out of her mouth.
