1 is a great game.
2 is better in pretty much every way. It's honestly one of my all-time favorite video games.
I'd recommend starting with 1, firstly because that's the one that the creators wanted players to start with. And also because if you play 2 first and you'll like it, you'll want to play more, but since 1 isn't as good as 2, you'll probably be somewhat let down.
But technically, you can understand 2's story completely fine without playing 1 first.

I had fun with it for most of the game until about my second final chapter, at which point I was so much more powerful than all the other final chapters the combat stopped being interesting. I didn't end up finishing the last final chapter (Throne's, my main character) because it was going to be just too anticlimactic for me to care about it if I went at it at full power, and I couldn't think of a challenge I could actually beat to make it fair. (I tried soloing for a bit but the boss has an ability to just get a guaranteed one-hit that I couldn't see a way past - build up sidesteps, sure, but then you just die to attrition or multihits.)

OT2 is the only JRPG I cleared all the achievements for, even the autistic superboss. It's just such a great game but you're right, I can't see myself replaying it and spending another 40+ hours or whatever it would take.

guy that played it not knowing it was a mobile game before being ported
it feels like a game that was made before octopath 1 in terms of polish
the chapter progression is the one thing that made me realize it was a mobile game, cause it was very obviously an as-it-goes gacha game's story (the production quality skyrocketed as the writing quality cratered, imo), and I would be extremely surprised if the writers and music team were the same on either 1 or 2

I just finished the first game. (I did not participate on the horrifying end game super boss conditions) and I was so disappointed narratively. I liked the combat, but the characters seemed generic and boring, and their each stories ended unsatisfyingly to me. Are Octopath 2 and the other games similar to the first narratively?
I LOVED THE COMBAT though.

I had the same complaints about OT1's story. I hated how disconnected all 8 of the characters and stories felt from one another. However, I just finished OT2 a few days ago and I can assure you that they did a much better job of tying all of the stories together in OT2.

Not at all. I've noticed a trend that any time a series moves to mobile the stories trend darker and I don't know why. Octopath 0 took the fucking cake though, I don't think there was a single story that didn't have some kind of implied rape in it outside of, unsurprisingly, the wholly original town story.

am i missing something to satisfy my 100% completionist status? I did the same in OT1 and 2, though the grind in 1 for lvl 99 was utter cancer and I thank God every day I bought 0 on steam and not on switch so i could download a cait mod.
>>734107325
OT2 is better than OT1 in every single way possible. It looks better, plays better, has arguably better characters(though thats subjective, although the side characters are definitely better in 2), has way more content, etc. Similar to Breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom, the predecessor feels like a tech demo now with the sequel released. I highly recommend playing it, the final boss was one of the most kino things i have ever experienced.
But if you want the characters to interact more, youre still going to be kinda disappointed. They "interact" in battles by talking to each other when buffing, being damaged, etc, and theres also 4 crossed chapters of 2 characters each where 2 characters interact with each other(one after chapter 2, one after chapter 4). They only ever truly interact with each other in the final chapter of the game. But still, id still recommend playing it, its at least a 9/10.

What, you're just gonna behead her after she helped you kill God?
As long as (You) and Bargello are around, she's chill with Orsterra and that's all anybody in the story cares about. I will find it quite funny if they use that as an excuse to have her show up again in a future game.
>>734098636

all we see in game is that they were loyal to Tatloch, despite not fitting aesthetically with her forces at all and just being a dumb wrinkle that didn't need to happen
I think they only exist because of how piecemeal the gacha chapters were they wanted to show someone trying to manipulate Pardis and they hadn't thought of who that would be at the time

Playing through 0 now and man it really sucks having the protag be the only person who can engage with the job system. It was the most enjoyable part of the first two games for me.
Swapping around passives and shit just doesn't allow for enough gameplay variety. I am only about 25 hours in but I don't like the methodology that swapping play styles is done by swapping entire party makeups with different characters. I know it's a gacha first so I'm not supposed to get attached to any characters but thats what made the first two games so great. I'm just kind of disappointed as someone that absolutely adores the first two games
>>
>>734109073
she took too long dealing with her baggage and missed her chance
>>734109245
I agree, having 2 rows doesn't make up for losing subjobs. Would've preferred having that back and having the game focus on just 8 characters instead of giving you 30+ who mostly end up even shallower than normal because they don't ever do anything outside of their joining event
>>
>>
>>734109245
I didn't mind the idea of it, but I wish they weren't so fucking stingy with unique classes. They're so fucking few and far between and backloaded on top of it. Only really Stia gets to be your unique early character with a weapon combo that can be surprisingly useful, but she inevitably gets phased out because her usefulness fades until she gets her ult (and unless you're grinding Caits/Puffs, that's taking a long fucking while).
I get the OT1 crew having their weapons from their jobs, that makes perfect sense, but there's no reason for everyone that has a 'base job' to be limited to those weapons. And I really expected some kind of "Equip [Weapon Type]" passive to get unlocked somewhere down the line, I can't believe that doesn't exist.

Having 2 rows arguably feels even worse because of how the game is balanced around it. I find myself not even needing healers anymore because most times you can just swap rows and have them auto heal. That and the numbers feel so weird because bosses will hit for like 50-75% of character health with an attack and all my heals heal characters for full health at such low SP cost. The balance in this game just feels so weird to me but maybe it evens out later in the game?

It's especially confusing because her story, while not exactly the darkest, follows an understandable "killing your way up the underworld" trajectory. Then it just fucking veers off course in the span of a single chapter. So hard you'd think another writing team took over at the last second.
>>
>>734093234
Most people just like how refreshingly VICIOUS some of her in-battle quotes are especially for a healer. Meta-wise, Concoct and Drastic Measures are her main standouts and she's really versatile compared to some of the other characters (ie, Osvald).

Wouldn't have gotten past the CERO ratings.
The extremely mutilated bloody mess of that one rich guy in BoW2 got a pass because the (non-battle) character sprites are very pixelated.
Also, not outright having rape on-screen doesn't mean players are incapable of imagining it.
>>
>>
>>734110115
>maybe it evens out later in the game
It doesn't; other than the sidequest to recruitReime, the final boss (not the "true final boss" which is piss easy in comparison), and potentially the phoenix monster in the arena, the game is piss easy.
Superboss is even an utter joke compared to Galdera in OT1 and OT2 and Extra Battles Vide + True Vide.

Stia was an interesting take on an Apothecary adjacent class. Completely oriented around team support of funneling SP and BP to the right character when they need it and spot heal when necessary. Getting SP and E. Def boosting passives and putting Rest on her also really helped her in that role.

That's Team Asano's subjob games in general.
Actual gamers who utilize the game mechanics to any sensible degree can set up gamebreaking combos or grind (BD/OT) and/or explore (OT) enough to abuse the job/class system.
Meanwhile, normies who don't understand that concept can get filtered.

>Superboss is even an utter joke compared to Galdera in OT1 and OT2 and Extra Battles Vide + True Vide.
i was shit scared of him at first because i heard he had 30 shields, a bp bar and 1.2 million health. Then, when I finally sat down and tried to defeat him, I just used Carinas ult constantly, put reime at 1hp and equipped action skills for the bosses weakpoints so that i could break him. I defeated him on the first fucking try with no nuts used, compare that to galdera in both 1 and 2 and the extra battles where i sat there for an entire fucking day trying to beat them.
What makes galdera(and by extension true vide(the wicked)) so hard is that you need to split your team up into 2 different ones so that you cant just use the strongest comp in phase 1, you need to defeat him in stage 2 as well. It also doesnt help that you can use the ults and bp is pretty much useless.
>>
>>
>>734127016
sazantos screaming "the blue flame is my soul, my guardian" everytime you ult is pretty cool i guess. Still, for me the coolest attack in all of OT are probably Winnehildes battlecry and Aebers reckoning(from OT1)
>>
>>
>>
>>734127016
Cyrus + potency weapons + surpassing power + elemental expertise/price of power + his ult. Add Lux and Tenebrae multi-hit for coverage and the ST great damage Ice spell for cheap big damage.
I'm also very happy with my Swiftbolt Apothecary MC build (w/Tonitrus and Veil of Darkness for AoE and coverage/utility) which makes him a potent damage dealer once the break happens.
>>
>>
>>
>>734132250
I also used Hunter but I probably used it poorly as a frontliner when it's final Support Skill is proof it was made to be a backliner.
Should've switched him over to Merchant and freed up a custom slot (I was still spamming Mystic Shot).
>>
>>
>>734132961
we know little about galdera's origin or reasons for his consuming ambitions. what bits we do have are he killed his mother out of the womb, he had no particular talents like his siblings and his mother had hoped his heart would keep him from going astray. the bones of which I find very similar to sazantos's story. they're both representations of the peaks of corrupt ambition. I don't think it's a coincidence that galdera steps in when sazantos steps out. the chosen one is also a vessel and parallel to aelfric. I'd like to think the actual story here is a proxy of the sibling rivalry of the gods, which gives sazantos's redemption ending some nuance. like aelfric couldn't save his brother, but he could prevent a similar tragedy. or maybe I'm just coping that sazantos gets away with it all.
>>
>>734124686
They're designed to filter you if you're bad at turn based games (which I didn't think was possible until I saw that post from that one guy on /v/). If you're good at them you can easily find the broken strategies. The true test of skill is the super boss, and the autistic masochist's test of skill is in the extra battles. There's something for everyone.

>Hikari - Conjurer

hikari - conjurer
throne - inventor
osvald - arcanist

paritio - cleric
casti - cleric
ochette - dancer
temenos - merchant
agnea - merchant
because if i remember right, clerics sacred shield ability, when booster, worked on a lot of the super bosses attacks, and the merchant final summon always removes shields
my whole strategy was just spamming the shit out of cait summons with ochette and using sacred shields then just buffing and doing damage with hikari

damn, where was this said? I played all 3 games and cant remember anything about that(unless it was said in the gacha of course). Regardless, you wrote down a very good explanation for the parralels, I wish someone made a fanfic of the life of the gods and how galderas birth and orsas death affected them. I cant imagine they must have been happy to have to kill their youngest brother, especially Aelfric, Dother or Steorra. Id do it myself if i wasnt completely shite at writing.
On that note, i just thought how cool itd be if in some future installment, sazantos was the person who gives the first quest of the game and it ends with us fighting galdera again, only this time he and the chosen one finally lay him to rest/redeem him/whatever, but idk its just a thought I guess.
>>
>>734137551
Armsmaster is best used on oswald or castti, no? You can give oswald the same damage output as OTM for like 1/4 of the SP cost via elemental weapon attributes, and castti can make concoct into a magical nuke at 1hp with alpiones amulet.
Then again, I did use Armsmaster Agnea to defeat the first set of arms in the True Vide fight, so I guess theres a lot of options.
>>
>>734138857
you dont use up consumables in the extra battles, i think they reset after your fight, and if not, then after you back out of the arena location to the title screen.
But what superboss build were you running? It took me not long to defeat them with Armsmaster Throne, Merchant Partitio, Inventor Agnea and Cleric Castti. Granted, Throne had alpiones and i put all my nuts into her, but it cant have been that hard, right?

Hopes/Expectations/Fears for OT3? Ill start
Hopes:
>Bestiary for the hunter where you can view enemies and their weakpoints/health/attacks and can switch them into your captured inventory if you have captured it beforehand so you dont need to look for a monster if you have already captured it
>A lot of more learned skills for the warrior
>Reworked Guide/Allure mechanic like in OT0, i dont want to waste a turn on a npc only for him to waste it by attacking the enemy and dealing like 10hp damage
>Scholar reveals a weakness of an enemy every turn instead of every battle
>Also overhaul of magic attacks, you dont need to do a lot of setup for triple hit, instead a passive and/or an accessory
>8 advanced classes instead of just 4
>unique pixel art not just for weapons but for armor, shields(seen when defending), headwear, etc, that you can toggle off if you want to look at their normal outfits
>expanded cooking mechanic, dont need to capture enemies and mince them, if you defeat them you get ingredients
>optional hard mode where bosses have more hp and more shields
>monster story bosses are used in overworld dungeons as bosses(they already did that in OT0, now we just need a lot more like ones from OT1, i wanna fight alfyns chapter 4 boss ffs)
Expectations:
>new mechanic similar to day/night cycle in OT2
>unique path actions for different characters again should the above come true
>great story with good characters that all comes together at the end of the game
>looks even more beautiful than OT2
>great music as always
>hunter is a morally reprehensible old man while warrior and scholar are cute girls
>new gods, wheter they are orsas children or evil gods like vide
>cameo from old character like mikk and makk or alfred hornburg
Fears:
>using the same engine as OT1
>add 2 row battle
>no way to get 100x EXP and JP easily like with Alrond
>Bosses are all piss easy and you can break them in one turn immediately after they were broken
>Latents are replaced by Ultimates

i think its bullshit that you need to go back to aelfrics altar again. As anon said, who the fuck would go back there? If they said something like "Maybe I should go back to the Altar again because he seems strong", then maybe I could see it, but we get fucking nothing. I wanted to defeat Galdera with Brands Blade since my MC was a Warrior, but I was shit out of luck with no strong sword skill

the games cost peanuts to make and so far, the series has been a financial success. Itd be weird for them not to make OT3. Then again, Im hoping for a Triangle strategy sequel.

I don't know if you can necessarily say that. Since it has one focused story the story is much better that than what is in 1 or 2. It also uses the 8 character gimmick better since they all participate in combat at the same time.

I chose Mahina because Ochette seemed like more of a physical fighter and I wanted to balance her out with more magic.

I was playing through 1 and gave up halfway through doing everyone's chapter 3. You're telling me I have to grind up all the characters and then have my main character be +15 levels over everyone else? I really wish I could finish it because everything about the game is great (some of the chapters have been real stinkers though)

i always found it pretty weird how in a town that apparently was full of moonshade cultists everyone is just totally chill with ochette, who represented the biggest thread to the eternal night after temenos and oswald.
On that note, Pom also most likely is a moon shade cultists(unless that fat fuck was kicked from it because all he thought of was food). not a lot of times where your "enemy" is actually your ally.
I also think its bs that Pom wasnt the Dark Hunter. You can figure out every stories main antag by looking which character begins with a letter of OCTOPATH and then rearranging it a bit, and the only character in Ochettes story with a P in their name as the first letter is Pom. Its not like we can recruit Pom in the post game anyway, I think its bs. Also would have been hilarious for the Dark Hunter to have Poms personality and just chill over Terras bedroom.

>You can figure out every stories main antag by looking which character begins with a letter of OCTOPATH and then rearranging it a bit
they don't need to be rearranged, its in the reverse order of the party's names:Osvald - Harvey
Castti - Trousseau
Temenos - Arcanette
Ochette - Petrichor
Partitio - Ori
Agnea - Tanzy
Throne - Claude
Hikari - Oboro

It works but I don't think the devs (and other people who did the ordering) understood that they accidentally/purposely switched Ochette's and Throne's spots with Osvald's and Temenos's respectively. ie Their Journal stained glass murals and the opening.

The game’s ost (and the gramaphone’s track list) also has the character themes of Ochette and Throne before Osvald and Temenos. I didn’t know til recently that the order used to be different. It feels weird with Osvald first.

Something about this series draws out this odd feeling in me that I don't get with many other games. I want to say comfort, but I don't know if that's the right word. Maybe it's nostalgia because of the HD2D? Either way, I loved the first 2 games.

I'm not sure that saves her given she lacks potency tools to make up for it, though I don't think she is the absolute worst character in the game. She can be used well in the first half of the game (i.e. before completing Master of All), but with the second half unlocking Surpassing Power and much better multi-hit moves (and bow users), that's around the point where I benched her.

concoct is fun
I thought her story was leading up to her righting the wrongs she had previously committed as a member of a vilified apothecary group, but nah she was always just a pretty boring person. Easily one of the weaker parts of OT2.

OT1 was rough around the edges, so I was happy with OT2 being 1 but more. For OT3 I want them to make bigger changes to make it fresher. I hope they improve dungeon design, but I'm not holding out.
But keep the music. Biggest snub in GOTY awards.
