What confuses me is how this makes sense strategically from a corporate perspective.

Shutting down criticism or negative opinions is good for keeping existing fans happy (who want to live in their delusion) and to a certain degree your own staff who don't want to acknowledge that the product they made is bad. But this isn't how you encourage growth, which is the cornerstone of all modern industry. People who AREN'T fans yet, or who were fans but aren't anymore, will see this type of behavior as tyrannical and will be less likely to give your products a chance in the future. Long-term it is not a good idea to shut down criticism like this because you're essentially shitting where you eat and, eventually, the food's going to start tasting weird.

It's complicated and a bit of a long story I'll try to summarise the best I can

Dawntrail caused a lot and I mean a lot of people to quit FF14.
It's the first big time since the game initially launched in it's first version there has ever been this level of criticism towards the game.
The damn broke against long standing issues and people had had enough and were venting their frustrations.

They weren't happy about the combat, the story, the graphics update, the lack of action against cheaters and then seeing the lack of actions to user complaints and requests from the devs, people were wanting to see YoshiP take seriously these complaints and address them in a Live Letter for transparency like he had done back in the 1.x days.

He did not do that, instead he got drunk on a Mahjong streams and the complaints got so bad they had to close the live chat.

Wuk Lamat was also banned in all Square Enix live chats along with all emotes that looked like Lions because the character was so unpopular

I'm skipping over some other scandals and events but all of this culminated in early 2025 where Square Enix sent out a press release stating they will no longer tolerate criticism and negativity towards their developers and will take the harshest action possible up to and including legal action against people who criticise their staff.

The official FF14 forums for the Japanese side are heavily moderated and any negativity, complaints or criticisms are banned, you need to have an active subscription to the game to post on the forums, so SE were banning their own players instead of addressing their complaints, this led to frustration upon frustration and places like this blog website blowing up in popularity.

They would mostly repost Game news articles about FF14 but they have an open comment section under the article and people would discuss the game openly, still all Anon but it was basically a 'lite' version of 4chan /v/ threads for FF14.

Ironic. I've noticed that SquareEnix is in a ~10 year time lag. As far as they are concerned its peak woke, leftist mind virus with tranny worship, cancel culture and crybullying the norm. They haven't moved with the pendulum, and that's why they will cease to exist before the end of this decade.
