What went so terribly wrong? They absolutely nailed the combat and parkour, but the quests are absolute MMO tier trash. There's not a single memorable one, no memorable characters either or plot points. It's about the most boring setting and story you could do, which contrasts with Obsidian's traditional strengths...

The largest complain I've heard is that the game has some retarded tier items systems, and depending on what tier of specific weapon / armor piece you wear you can only drop a new weapon / armor of that tier. And enemies scaling in some weird ass way depending on your gear tier too. Feels like some gacha game with tiers rather than RPG with levels and stats.

The main part is their game was too close to Bethesda Elder Scrolls.
The reason Skyrimlike isn't a thing as how Soulslike is a thing is because of the work to get at the same point is far too much.
If you're making a first person RPG, you NEED to copy and improve what Skyrim did.
You need NPCs with schedules, you need all props to be interactable, you need physics on arrows, you need "cutscenes" that happen between NPCs in the open world and all of the Skyrim stuff. And this is just to match a 15 year old game, you need to do more on top of that, you need to improve it.
Avowed was destined to die. The game wasn't going to dethrone Skyrim and it's setting wasn't good enough to make people overlook what it lacked. There's a reason why Avowed Vs Skyrim videos propped up as soon as the game released.

It's nothing like Elder Scrolls.
For one, it's an actual RPG, where you can have meaningful consequences to secondary quests that affect the main quest and vice versa
Second, it has good gameplay and build variety so you don't play stealth archer
Third, who gives a fuck about player count? Starfield and Skyrim and Fallout 4 sold millions and they are worthlless garbage, pigs are attracted to slop, what else is new?

Parrying with a 2h sword that does blood explosions on counter attack was v fun
The movement was great too, just felt good to move and fight in the world
Didn't love the companions but they were fine
Sapadal was the best writing in the game
Shorter length kept the pacing good
Overall 8/10 enjoyed my time
