Been playing the Batman games recently in release order for the first time. They each got better with each installment but holy fuck Knight shits on all of them so hard, and the previous 3 are pretty good too. This game is insane. What a leap in terms of gameplay and visuals. I am actually shocked this game is 11 years old.

knight is the best gameplay-wise if you're not mentally, (or apparently) physically handicapped

I think a lot of the hate Knight got was because
a) it was released in a badly optimized / buggy state on PC
b) everyone saw the jason todd """twist""" coming.
c) people didn't like how much batmobile there was in the game, the previous 2 didn't have any vehicle sections or anything so you were always fighting guys or just gliding around.
Regardless, it's the best game in the series and the most polished and refined in terms of combat. Even the batmobile, for as much criticism as it gets, it's very polished and refined and actually challenging in some of the challenges, sometimes frustratingly so.
But I loved doing all the combat challenges with each character, they were truly hard to get the perfect freeflows on. Also the killer croc one where you have to get a combo of like 250x+ to get him to spawn, took me quite a few times to get it but it was really fun because the combat truly is really well polished.

I've also gone through Arkham games last year, and playing them close to each other makes me notice some subtle improvements between each entry, like how City added the ability to slide that lets you go through vents without needing to sit down and open them

The leap between Asylum and City is also insane for me.
The fact the two games are 2 years apart despite the amount of game mechanics have added/improved for combat and stealth is very impressive.
But still, going from Origins and Knight is a massive leap too. I can't think of a recent game that big of a leap.
One aspect of the series that's really underappreciated is the soundtrack.

Fully agree. Arkham games are peak vidya and one of the rare examples of each progressive game noticeably growing in depth and complexity without ever deviating from the core gameplay that made it so good in the first place. Knight is the full, realised conclusion of Arkham's gameplay loop, regardless of its flaws, and it's so very satisfying.
To think that Asylum and Knight are only six years apart is amazing from a graphical point of view as well. 10/10 Series.

I love me some Batgirl butt. Easily the best thing about the game.

Arkham Knight is visually stunning, even today. That’s what good art direction does. The way the rain breaks though the neon signage and drips down Batmans cape… kino. Unfortunately, the story isn’t written by Paul Dini like Asylum and City, so it’s unfortunately poor.
tl;dr the game looks great but the story sucks
