How the fuck are we getting fewer directs now than during the WiiU? It's been like 8 months since bananza and no big switch 2 games have been announced since. The console isn't even a year old yet

Because the structure is different.
Yoshis Woolly World is a good example, it appears in like 4 different Directs and one of them was a lengthy dev talk that included the origins of the yarn amiibos. Maybe like 30min of promotional content spread over multiple broadcasts.
Now look at Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. One 2min trailer and probably one more before launch.
Same kind of game, different approach to marketing.

This.
Wii U era directs had poor pacing and would frequent have repeat showings for the same games. Developer interviews were also far more common back then, while today they'd rather treat those separate to Directs (if bothering with them at all)

Random wiiu era direct I pull out
>majora's mask 3ds - 3 minutes
>codename steam announcement - 2 minutes
>nes remix - 2 minutes
>Captain Toad treasure tracker - 3 minutes
>amiibo - 1 minute
>mario kart 8 dlc - 3 minutes
>kirby and the rainbow curse - 2 minutes
>more amiibo - 1 minute
>Smash duck hunt reveal - 3 minutes
>indies and misc - 2 minutes
>sonic boom - 1 minute
>monster hunter mario costume - 1 minute
>pikmin short movies - 2 minutes
>Xenoblade X update and release date - 2 minutes
>Splatoon 2nd trailer + campaign reveal and release date - 3 minutes
This is substantially more than the JRPG and cozy game slop pile of most modern directs even if most of the games were already revealed

2014 was by far their strongest year for Wii U game announcements, and even then this direct is full of repeats for things people already knew (including cpt. toad, xenoblade x, splatoon, kirby rainbow curse, etc.); they leaned pretty hard on smash at the time.
