I'm glad I'm not the only one who enjoys the mech stages. Score attacking on them will never not be fun. Once you get the momentum going and you lock in, it's a blast.

Tale as old as 1999. It's funny how the same garbage is spouted about Shenpoo as well. SA1 is fun but it is is an objectively bad game, SA2 is where they got their shit together, absolutely everything is an improvement because it turns outSA1 actually did have potential

In atmosphere aesthetic and vibes yes, but I liked the SA2 levels and story more.
Still I've got like 100x the time in SA1 because it was fun to just run around looking at shit and exploring.
And while I'd say the songs in SA2 were much better, the SA1 soundtrack had amazing soul power, the beach really felt like a beach, the ice levels felt cold, the volcano levels felt hot, the ancient jungle temple felt ancient, etc...
SA1 is why I appreciate Mario Odyssey so much, it's practically a spiritual successor and what I'd want SA3 to be like

i can't stand the mech stages and have to take breaks almost every time i get to one. they really fuck with the pacing. there's this mod that puts all the levels and cutscenes into chronological order and while it makes the plot more coherent, you realize that there's just too many mech stages.

it's a fun way to replay the game. sonic doesn't even show up until you're like 15 minutes in which makes it feel kinda cinematic.

Public opinion has flipped in the last couple of years, weirdly. For a long time every Sonic fan I've met or seen considered SA2 superior. I think Battle coming out before DX and being the better port played a hand in it. Then the PC ports came, the blog shilling the DC version and the mods fixing it, and now everyone thinks SA1 is better

In the Tokyo International Forum, you can see the Ninja Lights system in action. Dynamic shadows, lights and other effects that aren’t seen in the final game.
The final game removed most of the Ninja Lights system, but some of it is still leftover. Some objects like the TVs still use Ninja Lighting.
In Mystic Ruins, green bit was supposed to be a poor man's global illumination--i.e the grass "reflecting" green light.
The Dreamcast had the ability to perform what was called Order Independent Transparency which SA2 used extensively for things such as item balloons and artificial chaos. When SA2 and SA1 was ported to Gamecube, many of the transparency features that the Dreamcast had couldn't be replicated and they were never fixed for the PC port.
Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 were extremely ambitious. Sonic Adventure 2 is a much, much, much more robust game internally than SA1. I cannot stress that enough. It is much more flexible in every conceivable way, and it is really impressive how much Sonic Team improved on in such a short time frame. But it is still obviously based on SA1 and shares a lot of infrastructure, albeit greatly improved.

One of the more personal reasons I enjoy SA1 is because there are bits where the overall aesthetic of the saturated textures, polycount, and lighting heavily reminds me of PSO.
The Dreamcast really had a soul and SEGA was tuned into it.

Because SA1 is easy as FUCK, the Tails stages are a complete and utter joke and if you think any of the Gamma Stages except for maybe the last one with the train is better than the mech levels from SA2 then you're insane.
SA2 is not the hardest game ever but it's challenging enough and the rank system along with pulling cool shit feels rewarding, no hub sucks but for the type of story they had they would need a lot of them and it'd make the game lose some of the "around the world and beyond" feel.
I love BOTH games a lot for different reasons SA1 really made you feel "the future is here" and SA2 is when gaming finally peaked and it also marked the end of the 90's, yes it was well into 2001 but that game and FFX closed off the 90s with a bang.
