The real problem with Marathon is that they need to sell roughly 3.5 million copies just to break even.
That it to say; the game could have 2 million players and still be considered a financial failure. Bungie is retarded.

This doesn't account for mtx. It all depends how much they push their microtransactions. If you have a loyal customer base of 100,000 that regularly spends, its more valuable than selling 3.5 million boxes.

Ignoring OP being a retard or rage baiter and not realizing the demo is over or he did.
Final Day had around 20K players.
Which is still like more than a 90% drop.
Now the Beta was gonna strip all progress so chances are most people stooped playing after lvl 10 so they at lest get the bonus in full relese.
But still 150k players on steam from a Big name developer game when it was free is not looking that good.
Because question is how many people will actually buy it.

I both love and hate that the /v/ 4chan meta is now to make the most retarded post you can make, using the most retarded logic possible, and then all the ESLs and third worlders who don't play games at all and just shitpost latch onto the negative-logic shitpost and the 3 people on /v/ with an IQ higher than 75 can't fight the mob of retards because they 1) *want* to shitpost, and 2) literally can't understand the reasons the shitpost is fundamentally logically flawed and incorrect.

It was already a grind just to get to lvl 10 for most people.
So i doubt most people wanted to grind to lvl 30.
It took me 10+ hours to get to lvl 10 and as much as i liked the game i did not want to spend my entire weekend grinding it.

So, Bungie closing in the next few years is a real possibility, huh?
>>
>>
>>734149846
>If you have a loyal customer base of 100,000 that regularly spends,
Those are some incredibly optimistic numbers considering how small extraction shooter playerbases tend to be. Marauders never broke 15k and is completely dead at this point, Hunt Showdown never broke 60k and now averages like 15k on a good day, and Tarkov which is the biggest hardcore extraction shooter averages like 50k players. The only one that's really maintaining 100k+ players is Arc Raiders and that's purely because it's more casual so it appeals to a wider audience.
It's basically the whole reason why Bungie is so fucking retarded for sinking so much time and money into a hardcore extraction shooter. Shit was never going to maintain a large fanbase because it's an extremely niche genre. Some people might enjoy the all or nothing style of them, but for most people constantly losing all of their shit every time they're killed on a run is just an exercise in frustration.

>fifth match some invisible robot spawns in and just annihilates us in our shitty free sponsor gear
>sixth match a team of players just come in and wreck us
Yeah I can see why there are only 1k players. I'm glad they managed to find their audience of hardcore pissjug gamers who will whale their game into profitability.
>>
>>734150687
Think bigger picture. This was a safe bet, Bungie is being safe. A repeatable gameplay loop is easier to pitch, budget, produce, and ship than another singleplayer or whatever Destiny is. They don't need 100k+ players, they don't even need 50k. They just need 15k, steady cash flow. A big budget singleplayer FPS with multiplayer in today's day and age? Who is that for in a world of tiktok, gacha, etc. Bungie's throwing their hat in this arena and if it doesn't succeed then it's no great loss.
>>
>>734150917
Marathon has been in development for 5 years and Bungie is known for having one of the highest burn rate in the entire industry.
They can't afford to have this be a small or medium hit; it needs to be a major hit to justify all the money that was poured into it.
Not to mention they have Sony breathing down their back wanting to know why they spent $3.6 billion to acquire them
>>
>>
>>
>>734150917
My brother in christ, the free playtest was losing 5-10k people a day. the FREE playtest.
Even if you compare it 1:1 to Arc, the Marathon playtest had 50% lower numbers and worse sentiment throughout, and now the game is going to cost $40 for anyone to play.
Like >>734151164 said, Bungie spent five years on this and probably spent at least 250m, and you're not making back $250m + tip with a daily peak of 50k. Shit, you probably need to do Arc numbers for a year or more to make that much cash back. And on top of everything, you still have to cover your operational costs, so add another 100m for one year. They're fucked.
>>
>>734151164

I don't have a personal stake in this. No Man's Sky didn't see real returns into what 4 or 5 years later? My contention was saying this was a safe bet, and it is. It's not CoD Infinite Warfare which requires full motion capture, professional actors, writers, cutscene animators, cutscene cinematographers, etc. It's a multiplayer shooter.

>Yandere Simulator
I'm pretty sure Marathon wasn't being made by one dude. More likely it was 100s of people in one of the most expensive cities on Earth.
>Sure in the 2000s.
No. It's still been true in recent years. Sony's COO Hiroki Totoki has even made comments on it and it's led to massive layoffs at the studio

Yeah and Sony expects a return on investment.
>>
>>
>>734151824
NMS actually sold well initially because of the hype. It gave Sean Murray a runway to keep building the game.
His studio is also like only 11 people. That's a hell of a lot cheaper than keeping Bungie running.

>bigger budget than even Concord
Wait really?
JFC what devs think its a good idea to spend more than 250m and over 9000 years dev time on a game that is not GTA levels of popular.
Its amazing it took the gayming market this long to cool down. So many people just play the same few games. Because like its just so fun to spend a decade+ on a game. Update after update getting really gud at a game. Also the prices of games is getting insane especially when you throw in shit quality passes DLC seasonal shit loot boxes fucking wasting money on just skins&items that are basically quality of life shit that should be patched in for free monthly subs etc etc etc etc.
Game companies going full on kike making so much money from a few whales. While claiming they dont have money to make real updates. Making millions every fucking month. Hiring the worst devs imaginable to worok on the fucking game. Releasing shit content after shit content that only the most mentally retarded whales stay because they have spent so much money on the game. They cant sell their accounts to someone for money. Bceause the games playerbase keeps (((nosediving))) thanks to the greedy shit qaulity. Yet they keep upping the prices to shit and shrinking stuff in game.
>Record profits

Ah, the mark of a genius. Just repeating the same phrase over and over again. No rebuttal or debate, just insults. But maybe I need to make more of an effort to reach across to this most intelligent individual.
PEOPLE ARE PAID TO LOOK ENTHUSIASTIC IN COMMERCIALS. ACTORS, CELEBRITIES, POLITICIANS, ETC. THE SAME AS STREAMERS. THAT YOU RECOGNIZE COMMERCIALS AS MARKETING BETTER THAN STREAMERS IS A FAULT OF YOUR OWN MAKING. THEY'RE THE SAME THING. MONEY IS MOVED INTO THE POCKETS OF PEOPLE TO MAKE A PRODUCT OR SERVICE LOOK GOOD.
Now, if you wanted to be, at least, a truly principled individual, you would say "all marketing should be illegal". Or just ban capitalism.

This is why game demos stopped being a thing once vidya went to shit. Demos used to generate hype because people would want more, now devs avoid them because they will make players realize how shit the game actually is.

>>
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>734155350
I think it was a failure from the perspective of 'lets stress test the servers' (since they didn't break 150k), but probably a success from a free marketing perspective. Because if it didn't happen, you'd get more people potentially buying the game on launch, but also way higher refunds when they realize it isn't for them. The perception of the game wouldn't change either way; it just came out earlier with the playtest.
>>
>>
Genuinely don't give a shit about this game and am not even gonna buy it but what's with faggots here being disingenuous rn? The beta is over it should be at 0. It's peak for a demo of a game not even out is pretty good at 140k+. And it managed to retain 50k all weekend. Again not the official release so there's less incentive to continue playing
>>
>>734155525
I don't know what you mean by the Babylon jab, but yea. Capitalism is when you hire shills to make your product look good.
>want to create business to make good or offer service
>sell idea of business to people
>people give you money to start business in hopes of getting a return on their investment
Marketing the idea of the business is key to getting the capital necessary for capitalism and you can sell that idea better when you pay people, or promise payment in some form, to help you make that a reality.
But we can go even more fundamental than that. Marketing is simply a branch of persuasion. Convincing someone of something they otherwise would not necessarily have been convinced of. And its the most non-violent and transparent way of doing it.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>734149991
The number of players kept going down every day. That was a free demo for a controversial game people were curious about. How many will be returning when the price of entry is $40? Overall the server slam did more harm than good, confirming people's negative first impression, leaving only Bungiecucks and Blast havers™
And I simply don't believe it will bring in new players, the game is too niche to attract normies and pull big numbers, both in artstyle, gameplay, and difficulty
>>
>>
>>734150750
>actual people logging in daily
Puff, that would mean that those Steam numbers are slightly below half of their total playerbase, based on the estimates of an anonymous expert who is familiar with numbers from 1 to 10. Especially number 4.

Nothing about making a big budget extraction shooter only is safe. That's why it's such a strange decision by Bungie and for Sony to have bought them. Destiny 3 would have been the safe bet, or even just a conventional game with multiple game modes for that matter
>>
The only legacy this game will have (other than being another stepping stone on Bungie's path towards shutdown/absorption into other Sony studios) is being another totem for anti-gamer shitlib journos and replyguys to use as an example of "high art" games that meanie-bo-beanie savage gamerchuds didn't appreciate.
>>
>>734158096
It'll be Concord 3 in that it's a life service shooter that will flop and underperform financially, similar to Highguard. It won't die in two weeks, despite how funny that would be.
Bungie's fate likely depends on Marathon because Sony isn't happy with them and Destiny 2 is, so if Marathon gets dropped, Bungie goes with it.

That's unrealistic. It will get 20-30k players like all the other extraction slops do. Arc only gets 200k because it's catering to literal parents with kids. Marathon is more tarkov/hunt showdown. Which is NOT user friendly.
The problem is 30k is not enough to justify the hundreds of millions they burnt on this game. They blew too much money on it. Deserves to fail and that's fine. I don't give a shit, plenty of 10/10 games around these days from Indies
>>
>>734157793
i'm making a game myself. in my case it's easy for me because the game's simple as shit, but i will still have to delete 99% of the project and pray to god i don't introduce some nonsensical bug in the process of doing so that it will ruin the look of the demo. aaa games are so insanely bloated that trying to cut off 99% of itself would probably brick the demo build for several months before it becomes playable again.
also consider that there's literally no reason to do a demo if you're an established studio. people will just buy your shit anyway off brand name alone. demos are only for devs who are starting out and need to prove that they can make a game worth buying.

>>
>>734158441
'Concord' applies to live service games that flop, with the title being more accurate the faster they flop. In that respect, Highguard will be closer to the true Concord than Marathon will, but both will flop and not hit their financial targets. The F2P marathon playtest was already losing about 7.5k players per day on the weekend, which is the opposite of what Bungie needs the game to do. So, already, it looks unhealthy.
But I'm sure you can somehow convince yourself to ignore these objective metrics and pretend the game will outperform and recoup its nine figure dev cost.

>Marathon didn't have massive funding
Estimated dev costs put it at $250m to $300m in staff salaries alone for the five years it's been going. It may actually cost more than Concord did when you factor in marketing.
>dies in two weeks
Concord got shut down entirely in two weeks, which won't happen to Marathon. However, the two week launch period is when a game makes the majority of its sales, so we'll know by Marathon's first weekend the amount of trouble it's in.

Look, it's simple.
If you're a chef, and you take a dump on every customer's plate, you deserve to be unemployable in the food industry.
If you're the restaurant owner, and you circle the wagons around that chef and insist on hiring more dump-taking chefs, your restaurant deserves to go out of business, and the people who stayed should be looked at with great suspicion by the rest of the industry.

>invade hobby specifically to change the community and hobby itself, and actively hate and speak out against said community
>"What the fuck, why does the hobby community like seeing me fail?"
Gatekeeping saves hobbies and communities. They can be supportive of new people, but they should be vicious against those who want to change it and can't enjoy anything of what it is.

I hate feeling like I'm a schizo but I saw a single. solitary. video on Marathon lore and now all of these videos from YouTube content creators I've never heard have all appeared on my feed; all of them coming out the entire day all at once. Check the release date of all of these too; it was after how hard the demo bombed, all the titles and wording in the videos are all the same.
If this isn't Bungie and or Sony pre-dropping damage control I don't know what is.

Even industry shills admit that western AAA is in trouble. They try to frame it as the game industry being in trouble, but the industry as a whole is objectively growing, and entertainment has historically done well during economic downturns, including the great depression. Across the entire entertainment industry (games, films, comics), it's only people who listen to them who are in trouble.
The reason why western entertainment is collapsing is because they keep hiring people who hate the average customer. They can either listen to us or face annihilation.

its just the shitty algorithm they have and the even shittier genre of videos/youtubers that produce ragebait slop with clickbait thumbnails and titles.
For me, It's anything with Asmon. If that retard is so much as mentioned in the last minute of a video, i'll suddenly get flooded with videos of him, and channels that try to spread his retarded opinion like the gospel. blocking the channels doesn't actually do anything.
The tragic thing is that some of these people are making thousands a month by just sitting in a chair for 10 minutes saying the inanest of things.

I'll bet that in a year, Marathon will wish that it had Overlord's fanbase.

Well AAA is a risk assessment credit rating. With AAA being a surefire bet that you'll get your money back.
Specific AAA games don't exist any more because the industry has lost sight of what actually sells.
Even GTA6 at this point can't be considered an AAA game, despite almost certainly going to be the biggest release in entertainment history, just purely on the fact of how long it's development has dragged on, thus blowing out production costs.

I view AAA as more of a label for a big budget game.
If you wanted to talk about something that would be guaranteed to make its money back, it would be something that cost $10M but ticked a bunch of boxes that would virtually guarantee $100M in the long run.
>How do we do this?
Well, a great first step would be to not run an adult daycare center for women and gays.

im starting to suspect the reason so many games are failing and are being dragged out is because the staff working on them dont care. they are getting paid for their job. They fully expect to be fired but they got paid, the damage is done for them.
