They didn't want a GoW2 situation with Kratos at the gates of Olympia, then thrown all the way down into Hades. It was corny then, it would be clowned on nowadays. This way, they get their cake and eat it too. The sequel game can be in Egypt or wherever, while the prequel explains more of the background story, how Faye died, how Kratos settled down, explore more of who Tyr is, etc.

My thinking is this: People like these devs only care about prestige, awards and good reviews. Making a masculine story with a male protagonist? That means a hit to your metacritic score. Having your protagonist kill Egyptian (aka BLACK) gods and enemies? Another hit to your metacritic score. If you start thinking like this, making a Norse prequel about some clam makes perfect sense.

Well that's the silver lining of this: Faye's dead and they're unlikely to bring her back, so only one game for her. I'm also thinking about what they mean by: "This will feel like a new IP. It will change God of War as a series. We want to make GoW the next MCU." And I think I know where they're going with this:

>She gets fatally wounded or poisoned
>Tyr gets some playable sections throughout the game
>The final epilogue is Tyr going off to see more realms
That way they have two Gods of War out there and double the realms to explore.

Even if it's just the writing team working on sequel for now it would be an upgrade from 2018 and Ragnarok. 2018 was too narrow in scope compared to GoW1. And Ragnarok was big, but no game could hope to be GoW2 & 3 in one game. Basically 2018 wasn't ambitious enough and Ragnarok was too ambitious.

If they wanted a third game with Norse era characters they should've just used Tyr. He's -actually- a god of war. No one gives half a shit about Faye, she's a nice mom and a good warrior and that's it. I would even say that actually seeing her in Ragnarok removed even more interest in her since she lost the air of mystery she had about her.
Oh the game will sell, no problem with that, and they're going to milk all the stuff people responded positively to in the last two games, but it won't do anywhere near the numbers of a real GoW game and they'll switch to working on an actual Kratos sequel fulltime as soon as it's done.

Because God of War has a history of prequel spin-offs. In fact, we just got a new one last month. Second, Cory Barlog is the dev on this game, and he was the one who fought for Kratos to be the main protag for GoW4. Also GoW4 & 5 set up Artreus and Tyr as the heroes of the story until Kratos was the one who actually changed fate. He's clearly still the main protagonist of the series or as Cory called him "You can't make a Mario game without Mario". It might be a new series, in the same universe, but isn't that still a spin-off if GoW continues with it's main games?
