It can be really distressing to think about but being able to read and write is technically only strictly optional for having really good intellect and planning skills.
Especially in a scifi sort of setting where you could probably just have the information directly uploaded into you rather than reading.

FF7 was a game where the scenarios were made in individual disconnected chunks. This is probably the reason why the idea behind Sephiroth and Jenova as villains gets messed up and the dumb solution they ended on was "uh.. Sephiroth was in control the entire time and did everything" despite the flashback being extremely contradictory as well as the fact he is believing in a false narrative he should know better about because he got his hands in the lifestream itself
