In his second novel it's the same shit.
He shows Tifa obsessing over her one memory with Cloud to show she doesn't know anything about him but the promise. But his readers take it as "she really is so in love with the real him".
He thinks he's portraying a young Aerith liking Zack more than he liked her, and showing it's a first love build more around dreams and admiration than an actual relationship.
But he ends up with two camps of readers, one saying "so he really is her true love" and another pissed off she was so into him in the first place.
The guy clearly overestimates his audience, how much they know or care about the story of the game, and how willing people are to engage with his contrived storytelling.
It's also hilarious this is the one topic he has decided to expand more and more over anything else.

Well, specifically in 2K gil to become a hero, Cloud mentions he has to become a soldier, and how he promised to become a special existence to Tifa. But it's all about what he wants, the promise is almost an excuse. At least Tifa bothers imagining some traits for him, even if they are wrong. But he never even thinks about her outside of the promise, even when it's the first time we've been in his head.

Here is where the disconnect exists with his storytelling. There are not many hints of this feelings in the game, even if in his head it makes perfect sense. That's why descriptions like him hugging her in remake being about his own ego catch people by surprise.

Cloud never viewed defeating Sephiroth as proving he's better than anyone, it was a raw response to the destruction of his town and the murder of his mother and Tifa.
His interactions with Tifa in retrilogy do cater to his sense of self satisfaction when he gets to be the cool hero he wanted to be.
