The intro to this video is absolutely phenomenal and I just discovered it today, if you haven't seen it take the 30 seconds to watch it. This kind of stuff really cements to me how, even if the gameplay isn't as strong, the aesthetic and story of the Dark Matter games are so powerful that they haven't really been topped. I disagree. She was already good friends with Dedede because he's been trying to be a good king since Adventure, and her paintings suggest she hangs out with him and his fellow bosses often. For the record I don't think Sakurai hates Kumazaki Kirby at all, it's just not what he would've done and he prioritizes his own stuff specifically with Kirby (he's a perfectionist from third person accounts we know of him)

Chef Kawasaki I think could've been the 4th mascot, and I wouldn't be surprised if HAL regrets not doing it internally. He's a very popular character (especially in Japan), he's got a cute and marketable design that's simple but iconic, he doesn't step on the toes of any other niche of the Kirby cast.

I bet if the question of a Fourth Mascot character happened after the Kirby Cafe became a hit, Kawasaki could've made it in.

Even Regular waddle dee is way more popular to the brand overall than Bandana. He's only constantly kept at 4th because Kumazaki doesn't want to think past him in playable character options when creating a game since his starting decision for rtdl. I don't even think Bandana dee is a "Kumazaki pet" like others say, i think he just picked bandana randomly in rtdl and stuck with that.

The Bandana Dee question is painful because Kirby feels more like a trio of the most important characters, with everyone outside that trio being sidelined. Look at the Kirby character encyclopedia. Bandana Dee is outside the core cast.

Waddle Dees are very marketable, but they're an nondescript goomba species. And an enemy species at that. Bandana Dee was the best way to make them playable, but it struggles because most Waddle Dee fans will stick with the default over the Bandana.

I think Bandana Dee would be more popular if either the games were willing to give him more personality (the struggle between being Kirby's friend and Dedede's loyal servant should be great for that) instead of just a needed player 2. We also struggle with the fact we don't get any supplementary Kirby stuff like manga, books, or such. America not getting an Archie Kirby adaptation was the robbing of the 2010s.

Kirby's most iconic mini-bosses that would even be in the running for this would be Bonkers, Mr. Frosty, and Chef Kawasaki. Bonkers overlaps with Dedede and just isn't a marketable design. Mr. Frosty's whole joke is his ass sticking out which they've reigned in and what's the point at that point. The ass thing also makes him a hard sell outside of Japan. Him being an arctic animal also overlaps with Dedede too.

Chef Kawasaki might actually be the best choice. My personal vote for a hypothetical 4th Kirby character would be a tie between Gooey, Adeleine, and Kawasaki.
