Any pointers for my DQV TTRPG concept? Still being fleshed out

>Set in the Kingdom of Gotha, 100 or so years after the events of DQV
>Haven't decided on a canon bride, maybe I'll just go with Bianca since she's my preferred one, or leave it ambiguous. Not really a big deal either way
>The Kingdom has expanded, as monster tamers became part of it's military
>Generally a kingdom where humans and monsters live in harmony
>Monster Wrangling and Battling has become a common sport in Gotha
>Prestidigitators and Old men of the sea are court wizards well respected in it's magical academies
>Golems work in construction and defense.
>Healslimes and relates slimes are part of the local clergy

>After the events of DQV, the following monster communities and villages were established by monsters tamed by Madason/hero
>Dwight invites fellow dwarves to live in Gotha, as well as elves(establishing dwarves and elves as playable races)
>Goodian invited his clan to live in Gotha, establishing a community of slime knights as citizens(halflings will be playable, slightly modified to fit slime knights better)
>Ward establishes an orc village in the kingdom(orcs will be playable)
>The previously mentioned races won't be treated as monsters, but other sentient races that can tame their own monsters, with halflings/slime knights coming right out of the box with their own green slmes
>Maybe I'll also reflavor mandrake marshals and hawk men with Dragonborn and Aarakockra stats if I want to use 5e

>Estark may or may not be the villain

I'm thinking that Gotha gets besieged by Estark's forces during a Monster Arena game as the impetus for the players to get into action.
>>
>>557798786
The only way I can see the bride's identity mattering is if you wanted to do something with Stockenbarrel or Mostroferrato based on who wasn't chosen.
Remember that in the world of IV/V monsters can and often do turn into humans when well treated. There's Healie but also the whole town of former monsters in Nadiria.
You might want to check out the Heroes games if you haven't before. Don't get too excited for a good story, but they both take place in worlds where monsters are normally all friendly (1) or live in separate but mostly peaceful kingdoms (2). I always felt like Heroes 1 represented what the future of V's world would be like, even though it's definitely not supposed to be that.
>>
I'm actually a bit glad that DQ12 won't have to target the Switch 1 hardware by this point.
Now that there're no remakes on the roadmap and we're not on an awkward generation shift it would be a really good time to get some news.

A lot of people call Matilda an "OC" for whatever reason even though she existed the entire time and Horii said that he wanted to do more with her for a very long time. I guess its because barely anyone plays 2.

>>557827473
She pretty much is an OC. Nothing about who she is now matches her original portrayal beyond being a princess and a sister.

>>557827576
He's literally his son. Divine intervention led to him switching wombs in mid-term. It's just that nobody but the player ever figures this out.
>>
>>557829628
A lot of the stuff in 2HD was made up for that game by using what little character that we had for the cast if at all. So by that logic, we're playing with a cast of OCs.

OCs are used specifically to refer to characters that were specifically added to a remake/port, chief example being the litany of remake only girls in Atlus RPGs.
>>
>>557831079
Lady Cannock wasn't a character even by 8-bit standards. She was an NPC who only had one block of relevant dialogue explaining that her brother's a scatterbrain, and you could go the whole game without ever knowing she exists. As far as I'm concerned, she in 2HD is an all-new character at best based on an otherwise-nonexistent NPC.
>>
>>557831849
She had different dialogue if you talked to her while Cannock was dead iirc
Maybe t hat was added for the GBC version
>>
>>557832672
The "cursed Cannock" side quest wasn't in the original game, only the remakes.
>>
Its weird seeing people say that phys isnt good enough in DQ7R just because magic isnt shit for once during the midgame.
>>
Man, the cathedral of blight is hard as shit. I tried it out and got wrecked immediately by random npc's in the tower so I figured I might as well do nottagen first to gain some levels but even with that I'm still getting wrecked at the tower.
The difficulty spike is kind of crazy considering how easy the midgame was. I probably have to go out of my way to grind for the first time in this game
>>
>>557836465
DQ7R flatlines its difficulty between Kiefer leaving and Hubbleish to give players "breathing room" in case you have bad combinations. Once Trolls, Gigantes and so on become more common, (Aeolus/Vogograd) enemy damage and more importantly bulk really start to spike because they expect you to make synergistic teams instead of random bullshit.
>>
>>557836967
>because they expect you to make synergistic teams instead of random bullshit
Honestly that's probably where I'm going wrong. I managed to get this far using pretty much any vocation combo to grind them out while progressing through the story but I guess that time has come to an end
>>
>>557837706
Yeah, save unlocking the extra stuff for postgame.
>>
>>557836967
Not the same anon, but Cumulus Vex is definitely the point where 7R stops pulling punches. I only won the second tine through luck that he didn't Let Loose until near death. Now I'm at La Bravoure smacking slimes around for easy VP to get more jobs done, having already swept the cathedral once for treasure and dodging every battle because they're borderline bosses in themselves.

>Physical
Hero, Ruff and Aishe generally have access to the actually good physical gear. Prioritize good secondary effects (elemental damage, effective bonuses and increased crit over highest attack).
Hammerhood, Cyclops, Brownie, Troll Skeleton Swordsman and Great Sabercat are your best friends. HM to Bodkin Archer since that also works for them but physical fighters are spoiled for choice.
>Magic
Maribel, Ruff and Mervyn have access to the Duplic Hat and so are objectively better than Hero and Aishe as mages when it comes down to it regardless of what "stats" may say since you can just use seeds to fix any issues.
Bodkin Archer, Meowmagician, Clawcerer and Vis Mager are the main hearts for these guys. Its also very important to take advantage of weapon effects when using mages as its impossible to cover every weakness (Lightning Staff in particular does a lot of work).
Make sure that you unlock Armamentalist or Monster Master along the way to Druid since they carry some very useful tools.
>Support (not an exhaustive list)
Oomph(le) - Fisherman, Armamentalist, Luminary
MMight Up - Troubadour, Mage, Sage
Buff - Fisherman, Priest, Sage, Hero
Magic Barrier - Armamentalist
Sap - Mage, Sailor, Pirate
Spell Res Down - Troubadour
Ele Res Up - Troubadour
Ele Res Down - Armamentalist
Zing - Priest, Paladin, Sage, Hero
Forbearance - Paladin
Kerplunk - Paladin
>>
Gonna be on my way to wake up the Wind Spirit with a mage, a bard, and two clerics.
I don't remember if you have to fight her, but if so, I'm bout to get my ass handed to me.
>>
>>557853137
Any good party compositions yet? I was thinking of running something like:
>Hero/Champion x2 for damage
>Druid/Armamentalist for magic+support
>Luminary/Mage for pure support
>Champion/Paladin on backup for Kerpluck or replace support for more damage
Double Kabuff and double Oomph turn one, (Ka)Sap afterward, spam Sword Dance or Gigaslash. Druid doing magic damage and emergency Omniheal. Luminary can start passing their turn if they're done with (de)buffing or swap to backup.
>>
>>557860515
There's only 1 copy of the big monster hearts so trying to run 2x dps of the same damage type is a bit of a fools errand outside of Magic Burst memes which needs insane amount of seed farming.
>>
>>557861331
I mean, I imagine there has to be some overlap somewhere with five characters. Something that hasn't been clear to me in recent games: Do elemental slashes scale off both Strength and Magical Might? I always feel unsure what I should be buffing for things like Gigaslash.
>>
>>557861970
I think they're just based on your attack.
Gigaslash is weird cause in 2HD I noticed it didn't get boosted by Oomph
>>
>>557861970
>>557860515
>Physical DPS
Champion/X. Sabercat/Skeleton Swordsman using Multifists.
>Magical DPS
Armamentalist/X. Elementary with Duplic Hat should be the best they've got since Mage's Rage is a forced crit and Duplic can simulate the Twocus Effect. This one needs more testing but the X is most likely going to be Druid or MM depending on how the crit thing with Kazam vs Kafrizzle stacks up.
OR
Sage/Druid, worse damage than the above but more of a generalist that can double as a Magic Burst bomb due to having the highest overall MP before seed shenangians.
>Enablers
(Destiny) Dancer - Muscle Dance is equivalent to non Brownie Focus Strength
Troubadour - Mandatory for any magic based DPS on top of bringing defensive utility
Luminary - Pass the Torch is broken
Armamentalist - DJ is stupid when you account for elemental phys skills/weaponry due to property inheritance on top of it already helping out mages.
>Defensive Support
Druid (Omniheal), Hero (Kabuff, Kazing, Multiheal), Armamentalist (Magic Barrier), Paladin (Kerplunk panic button, Forbearance tank)
The hard part is just coming up with a combo based on what you're missing
>>557863691
Gigaslash, Splitters and IIRC BoUP have fixed damage ranges based off your strength or something. But weirdly enough Flame/Gust/Aqua/Lightning Slash scale off multipliers (but are worse than just using a property inheritance weapon skill as long as the weapon isnt vastly outclassed)
>>
>>557863914
Hm... Is there any reason to use Muscle Dance to boost an attack over Pass the Torch to just attack twice? Maybe MP consumption on your attacker, but does that really matter in a damage race?
>>
>>557864774
Why are you running Luminary/Dancer on the same person? You split them for higher overall damage.
>>
>>557865893
So what? One physical, one magical, two support?
>Champion/Hero
>Armamentalist/Druid
>Destiny's Dancer/Paladin
>Luminary/Troubadour
>whatever for backup
>>
At what level is it reasonable to fight the almighty in 7R
>>
>>557863914
Is Multifists better than Swords Dance for DPS?
>>
>>557874631
Apparently Skeleton Soldier pushes it over the edge.
>>

Champion/X
Paladin/X
Luminary/X
Armamentalist/X
Filler. Eg Mage/Dancer for Sap/Muscle Dance if no one is covering Def Down.

>>
>Going into the final boss without Omniheal
Hmm, this'll be interesting. Fortunately, T2/T3 vocations are generally sidegrades, so I should be fine with a bit of optimization.

Might end up running
Paladin/Armamentalist
Champion/Gladiator
Sage/Mage
Luminary/Troubadour
And a back up Paladin.

If I had actually bothered fighting all of the trash, it would be a different story lol.

Almost finished with DQ7R. This will be the 4th DQ I've played within 6 months and I had a lot of fun with it. I don't really like how they scaled vocation exp relative to the strength of some of the random encounters in the back half because after a while, it essentially turns randoms into things that you only fight for the sake of filling out the bestiary or getting drops like the Angel Leotard or the Hela stuff from Drakulards. If you actually want vocation exp, its way faster to just do a sweep across the world map while you're hunting down the Magic/Ultimate Key chests that you missed.
Maribel and Mervyn are my favorite characters, best island was probably Alltrades.

These patches are kinda lame to be honest because the skill progression in 7R is explicitly balanced around the idea that its a bunch of sidegrades.

>>
>>557932836
Now why can't somebody mod the 3DS version so jobs work like on PS1 (all skills permanent)?
>>
>>557932836
It may not be the most balanced, but the PS1 style is definitely the most fun to play with.
>>
>>557932836
How about a mod that only makes the skills of everybody default job permanent, like how the prior releases had everybody learn basic skills through normal level-ups before the Abbey opens up.
>>
I'm tired of grinding, can I beat the Dragonlord at lvl 17/18?
>>

>>
If I could retroactively tackle the vocation system of 7R, I'd give each vocation a cost and then would progressively give the player more slots to equip two or more vocations.

Example
Start the game with 1 vocation slot, end with 6 slots.
Base vocation costs 1 slot.
Intermediate costs 2.
Advanced costs 3.
>>
>>557941971
If they wanted to keep the Pick 2 system I think it would be better for the classes to also bring the skills from their prerequisites with them
But I guess that wouldn't really work with how Hero is unlocked
>>
>>557942598
They'd have to rework a number of skillsets, not just Hero alone because Priest for example has Midheal/Multiheal/Zing that are shared with Paladin.

Wow, a good chunk of the islands in this game are real fucking bummers.
>>
>>557942707
That was a change made for 7R since you wouldn't get to keep the skills unless you take Priest as your secondary.
Same for some of the other advanced jobs that got a few skills pulled forwards but not everything.

Good to know. I've only ever played 11 besides this one, and the only particularly sad bit that I remember was that whole mermaid thing.

>>557943738
Mermaid thing was a callback to the DQ2 mermaid town but yeah, might just be from the sheer volume of town stories but 7's got the most sad endings
>>
We now have people claiming 11 was referencing 2 when it was actually 2 HD referencing 11 because nobody ever plays the original version of anything

>>557944548
Gimme a break I played it when I was like 6

>>
>>557940104
You need to be like 19-21 bare minimum depending on your stats, which are determined by your name, strength being the most important one.
Your name gives you higher strength, so you should be able to do it at 19.

>Takeshi Ichikawa, Producer of Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined:
>"I was in the lower grades of elementary school when I first played the PlayStation version. I remember thinking at the very beginning, “When will the battles start?” and I don’t think I managed to clear the whole game back then.
>When I played it again as an adult, I was able to complete it successfully, and I found the dark world filled with irrationality especially striking and modern."

>>
I want to buy DQ 7, I have switch2.

>>
>>557951534
If anything the game reeks of being forced to release before it was finished to pad out an investor's report. Vogograd and the new Kiefer scenario makes it blatantly obvious.
>>
Its funny because people were saying that you could lose places like Greenthumb, El Ciclo and Grondal without losing anything meaningful from the overall narrative and now that they're cut, everyone's acting like its a huge affront to humanity.

This is why devs should never listen to fans.
>>
>>557952207
The Switch 1 version has some annoying hiccups on the overworld map. But that's if you're playing on the Switch 1.
I don't think many people have compared the performance of the Switch 2 version with the Switch 1 version while played on a Switch 2.
>>
>>557951827
anons' opinions on what is actually going on don't either
>>
>>557952851
You might be shocked to learn that the internet isn't one guy and people have different, conflicting opinions about things. There are parts of VII I've complained about but the solution is to make them better, not remove them and call the game fixed.
>>
>>557952569
The Kiefer bit is no more half-assed than the 3DS release where you go back to save him from getting killed by Cumulus Vex.
>>
One guy online called the childhood part of V slow so we have to get rid of it so players don't get bored. Enjoy!
>>
>>557953652
Slow ≠ pointless
>>
>>557953652
Everything in DQV is relevant and if anything they need to add content for the other girls.
DQ7 does vignette storylines but not all of them are actually directly connected or relevant to the core plot which is why 7R removed 3 and left 4 as optional.
>>
>>557953492
I just find it fucking hilarious how the prevailing narrative can change from the game desperately needs to excise stuff because its too long into I can't believe they cut stuff based on over 20 years of complaints all over the world.
>>
>>557953969
>not all of them are actually directly connected or relevant to the core plot
Greenthumb was supposed to show Kiefer what being a cuckold who doesn't pursue his love interest looks like. Just because the game doesn't beat you over the head with a complete lack of subtlety doesn't mean they aren't important. It was kept, but shuffling it until after his departure really defeats the point.
>>
>>557954737
Roamers ends with Florin leaving and a big Kiefer shaped hole for him to fill in the camp since he's obviously in love with Lala and he never actually wanted to become king anyway. Watching Carraway cuck himself over not wanting to "hurt people" is a useful support for the decision but not necessary to tell the full story.
>>
Isn't every DQ world supposed to have a Yggdrasil tree in it? Why would 7R remove what's meant to be a recurring fixture? Heck, where does all the Ygg leaves and dews come from without it now?
>>
Why can't Kiefer just use the portal to visit his family and friends once or twice a year?
>>
>>557956116
That might be technically true but it's usually a pretty minor element. Of all the things missing from 7R I'm not that broken up about it falling off the world tree checklist. I'm actually more annoyed that Yggdrasil in 2 HD didn't use the theme from 11.

Idunno, I think cutting content in a remake is terrible precedent to set. They could've improved upon it, made it optional, put in an alternative, etc., but instead they just outright removed it in a full price remake. This, on top of making the game easier overall with added guardrails, is basically giving a middle finger to fans who actually liked the original for what it was, all in the name of casualization.
Pic related was a "casualized" remake that
>made the hard difficulties actually hard
>incorporated the bonus content from the prior versions into the main campaign/post-game
>expanded heavily on a lot of areas (like the final dungeon which is now three thrice the size)
It was not without flaws, but overall it was well received by fans and newcomers alike. But DQ relies a lot on brand power and, much like Pokemon, can get away with a lot because of it, at least in Japan. It's just a shame that this kind of thing is becoming more acceptable now.

Is it due to the bonus effect of the wands? Or is it just the magic mending?

Yes.

The voice acting and visuals are a novelty, but the PS1 version is still the only one with all content by virtue of being the original. Honestly, I don't mind the casino not returning in future games. It gets boring after being pretty much the same thing in so many games. You just have to savescum until you win big. Nowadays I dread having to do the casino on playthroughs

Dragon Quest made me into a bit of a gambling addict, and got me interested in going to one irl, so having no more casinos really sucks for me.
I'd probably be going bankrupt irl at the casinos if Megami Tensei and Yakuza didn't have me covered, thankfully I got into those series recently.
>>
>>558034107
It should. The new E10 rating mentions simulated gambling.
>>
>>558034213
So a re-release of Pokémon can keep its casino but a remake of DQ can't?
>>
>>558034745
Maybe PEGI defaults to their old rating for rereleases? Or they don't give enough of a shit to edit it so they'll take the mature rating in Europe, only manchildren are gonna be buying it anyways.

The first game with a casino was 4, not to mention that 9 never had one.
>>
>>558034745
>>558035039
The game contains elements that encourage or teach gambling. These simulations of gambling refer to games of chance that are normally carried out in casinos or gambling halls. Games with this sort of content could previously be classified at PEGI 12 or PEGI 16.[7] As of 2020, all new games with such content, whether or not real-life currency is directly involved, are rated PEGI 18, although older games retain their existing classifications

>the substories look kind of "empty"... I remember for instance in DQVIII some substories were really beautiful. I played that game many years ago and still remember the story of the tiger that didnt accept death or in DQXI the mermaid story but on DQVII after 23 hours I find the substories not memorable at all (they are all basically the same: a town, a problem, solve the problem, next) or they just dont make much sense (the "egyptian" one, the "dragon" is missing, you travel to the future get a skull, back to the past, throw it in the water and voila! the dragon is back, does his thing and vanishes again). It is like a children book where things happen just because.
>People saying that this is how DQ games are have no idea... DQVIII and IX were ABSOLUTELY NOT like this.

Do you agree? Is DQ7 a hollow outlier from the rest of the series?
>>
>>558038379
>It is like a children book where things happen just because
>>
>>558038379
>Do you agree? Is DQ7 a hollow outlier from the rest of the series?
No. It's simply the culmination of what every DQ game before it did, and then DQ8 changed everything about how the franchise worked.
>>
>>558038379
I always found 7's substories to be more memorable than the other games.
1 and 2 had none basically before HD
3, 4, 6 and 8 I barely remember anything from
I remember nothing from 9
Did 5 even have substories?
Actually the only games with memorable substories for me are 7 and 11. Time will tell for 10. I'll probably forget the Erdrick Trilogy ones again when the remakes aren't so recent in my mind.
>>
>>558039298
Yeah, but 90% of DQ7 is substories.
If you don't remember them you may as well not remember the game.
>>
>>558039298
I feel like the first game that really started the sub story thing that DQ is known for is 4. Like yeah I know that 3 had the stuff with Kandar/Robbin 'Ood, but its the remakes that steadily fleshed that (and 1+2) out over time.
Aside from that some games are more main narrative focused and others are more sub story focused.
>>
>>558039298
9 is by far the most similar to 7 in terms of town stories (and the main plot barely mattering). Some of the early ones in 9 are really good, but later on it peters out a bit.

DQ6 is cursed and will never receive a remake without DQ4 and DQ5 receiving one first.
But 4 and 5 are much longer games than 1 and 2, so they aren't as easy to come by, and also by the virtue of being long games, most players will be burnt out of DQ by the time 6 gets its chance, just like last time.

The only dragon quest games that actually need remakes are 8 and 9. 8 so we can get all the content that the 3ds version added along with actually good graphics that it should've had and 9 so all the dlc dungeons are part of the base game and because that's the only one without a remake yet

That's what I assumed.
Time travel rules work whatever the way is more convenient.
When the hero time travels, other characters start having deja vu about events that happened on the other timeline, clearly implying the timeline was merged into one.
But when Serenica does it, she just creates a new timeline so she doesn't erase the hero.

Maybe it's related to the sword of light breaking?
>>

Yeah, around 90 hours is pretty normal for DQVII PS1 just focusing on the main story with some padding from party talk and item collecting. Getting all the Immigrant Town variants to buy everyone's best equipment is a bit of chore, though. You can skip the Cathedral variant since it doesn't have anything useful. By the time you do all that and clear the bonus dungeons, you'll probably be around 110 hours depending on any miscellaneous grinding you want to do.

You generally spend more MP in newer games which is why mp restoratives and healing points are more common than in the older days.
For example, Kafrizzle in 7R might as well be 80MP since your primary mage is going to be using the 1.5x spell cost heart. That shit is simply not sustainable without additional support and its even worse if you're damage racing and can't use the mp reduction hat.

The numbers tricked me.
I kept Serena benched for most of the game because I though her utility wasn't quite good enough, then it turns out she had the most powerful debuff. And it works for both spells and physical-elemental.

whats different about the way you acquire tablet fragments compared to the original psx version of dq7? it feels kind of awkward being lead around the map by !'s to talk to npcs to receive a fragment, was it just mindlessly wandering around until you luck into the npc who gives you a fragment?

When they remake 5 I hope they lean into the wives and kids being different in gameplay.
>Bianca, Mage+Armamentalist with whips
>Nera, Sage
>Debora, Martial Artist+Luminary+Mage with her special claw weapons
For the kids they're Hero and a Mage but they could change stats and alter their spell, skill and equipment sets based on the mother.
Bianca being baseline and Nera giving them more spells and less strength, maybe make Daughter into a Mage with some Priest skills. Debora boosts Strength and Agility but limits their spell selection but gives some physical skills like Falcon Slash to the daughter or maybe Hustle Dance instead of Multi and Omniheal for the Son.

That would also incentivize using different monsters to fill the gaps left by the more specialized wife and child characters. So if your wife is Debora you lack proper healers so you pick up a healer monster or more melee monsters if you chose Debora.

Pic unrelated
>>
>new evangelion tv anime before dragon quest 12
>>
>>558252094
It's more the fact that they both conveniently vanish from the party completely so the game doesn't have to redo any cutscenes to include them. The whole scenario on the prison island is the biggest example; Red and Morrie are written out as taking over the ship to avoid it being sunk while the main four are trapped.
>>
>>558315379
The 3DS version gave you a sensor on the bottom screen that glowed when an area had a shard and flashed when you were in its hiding spot.
>>
>>558319196
>some more tedious segments/islands were made optional
Some islands were made optional and some were cut outright. The only objective was to make the game shorter without interfering with major story events, not removing "bad" content. They also made QoL changes like cutting a bunch of monster types so they didn't have to animate them.
>how much critique regarding it is just "MUH HECKIN CENSORSHIPERINO!!!!" or "THIS <extremely minor detail that only diagnosed spergs care about> ISN'T THE EXACT SAME AS THE ORIGINAL!!!"

>cutting a bunch of monster types so they didn't have to animate them.
I'm also wondering if part of it is purging as many non-Toriyama designs as possible out of worship for him.
>>
>>558340450
Nah 7 just had a bunch of shit they couldn't lift from 11 or Monsters 3. Some might be that they were only on islands that were cut but there's others that were part of story events that got changed to other existing monsters.
Although some things were left out anyways weirdly that did have recent-ish 3D models.
>>
>>558332175
>Bianca being baseline and Nera giving them more spells and less strength
Funny you say that, because ever since the DS remake, Nera's stats were rebalanced to be way more physical and less magical.
Her strength cap at 220, same as Debora. She just can't use Debora's Akillics.
It feels a bit awkward, yes, I also wouldn't assume she's good at punching by her character design.
>>
>>558332175
I'd want the brides to be differentiated, but they should keep all of the spells they already have and just be given more abilities and spells beyond those. I think II HD had the right attitude to expanding the characters' abilities while still keeping them on-theme. I basically agree with those directions for the brides, with Bianca as a rugged Armamentalist with Ranger characteristics, Nera as a Sage/Druid type with some of the odder spells like Summon, and Debora with some Martial Artist abilities but also Merchant and Gadabout ones.
>they could change stats and alter their spell, skill and equipment sets based on the mother.
This one I'm not so sure about. Maybe have them pick up some abilities in events after you rescue your wife, but I don't think the differences should be too drastic. Making your party more one-note would be a mistake.
One thing I would fundamentally change is giving Omniheal to Fiveo instead of Parry (he should also get Whipping Boy and Forbearance for obvious reasons). Late in the story dad should be the support character and the legendary hero should be dealing the deathblow to the demon king instead of being stuck on healslut duty.
>>558341793
I never knew. Nera as a late-blooming Paladin would be pretty funny.
>>
>>558340928
It's still interesting that most of the replacement monsters originated from the Erdrick trilogy.
>>
>>558340450
Is there evidence that any of VII's monsters weren't designed by him?
>>
>>558315379
Fragments were always in chests or lying on the ground, sometimes a story NPC gives one to you.
After you clear the robot island, in the present where their hideout used to be there's a fortune teller standing around the entrance, and if you get your fortune told by her, she gives you a pretty solid hint on what town or dungeon the shard you're missing is in, she'll even specify if its in the present or not, and she says that if the place doesn't ring a bell at all to you, it's likely a location you haven't been to yet, aka you've got everything so far.

Uh...
Is the Prince of Midenhall a reincarnation of the luminary now?
I was ok with Erdrick being also a reincarnation of Erdwin, given all the parallels, but the heroes of DQ1 and 2 felt distinct enough.
>>
>>558351351
>Prince of Midenhall a reincarnation of the luminary
>Erdrick being also a reincarnation of Erdwin
Neither of those is even really implied.
>>
>>558353065
They're physically identical, I'd say it's implied.
Not confirmed, just implied.
>>
>>558353545
Eleven was explicitly a reincarnation of Erdwin and the two things we know about that are 1. he isn't physically identical to Erdwin, and 2. he has the same hand emblem, which none of the original trilogy heroes seem to have. In XI the reincarnation thing is very explicit, but even though the HD-2D games add quite a few connections to XI and to each other reincarnation just doesn't come up.
>>
>>558340928
>>558340450
The funny part is them skipping an entire part of Nottagen and it feels weirdly paced that you beat a bathtub jobber to a plant monster and then some worms.
>>
>>558355829
Anon. I said it's implied.
You can argue about it being canon or not all you want, I'm not saying you're right or wrong.
But you can't deny it's implied. You don't just draw the exact same character and then say they're not related whatsoever.
>>
>>558357530
I'm saying I don't think it is implied. Obviously Erdwin is an out-of-universe reference to the DQIII hero and his party to a typical DQIII party, but that's really it. There's no indication that III's hero has the mark, the original Yggdrasil that seems to be connected to the reincarnation doesn't exist anymore, and the only connection between heroes that the HD-2D games care about is bloodline (and it's basically impossible that Erdwin and Eleven were blood related).
>>
>>558358526
>Erdwin is an out-of-universe reference to the DQIII hero
It's the same universe.

>the original Yggdrasil that seems to be connected to the reincarnation doesn't exist anymore
The original Yggdrasil that gave the hero his mark doesn't exist anymore, huh?
Wouldn't that explain why the new heroes don't have a mark anymore?
>>

>>
>>558359145
>The reason Erdwin looks like Erdrick is so (You) point and clap.
So you're bringing meta arguments to the topic.
This would go against your point of Eleven looking different from Erdwin because of an in-universe reason.
The truth is that he only looks different because the devs wouldn't want Eleven himself looking like Erdrick, as this would be a spoiler from the very start.
>>
>>558359780
I recommend getting into Pokemon if you just can't get enough low effort remakes and cut content.
>>
>>558359906
>This would go against your point of Eleven looking different from Erdwin because of an in-universe reason.
I'm saying it's irrelevant. If you can be reincarnated and look totally different (not just Eleven, but Serena and Veronica also look nothing like Serenica) then appearance isn't a factor either way. Erdwin and his party are a reference to a typical DQIII party for the audience's benefit, that's all.
>The truth is that he only looks different because the devs wouldn't want Eleven himself looking like Erdrick, as this would be a spoiler from the very start.
That seems to have just been Toriyama's decision. The original design sketch was most similar to the hero from V, but he still had spiky hair, and it was Toriyama who took it in a totally different direction. It wouldn't be much of a spoiler either way though, since Amber tells you you're the hero's reincarnation about 10 minutes into the game. Plus Toriyama's characters just tend to look similar. It's just not a major factor.

So what's the verdickt on VIIR? How severe are the cuts? How major are the changes/additions?
>>
>>558483985
Cuts are significant and sloppy, and don't really improve the game except by making it technically shorter
Story additions are minimal, old Keef was way overhyped
Gameplay additions are a mixed bag but the basic job and battle system changes are pretty good
>>
>>558484520
So its pretty much just pure "streamlining"?
Of all the possible things to add kiefer reunion is literally last on the list of what I'd want, the finality of his departure is possibly the most memorable part of VII, undercutting that is retarded.
They also cut down the amount of time Maribel leaves right?
>>
>>558485423
The Kiefer return isn't even worth it. I shit you not, his "side story" is 10 minutes long. Then he leaves you and then just pops up as a npc party member for the final dungeon and then leaves afterwards with a half assed goodybye. Its utter trash.

What really frustrated me about the game is all the wasted potential. The combat is genuinely good, being able to input commands as attacks plays out feels great. The visuals are charming and really fit (imo at least). But it's mired in all the cuts, simplifying and general casualfying of the game. Oh and the UI is fucking atrocious

I always thought Hendrick's skill tree mirrored Sylvando's as a reference that they were trained by the same man.
Now I'm 50/50 about it being intentional or just a coincidence.
>>
Just finishing up Alltrades in VIIR, I'm (mostly) impressed with the how they've designed the initial skill sets.
>Hero
More fleshed out support than just Upper and heal. Maribel lost sap so he can get Oomph, Aqua Slash supports Kiefer's lightning, Coral Grief softens up all enemies, and two invulnerability moves with Hornbuckle letting you get your limit break faster.
>Kiefer
Loses his tanking skill, but gets more versatility as the physical attacker. Lighting Slash covers a different element, a multi-hitting attack, big expensive non-elemental attack, three ways to buff his power, and a debuff through Helm Splitter.
>Marismell
Stayed as the offensive spell and ailment user, but gets a wider range of elements and target types. Her limit break ignores element resistances, so you can just hit with your highest damage or widest target. I think she gained Fuddle and lost her sleep spell, but you get the Snooze Stick.
>Gabo
Disappointing because his moveset is kind of the same, he gets notably fewer skills than everyone else. Nap isn't necessary since Hero is such a good support. I wish he got a crit boosting move or something that plays better into his role. His limit break was at least helpful during Alltrades.

I imagine it's the same as or similar to XI. Yellow at half health, Orange at quarter health.
Although, XI also had a red color for roughly 10% health left, but I haven't seen that in the HD games.

Did you also have the Draconian rule to not be able to get exp from lower lvl monsters? If so how did you reach that lvl I’m at 56-57 I can only really gain exp from farming metal slimes at this point
>>
>>558705801
No, I didn't bother with the exp rule cause it seemed really pointless to me to combine that with stronger monsters. I was only ever grinding metal slimes whenever I got rolled anyways, so the exp rule literally would have done nothing but make my grind sessions take longer.

yeah I'm trying to do prep for optimization (finding any remaining glowing spot seeds and HOLY SHIT I wish the map marked off the overworld secret areas once you've exhausted everything in them. I can't remember if I've visited them all or not.

I have 105 mini medals, so only the exotoga is left. I do have a question about that, are the 5 remaining medals accessible now or are they in the dungeon you can wish for (temple of trials) ? knowing the answer now will save me some time fucking about looking for mini medals I can't find.

Also if you've classed someone into a sage, and then class them away, do you still need words of wisdom to get them to be a sage or does the game remember you had them as a sage once before?
I guess not, but I suppose it might be trivial by comparison to get them to level 20 as a gadabout and then into a sage again.

If you liked Reimagined, the HD2D remakes are similar in design philosophy, and a fine way to experience the original trilogy. If you didn't, consider playing the original trilogy on NES/SNES/GBC (Doesn't really matter which), may as well go sequential if you're willing to dig into the rest of the franchise.

Ok that's a huge improvement mostly down to using monster pile on.
So now I should probably start thinking about my first wish. There's the obvious story related one to do wishing ortega back but I want to do the other wishes too, and I know the more wishes you do the less turns you get on Xenlon.
So, arguably the best wish for optimizing killing xenlon should be the rubiss sword, the extra dungeon or the arena right?
If i equip the rubiss sword on my martial artist does it lower their attack or is this a destructiball situation? Because then i could make her shit out damage with multifists to really go nuts. Or i put it on hero and have him use it to kazap every turn, while having omniheal as an emergency button.
Any recs?

I think 11's lack of cel shading is what makes it look so distinct visually. yeah extra duplic-hat will be a huge game-changer, it probably makes it such temple of trials SHOULD be your first wish. Also as annoying as the weapon restricted areas are, if you have padfoot and fade you can run from most fights and get the extra gear which is a big help.
My next plan is to change my sage (originally gadabout) (level 54 ish) into a monster wrangler for wildside, my monster wrangler > thief > priest into a warrior, temporarily anyway maybe not forever, and eventually them into sage perhaps later.
And my martial artist to a monster wrangler for wild side.
>>
>>558879930
>monster wrangler > thief > priest into a warrior
Did they change the reclass mechanism in the remake?
I only did it once in the original game, and in some cases it barely felt worth the effort.
>>
>>558883679
you can reclass someone if they're at level 20
if you're turning them into a sage you need words of wisdom, unless they are a gadabout in which case all you need is the gadabout at level 20.

I don't know the exact specifics but they made the stat hit you take a lot less punishing, I think you keep half your stats? And then of course you will get stat growth after the level reset when they gain levels. Basically it means reclassing them is an easier decision to make than before.
>>
>>558884008
Pretty sure the stats work the same as previous versions but more moves existing gives more incentive to reclassing
>>
>>558884008
You always kept half your stats, though I think it's more like keeping 55-60% now. Also, stats from seeds are now always kept in full.
>>
>>558884008
That's already how it worked back then.
>>
Back then warriors and martial artists didn't earn any MP, so mixing them with magical vocations was disappointing.
Also they didn't learn any abilities, so there wasn't any point in mixing physical with physical either, you couldn't even profit from the carried stats because the 255 points cap meant you didn't need to reclass to hit max stats.
>>
>ado face reveal before dragon quest 12
>>
>>558884769
Warriors and Martial Artists never gained MP from leveling but they still kept half if they were a caster before.
So going from a Mage/Priest until you got the spells you wanted then changing to Warrior worked perfectly fine to add a bit of utility. Hardly necessary though.

Priest into warrior kinda works.
Mage into warrior sucks. Mages just don't offer enough support in DQ3, you're trading a damage dealer for another damage dealer, but they're on the opposite side of the spectrum, so now you just have a warrior with mediocre magic that would rather attack anyway.

have a monster wrangler that you can class into thief (maybe after he gets animal instinct and monster pile on, attack attacker is also good).
This will give you insane utility out of combat, animal instinct/nose for treasure and snoop (thief spell) will save you a lot of trouble. Thieves also get hypnowhip eventually which is nice.
I don't think it matters that much what you reclass the thief into, the best skills are tied up in utility for negligible mp cost.

>>558951234
Ok, I've got all 121 monsters so I am doing the maximum I can barring randomness meaning its 3 hits or 5 hits. I'm not sure how else to optimize. I could get rid of hero but omniheal is very important.
Anyone know the stat that strength caps attack damage? Actually knowing any of the stat hardcaps (i know the actual hard cap on every stat is 999 but I mean the stat cap on influencing attack damage, which I think is lower than the hard cap).

Thanks everyone.

LETS GOOOOOOOO
Going to stop blogposting the Xenlon fight now. Thanks for the help everyone. This is a very comfortable margin for farming wins off him so I'm going to clean him out then maybe move on to Grand Dragon

The key in my opinion is not to use monster pile on too much on party members that have multi-fists or sword dance. You want to use those abilities early along with hero using a war drum because that'll mean you will get damage roughly comparable to a maxxed out monster pile on but also with the potential for crits. The problem with monster pile on is it cannot crit, but the main benefit of it is that it is not affected at all by being dazzled, and Xenlon will definitely dazzle after the mid point of the fight. I also put the sunstone on my hero to dispel sleep, and if he gets sleeped its not such a big deal because he usually wakes up in time to do a clutch omniheal.

tl;dr wild side on as much as possible multifists and sword dance early in fight before he starts using sandstorm, after sandstorm keep using wildside and monster pile on
>>

>>
>>558956280
It's influenced by rouge, but yeah Torneko was the first of that specific kind.
>>
>>558964979
Good work anon. Merchants Call-to-arms is a good way to shred Xenlon. It scales with level so it's a bit excessive cuz at 99 most set ups will just flatten him.

I personally enjoy Sword Dance/Multifist+Omph(wardrum)+Egg on and someone using Sap. Can get real big numbers, but obviously you gotta be aware of turn 5 when Xenlon removes all buffs.
>>
>>558967638
yeah the thing is i could my sage > monster wrangler to cast sap, but I don't know how much damage I might lose on that compared to using them to go wild side into monster pile on immediately. I'll do some testing when I have some time.
Is there a weapon/item when used that causes sap on the enemy? I could give that to hero but I like using war drum + falcon blade + falcon slash on hero in the few turns I don't need to cast omniheal. But it might be useful in the offchance hero gets dazzled but my warrior and MA > Monster wrangler are not.

Honestly at this point damage optimization isn't to secure the win against Xenlon, I've done 15 turns or less three times in a row now. Now it's for Grand Dragon
Now putting people into merchant might be really funny... I'll keep that in mind for later.
Also is there anything I can spend gold on? I managed to hit cap without even trying too hard thanks to the monster arena. I don't suppose there's a secret seed merchant somewhere? I have enough elfin elixirs too.
>>
>>558968382
The Orochi sword.

All that spare money is just good for Call-to-arms spam at this point in the game mate.
>>
>>558968760
oh I'm a fucking idiot of course the Orochi sword, I really felt like 'hmm did I get something that lets me sap?' and I forgot the guaranteed drop item.
Thanks, that'll help optimise a bit.
Oh call to arms costs gold? ok yeah then that means gold still has a (limited) use.
I haven't gotten as far in other DQ post-games as this before, do other DQ's have post-games where gold actually matters or has that been a perennial issue?
One thing I've noticed about the DQ3 HD remake is I think they didn't want to change the structure of the game too much, which honestly I think limited it a bit in some ways. Like, Xenlon is still just a palette swap and honestly his sprite kind of looks muddy because it got blown up to be bigger (I assume). And Grand Dragon is literally just a shiny gold orochi. I wonder if they wanted to make some visual changes but got cold feet about going too far with it with the actual bosses and enemies.
I mean look at Temple of Trials, it's different to the ice cave right and uses its own unique tileset/visuals.

I do actually really like this game, hence me doing post game, I'm just trying to take a balanced view of it.

>>
>>558974257
It started with DQ9.
The game has secret vocations, but they aren't meant to straight out replace the base vocations, so mages can still a few things that sages can't, though it isn't worth it, if you ask me.
It's not quite the same as 7R, where advanced vocations are clearly meant to be superior, but there's maybe one or two skills of the base vocation that you still want, so you use it as secondary.
IMO a game with DQ9 balancing (all vocations are roughly equals) with 7R mechanisms (can use 2 and only 2 vocations) would be the ideal.
>>
>>558983963
Be nice if 9 let you share magic between jobs like it does for skills.
>>
>Monster Pile-On caps at 360~900 damage

Then you have to account for Channel Anger, Spooky Aura and the damage bonus when using it on a single enemy.
>>
>>558983963
>all vocations are roughly equals
I think 7R handled this a bit better because 9 absolutely does devolve into physical spam being way better than spells after a while.
>>
>>558990394
Well, you can get equippable items that let you transfer physical skills to any other job, but spells are locked only to spellcaster jobs. It's simply an inevitability.

But we'll see! I'm sure I'll like it a lot.
I have actually played 1 2 and 3 on SNES emulated, so that'll be a fun thing to go back to.
Dragon Quest 3 though was one of my very first games on gameboy colour way back in the day. I don't think I ever got farther than the boss of the first tower haha, but the game always stuck in mind for the freedom and the party creation. It's such a neat little game.

One nice thing about 1&2 HD is that they both borrow monsters from across the trilogy and have a bunch of new bosses (even 1 adds more than 3 did and 2 has tons) so even though the party customization aspect from 3 is mostly missing you still get a lot of toys to play with. I've got my issues with the remakes but 2 is undeniably a lot of fun to play.

Release Kaboom was 160 x 1.3 vs single targets
August Patch Kaboom is ~208 x 1.3 vs single targets
Monster Pile On also took a hit.
Duplic Hat is a best in slot for mages and available at a reasonable enough time that you can use it for like the entire last third or so of 3HD.
Realistically speaking, someone else is going to be handling Spooky Aura/Sap duty, not the main attacker.
The actual issue plaguing magical damage in HD games is that Channel Anger takes too long to unlock for no reason but they still do reasonably well as long as you're like consistently at +30 Wisdom above your base which is trivial as a Wit/Vamp or you feed seeds in 1/2 HD.

Dont forget that spells can do weakness damage that pile on cant do. Everything loses to Persecutter/Cutting Edge though

Can Cutting Edge crit in DQ3?
I want to have it on a Martial Artist with a 10+ critical multiplier, but Cutting Edge couldn't crit in DQ11, and now I'm afraid of doing all the work for nothing.

IIRC Cutting Edge can crit in 2/3 HD. Falcon Blade works on it in 2 but not 3.

I love XI monster animations. Now that I'm playing with stronger monsters, I think boomerangs look really good for Erik, but I also want Divide and Dual-Wield.
>>
>>559037943
It may not be very efficient, but damn if Erik dual-wielding Falcon Blades isn't awesome. I forget if he can triple it with Divide.

Boomerangs early and for like two annoying group boss fights in act 3
Swords or knives for everything else
Respeccing is cheap anyways

Did 7R give Maribel boomerangs like Heroes 2?

Why did they make all the Chapter 2 characters the best party members in 4 DS? Besides Psaro

soulslike remake of dq1

No. Seems like they only defied her canon weapon choice so she wouldn't compete with Jessica (since Heroes is all about 8 and 4 getting the most love).
>>
>>559082998
I think they just needed to give someone boomerangs since the boomerang character from 1 was one of the OCs
>>
>>559082998
Lame. Maribel with boomerangs and Bianca with bows were both a lot more interesting than the same old mage girl staves and whips.

Almost done with III (SNES). Last castle now. Incredible game. Only I and II left after this… so, what version would >you rec? Or should it be the HD remakes? Haven’t touched my Switch in over 2 years lol
>>
>>559125803
I&II on GBC is extremely cute. The SNES versions are fine but kind of ugly. The HD-2D remakes are pretty good but really different, it's better to play the real thing first.
>>
>>559125803
2 Remake is really good but its basically a different game
