Repostan from previous thread. Do we know for sure if the FCU existed at the time of AC2/AHL? Even in AHL it's never namedropped, hell I think the only countries that are explicitly named are Yuktobania and Osea.

I wonder what the upside-down FCU flag in the trailer means. Is it like a Philippines scenario where the upside down flag is the wartime flag?

Also interesting that the FCU shares the 7 star motif with Erusea.
>>
>>
>>
Basically Cross Rumble's explanation of AC2 plot is:
>Erusea and North Point want a continent-wide federation to resist Osea and Yuktobania's new dominance after the Belkan War
>FCU core states in the south prefer an alliance with Osea and sabotage the treaty negotiation
>North Point orchestrates a series of military coups in the southern states to force them to sign the treaty
>FCU government and Osean-allied forces work with Scarface squadron to suppress the coup

One of the briefings in AHL refers to Albireo Squadron being from the Erusean Republic, which means the monarchy got ditched prior to AC2/AHL. The exact point of the change is not mentioned anywhere iirc, but Mihaly joined the Erusean Air Force while it was still a monarchy.
Albireo is also mentioned as being 'the strongest of the Allied Forces', the games starts with the Allies holed up in Erusean territory, and Mission 3 states that Anchorhead (an Erusean city) was a crucial Allied port before being occupied, which means Erusea was/is on the side on the Allies during AHL.
>>
Looking at the timeline in Aces at War 2019, they did a pretty good job retconning everything to fit in place all things considered. 1 and 2 are a little kludged into place but integrating events that occured before Strangereal as a concept truly existed isn't the easiest thing.
>>558406764
Which I find very strange. Supposedly at one point Usea was an acronym for United States of EuroAsia, maybe just a reference to that?
>>558411791
I guess Mihaly taught Albireo their bullshit maneuvers. Also Anchorhead cannot catch a fucking break can it? I wonder if we'll sink a fleet in their harbor for the third time.

<<CLIMB, NUGGETS, GO GO GO!>>
For some reason I've been using videos about airplane crashes recently as background noise and honestly it helped explain why that was such a big deal for the rookie pilots to do. Sudden changes in altitude does weird things to your mind and can make you lose track of your surroundings, even in clear skies.

What is your guys headcanon for each player characters intermediary plane(s)? Like after the starter but before the final "canon" plane.
I like to imagine Mobius 1 flies the Eurofighter
>>
>>558424454
Isn't the F-18 a "canon" plane for Mobius One thanks to some official art? With how easy the S-Rank requirements are in the PS2 games I don't think intermediate planes are necessary. In my heart of hearts Mobius flies anything and everything like in Nassault's animations, but Wardog styles on the Yukes solely in F-5s up until they had to be reborn into F-14s, and Cipher either hangs out in his Draken until the second B7R mission or he just had the F-15 the entire time.
That said I fully think Trigger switched planes every time he changed squadrons, so F-16 -> weird junk Avril got running -> F-15 -> F-22. And then he and Avril pilot their privately owned his and her F-104s because Osea is a beautiful country where civilians own anti-tank rifles and milsurp scrapyard warplanes.
>>
>>558424454
Trigger's obvious with the Eagle, but I like to think he flies a Hornet during mission 3 and 4 so the Harling things makes a little more sense to me. During his time in Spare, I like to think he gets whatever they have ready to fly and gets an A-10 for Long Day and Pipeline Destruction. When I replayed recently, I did a couple missions where Wardog flew F-20s and X-29s depending on mission so that's what I imagine before they get their F-14s. Zero I just imagine Cipher going straight from his Draken to an Eagle about halfway through the game. Plane Jesus flying a Euorfighter makes a lot of sense honestly since some Mobius pilots in the final mission have them. I'll have to try that when I replay 4. X I'm thinking Gryphus One uses the Apalis before getting his Raptor, because it's pretty middle of the road as far as the superplanes go.
I don't have any thoughts for the rest of AC, but for Project Wingman I think of Monarch going Phantom/Tomcat/two seater Chimera, with the Frogfoot used for A2G missions.
>>
>>
>>558425882
I've seen theories that Trigger had a MiG-21 or F-104 in Spare because you unlock them in that point of the game, but I've also seen a theory I'm personally partial to that Trigger kept his F-16 from Mage somehow since the Spare Skin retains his emblem and Fort Grays markings.

I'm bummed that AHL doesn't have a Flanker-E, or that the Terminator in game doesn't have the Ace Combat 2 camo scheme. But the Terminator is so much fun in that game with the cartoon physics flight model.

A thought
With Zero being the preorder bonus do you think they'll do a bit more and all the skins from zero are in 8's base game.If the plane doesn't appear then something close would get those skins. Like say Draken's skins are given to Gripen for instance.
>>
>>558484880
At the very least I would expect that we's get all the squadron skins for their respective planes, which means things like the F-15S and the F-16XL are probably base game planes, in addition to the skins for Cipher, Pixy, and PJ. Them doing all the Ace Style skins would be cool though.

Haven't played multiplayer since I finished grinding achievements, but playing meme builds against tryhards is fun. Mirage (and a lot of other 120 HP planes) with Bulletproof Fuel Tanks has the bulk and maneuverability to eat a few tryhard hits while also maneuvering for good hits on the enemy. Or drop down even further jnto Mig-21 territory and be an old bumblebee in the superplane world.

The Navy already had several B3 in service and wasn't going to use the CFT when the DLC came out and PA didn't remove them then I don't see why they would now. It helps the plane stand out in the game compared to the normal super bug.

Boeing is still offering it to export customers of Block III. Most of its problems with the USN was related to carrier operation, so it's not unfeasible the other carrierless operators of Superbug might acquire them. None have opted for it so far, but the option is there.

Everything in aircraft design is a concession. If the F-35 has a curved spot, it's likely the benefits of making it curved outweighed the potential increase in RCS. The DSI's are probably the most notable example. The humps *have* to be rounded, it's just how they work.
I also remember reading that some curved parts are actually made wholly of radar absorbing material and underneath them is an angled structure that reflects whatever isn't neutralised, mainly on the belly. Not sure how true that is though.

>>558540079
They're not inherently bad for stealth. Rather, the shape is determined through computer simulations, and the more powerful the computer, the more polygons it can handle. The F-117 was devoid of curves (even the airfoil!) simply because the computers of the time weren't powerful enough.

>>
>>
>>
>>558543054
For 3 exclusively I'd say there's a benefit, just as the FMVs are 240p and will not look good highly upscaled and would likely benefit from the CRT lines.
Otherwise I'll be honest I played AC4 with a CRT filter to make the UI look a bit sharper and didn't bother with AC5 or ACZ.
>>
>>558543054
Well the PS2 has deinterlacing hacks for all three games so besides some of the 2D UI elements which maybe could look better on CRT, I don't think there is much benefit to playing it on a CRT. This is assuming you're using emulators of course.

These Ace Combat 4 trial missions are making me rethink my entire life. The first time I played it I ignored it completely, now that I've S ranked every mission I was giving them a god, and I just cannot get S rank on the first mission, it's too hard, I'm trying to copy what a guy who got S rank on youtube did, with the F-22 and the PGB, but I've only managed to get A rank. I'm getting really humbled by this.

At least Schroeder seemed to realize in the end how stupid all of it was. He didn't seem actively malicious in the same way the Grey Men were, more like he was running on momentum because making weapons was literally all he knew how to do. Like Belka still exists but he talks about it as if it was outright destroyed. Given his age I would think he probably just started working in the Belkan arms industry when the war ended and got snapped up by Grunder. I genuinely don't think he ever considered the morality or practicality of what he was doing to begin with.
Speaking of Grunder how in the fuck were they not dismantled at the end of the Circum-Pacific War? They never stopped stirring shit even after they got their shit pushed in and even considering the secrect surrounding that war it's ridiculous. Was Harling not able to fully remove the warmongering element of the Osean government when he was restored to power or did Grunder just make up too much of Osea's MIC to fully dismantle?

What kind of country is the Republic of Sotoa?
The Republic of Sotoa is a nation located in the western part of the Belusa Continent, separated by the outer ocean to the east of the Yujia Continent. It features a diverse range of environments, including dry grasslands, mountainous regions, deserts, and oasis zones. In ancient times, it was established as a chieftain federation by multiple nomadic tribes. It transitioned to a republic through rapid modernization in the 20th century, but even now, longstanding powerful clans maintain strong influence over politics and the military. Having modernized its military forces through contemporary wars, it is a country currently facing challenges from desertification and water resource issues. Peep!

You know if there's one thing I wish they actually kept fron Assault Horizon/ it's the plane destruction. I think they kept it in Infinity since Infinity reused basically all of AH's model, but in 7 it seems like the aircraft all just have one damaged state they always go into with no variation.
>>
>>558754489
You might be in luck, AC8 is apparently implementing a newly-patented physics system that takes into account the state of a crashing aircraft and its parts when calculating its trajectory, including the possibility of ground destruction as a result.
>>
>>558757972
I do remember seeing them mention the physics in an interview, yeah, it's got me hopeful honestly. Especially after you get stuck in a protracted dogfight for a while seeing the enemy plane fall apart based on how you damaged it would make it even more satisfying. And seeing pilots bail out would be pretty cool too, I noticed some parachutes after downing fighters in Project Wingman. Stuff like this isn't required but they're little touches that make the games more immersive and cool.

There's a difference between the insurgent with a HMG on a pick-up and a state with actual SAMs and an air force, even if it may have been mauled in the past months. The houthis actually managed to threaten two F-16s and shot down a number of Reapers.
Do not underestimate an opponent just because he has a different skin colour.

Huh. Also seems like Griswall was the name of Aurelia at this point in time. I checked my copy of Aces at War as well and the Verusan Continent map is practically unchanged as well. It has been almost two decades in universe since AC5, maybe some of those smaller countries joined up with Yuktobania like a lot of smaller Usean states joines the FCU.

It’s possible, and idk why I’m using images of maps from AC5 briefings when I have my own copy of Aces at War as well for a more updated map oops glad to know you confirmed it legit hasn’t changed at all over there though. I still find it interesting they came up with a lore reason the Anean countries aren’t named in AC5 cause they also tried to form a union which fell apart. I wonder how they felt about the Circum-Pacific War reaching their waters in the Razgriz Straits

I feel like they're gonna aim for a summer release to get ahead of GTA6.
GTA6 and the inevitable GTAO2 is gonna suck up all the oxygen for games in a two month window around its release.
Recent Kono-posts indicate the game is content complete and in QA/polishing, and the recent trend of background lore posts from all official Ace Combat social media accounts means we're getting the ramp up for the promotional period right now. If it was slated for a December release, I feel like they would still be keeping total radio silence.

I only feel sad because I was hoping at least one of their Tomcast of Theseus would wind up in a museum to gawk at. I don't feel bad about all the Flankers or Fulcrums that have been shot down in Ukraine, or the Rafales India lost. The latter case gives me a roundabout way of making fun of the French so I find it funny more than anything. Unless a plane is very rare/1 of 1 or it gets destroyed in an air show crash like that P-63 crashing into a B-17 a couple years ago it's whatever.

>I've never understood why Iran was the only other country to get Tomcats personally. What made them so special?
Nobody else wanted them and had the cash to pay for them. As iconic as the Tomcat was it was also a maintenance nightmare.
Why bother with that when you can just have F-16s or Mig-29s(depending on which side of the cold war you were on).

They wanted them. They were given an option between the F-14 and F-15, and they went with the Cats.
>>
>>
>>558902908
That's true.
>>558902984
Huh. Maybe they just thought the Tomcat looked cooler.
>>558903327
Apparently they wanted an interceptor because the MiG-25 spooked them.
>>
>>558903327
No idea honestly. There's some speculation that they preferred the F-14s radar to the F-15 for a pure intercept role against the russkies constantly flying over the airspace.
If you're conspiratorial you could claim that the US pushed them toward the F-14, a very maintenance heavy plane requiring a constant stream of parts from the US, to ensure their long-term support. That didn't end up happening and they somehow cobbled together the parts themselves(kinda, sorta, but had to write off a lot of airframes).
Ultimately it might just be down to the timing(F-16s weren't an option) and the random whim of some Iranian official thinking the F-14s swing wings were cooler than the F-15 being a big brick with wings.

The AWG-9 and the Phoenix. The F-14 was the most advanced fighter in the sky at the time, with a TWS radar and Fox-3 Missiles. You only need to look to the Iran-Iraq war to see how that turned out, the Iraqi's got absolutely bodied by the Tomcats. The F-15 would have likely performed well too, but nothing else offered the standoff capabilities the F-14 did at the time.

Plus having this place for nuggets trying to get into AC or just to discuss plane games that try to do similiar things to AC is nice. I've been using the hype cycle of 8 as an excuse to replay the entire series, I still have 6 and JA as games I've never played at all. I've only got 5 games left at the moment and I'm saving 4 for the finale because it's my favorite.

It's not as if the MIC is particularly open to the idea of the military maintaining their shit themselves.
There's loads of stories nowadays of techs and shit across all the services just not being able to repair crap because it is in the contractors' interests that repair or replacement has to go through them, usually at a premium cost.
You could go through job training learning how to repair crap at component level and then end up just swapping in and out black-box parts that the supplier charges the gov't fat stacks for every time they break.
Anyways, plens.

They're usually worse for stealth because they limit your options for how you can shape the airframe. But a cruise missile isn't a plane, so you can use them to avoid reflecting edge configurations.
My guess is the new block TLAMs are just borrowing a bit of work from the AGM-129's design.
