Axe song Analysis.
First off, I've been looking and I don't think I've found anyone on the jp side give a decent explanation so I had to think of my own. Second, Ume's VA also doesn't say much about it during MC time.
The first hint to look at is, oddly enough...the English Title.
Mercury and the Honest Dorothy lays it out a lot more easily than Gold Axe, Silver Axe, Emerald Axe. The title immediately states there are two subjects of the song which then should be addressed

If most people don't know, the usual JP folk tale goes that a woodcutter dropped his axe in a fountain, a goddess raises up from the lake and shows both a gold and a silver Axe and asks which does he own. The WC says neither and so is rewarded all three axes.
Apparently, in a western interpretation, instead of a goddess appearing from the lake, the Roman God Mercury saw the WC and helped them out. The important part to gain from this is that, much like RR, A God has once again descended.
It's hard to say if a God represents someone in both songs. Personally, I feel like "Kami" is less a person and more "Destiny" or the fate of Ume and Saki to fight.
Alternatively, Mercury or the Goddess of the Lake in jo, is just a shorthand for Choices in Life.
They probably chose the Woodsman tale to represent all the choices Ume had (Athletic stuff. Gold and Silver medals) but in the end she chose to give all that up for Emerald. Emerald referencing the Emerald City which is the goal/the place Dorothy thinks will fulfill her wishes in the Wizard of Oz

Instead of a WC, it's Dorothy from Oz. Don't think too hard about the movie, it's just a shorthand for "Girl who is Isekaied"
There are two aspects that differentiate Dorothy from Alice who is also that. I believe they chose Dorothy because she makes friends along the way, the need to go home, AND a large aspect of Dorothy's tale is realizing she had what she wanted (to go home) all along with her the whole time.
Dorothy is clearly meant to be Ume. Ume is the GK who made friends with everyone, particularly Re; Iris (Scarecrow Fujita who lacks knowledge/money, Mother AI Saki who lacks a heart, Cowardly Lion Tema) or maybe 1-2 (Hiro, Misuzu, China). I'll be honest, this could have been her song in the HC timeline.
To go into it more, Ume is not only looking to battle her sister but wants a goal and so thinks she can finally reach that after beating Saki. But as the song points out, Ume had that potential the whole time. Dorothy could have gone back home from the start with the slippers (she just wasnt told lmao). It also does show that "She's not going back" means she's determined to see idolhood through.
If you strip the song down to its core without the fairy tales, this is about giving back Ume agency in her choice to be an idol as, initially, it's clear she just followed Saki. However, she learned that she actually liked this path and, even if this same Goddess/Fate told her to head back (Maybe if Saki runs away again) she would refuse and continue this path on her own.

I went to read her WING after watching the anime. Sure, it skipped the intro where she is scouted while watching some MiraMira merch and asks the producer if she can be a cute idol, and her tantrum that showed her true colors after being told that her smile was stiff.
But her essence, being confident and putting on a cute front, and only letting with SCP and Straylight know her Fuyuko personality is there.
It is a pity that the scene where Fuyu graciously grants the producer the privilege of calling her Fuyuko instead of Fuyu is missing.
Other idols were handled much much worse. I am content with what Fuyu got in that anime. It prompted me to read her commus.

Me too, truth be told. I already liked the music so I gave the anime a chance, despite all the warning everywhere. Sure, it was a slog, especially S1. But a few of the themes were interesting enough to make me read more about it, like Fuyu's personality, Noctchill's botched debut or Alstro's entangled in light pink plot. It felt "fresh" in comparison to the always happy and perfect idol anime plots.

Ume only really has #1 going for her. On #2, she's chief jobber of the branch. It now seems like she actually consistently beat Saki at NIA, but we didn't learn that until we'd seen Saki consistently come back to beat her at HIF. Ume is probably still landing right behind Saki at HIF, but nobody draws attention to it, so it doesn't actually feel like Ume is strong no matter how much we're told so.
#3 is mostly subjective. It seems like people think Ume had the best of the three songs yesterday, though, and that's a contributing factor, but not as much as #4. Ume is well-liked enough, but very few people call her their favorite, and that means people don't discuss her music very often.
It feels remarkable because it is remarkable. You're looking at #1, when #4 is the relevant metric here.

The Saki thing is actually a problem. I know we like to say that Ume is Goku and Saki is Vegeta, and that does match the spirit of the characters pretty well. But as far as their actual role in the writing goes, Saki is Goku. We keep getting told that the enemy is too strong, her power level is too low, there's no way she can win, and then she does anyway. You can't generate interest in Saki's successes by reusing that script over and over.
I disagree with the assessment that popularity generates more music discussion than good music. Saki is pretty popular, but nobody ever talks about her music because her only half-decent song is from Katamari.

It seems like the most common outcome (barring your own idol) is Sena in first, Tsubame in second, Saki in third, and Ume, the only other one consistently present, probably in fourth. I think Temari's route is the only one that definitively doesn't do that, with Misuzu being a extremely close to winning.
Saki was probably in second in Hiro's route, but we don't actually know that for sure. We know that she surprised Sena, who felt threatened, but Tsubame's placement is a mystery considering that she isn't mentioned and it came out before Tsubame had much presence.
But there's two important things to remember with Hiro's route. First is that Ume has her best showing outside of Saki's and her own NIA. This is the only other time that Ume makes it to FINALE, and she presumably eliminted Shion off-screen, given Shion's absence in the route.
Second is that the main driving factor for both Saki and Ume is beating each other. When one of them is excelling, both of them are. If Saki managed to beat Tsubame, that's likely a direct response to Ume doing so well, and so you'd probably still end up with Ume placing directly behind Saki.
