If you want a more serious answer, their dynamic is symbiotic and codependent. Hiyoko and Mahiru explain themselves: Hiyoko acts like the spoilt little sister and Mahiru like the indulgent older sister. Hiyoko likes to hang out with people who let her act spoilt, just like her father did, and Mahiru, although well-intentioned, tends to let a lot of things slide, as was the case with her father before she developed a complex. Even so, that complex only translated to men.
Then there is Mikan, who values attention more than her dignity due to an abandonment complex that is not fully explained. Hiyoko offers her the attention she craves, even if it is through abusive and sometimes cruel treatment. Ibuki also pays her a lot of attention in a more sexualised way.
Finally, there is Ibuki. This is the least obvious case, but Ibuki carries with her the loss of her band, which was made up entirely of girls. It is quite possible that Ibuki is using the other three as a kind of substitute. She also brings lightness to the dynamic, balancing Hiyoko's abrasive personality and paying attention to Mikan. As long as she's around, the mood won't get too ‘heavy’ to the point it collapses.
They are a toxic, codependent, but balanced group that manages to function thanks to their personal flaws. Without a hint of irony, they bring out the worst in each other. At least in my opinion.

I feel like this can be interpreted differently, especially in the context of a society with as many weird social conventions and as many social stigmas and taboos as Japan, ngl. Confiding in people is not something that people there do liberally. Even if Mahiru is a bit more free spirited than the average person, I doubt she is immune to social pressure. Sato was her childhood friend. Someone she knew she could lean on. The others were new friends she made in high school while attending an elite boarding school. Natsumi’s bullying could have easily either not been seen as a big deal by them OR even by Mahiru herself. Of course, this is all just speculation, but I believe it is worth considering.

I have the thought that despite some characters being able to offer more in the writing department if they survived instead of specific survivors, it's a killing game at the end of the day. There isn't a character that deserves to survive more than another character. They happened to survive a killing game, that's it, good for them.
I think 2x2 will try a different approach since Kodaka is not fully leading it and they'll try making popular characters survive. I wouldn't doubt at all if Gundham, Saionji, Pekoyama and Komaeda survived. People want these characters to survive.
