Thanks for an actual response, I appreciate it. I tried him out against a few low difficulty bosses like solo Gallanza and Id because the memes had me curious and I kinda like his gameplay flow, but I can tell that his slow, precise timing and long wind-up playstyle just clashes heavily with the type of game Relink is on Proud difficulty.
It's even more sad when there are other characters with timing based playstyles, like Zeta and even Siegfried, and they can work just fine.

How does Varuna compare to Leviathan? What's the cutoff point? I have 2 Ebony Retribution, 1 Yatima Bow (for now, will probably spark another after I get my 2nd causality driver, fuck Exalto) and 1 Gabriel weapon. I feel like it can be hard to accurately assess the cutoff point. I have like 3 of every other water grand weapon (minus Wamdus because I never got her ever)

Magna can use Dingers in ougi and Water burst is no longer as awful as it was during AA era (you have M3 daggers, M3 axes and you can use Gabu daggers), plus the element is heavily carried by its characters so even magna Water can feel strong as fuck. But forget about skill damage teams in magna - sure, Odious finally gave out F2P Tempering, but you're forced to go with a grid that nerfs your stats (even if you try to compensate with MKII Dingers) and that's obviously worse than what Varuna can provide.
Magna also can't into Hraes, but it's not like Hraes has a lot of viable content to be used in.

Yeah my varuna grid right now is a bit lackluster looking at the core pieces and I'm not sure about investing bars if 3 exalto daggers + some m3 axes are likely to give me a better performance. My main team right now is Yatima/Europa/Gabriel which does feel strong as fuck. I'm pretty sure "optimised magna" beats "lackluster primal" but I'm not sure about the cutoff point.

Before Yatima all you needed was like 1-2 Galilei, 1-2 Taisai, 1 KoI and 2 Gabu daggers. Wambrellas were required for Hraes but otherwise weren't that important.
After Exalto became a thing Wambrellas were dropped entirely and crit weapon dupes were replaced by Yatima bows, so in most cases 1 Taisai and 1 Galilei with 2 Yatima bows is enough. Hraes went full meme (if you don't have newest bullets, Formal Ilsa and ideally a dupe of her then you might as well not bother at all), Onmyo Shishio is still okay in endgame but Manadiver with DOpus is still retarded.
Magna Water is doing fine except skill damage - you can't benefit much from S.Monki, your Yatima won't be that strong, forget about chars like 150 Quatre, V.Cassius and H.Rat. But you can still go brrr with chars like Europa/Gabu/Dragon/Haase/S.Tefnut/S.Shalem

Honestly, I think you're only missing a second Yatima bow to get Varuna grid for general content. You have nothing for modern Hraes burst and you might need more stuff for endgame to get some DEF and TA. YOu can try to farm M3 and get nice experience with DOpus Manadiver, Europa, Gabu and Dragon, but if you want to use chars who spam skill damage (Haase, Yatima, etc.) then going Varuna is a good idea.

Varuna x Varuna with 2 Exalto, Gabu and maybe Wamdus summon gives you a really good about of skill cap and skill supplemental just from those two weapons. I think VerSUSia x Varuna also works because 20% damage amp buffs skill damage output really well.

Doesn't help that you're forced to go Odious x Odious (so forget about Bubs or Versusia setups) and your magna weapons do fucking nothing, so slotting in 2-3 Dingers and going with ougi + skill damage team is the best you can do.

I think it works similar to Erune ears, where it largely depends on what "animal" they're based on. The only other draph with horns that small is cow, and it's obviously because of her Zodiac namesake. So yeah, Yaia's either hasn't taken shape, or hers are purposely small because she's a doe. It's certainly unusual in comparison to most previous events, but I wouldn't call it weird. In fact, I'd argue it's weird that the anniversary events so far were so detached from the MSQ. If not all events, and vice versa. Like, if you stop to think for a moment, Narmaya just popped up in the main crew OUT OF NOWHERE. Meanwhile, Ferry, whose story follows the exact same patter all the previous main crew memebers' stories were, and who is included in every spin-off, and featured in promo materials together with the main crew, is still canonically not part of it. To a very slightly lesser extent this applies to Shitori as well.

I get the point you're making, but I'd like to reinforce your point by pointing out that it wasn't "random" at all. That year was full of these things. That's the year Bahamut uncap came, and we got his Fate episodes, which showed Faa and main story at the same time. That's the year where Orologia anni was, which was full of main story and events all being at the same time. In fact, the whole point of the Logia anni was that everything must happen exactly the way it has, there is no second option, everything else leads to worse outcomes. Not a single detail is allowed to change. Yoda uncap came months after that.

They were, quite obviously, not at all planning to separate main story and events. Because it's retarded to do so. Every single thing becomes a mess if they're separated. If they're separated, everything dealt with in events is still not occurred, so Sandalphon is imprisoned in Pandemonium and Lucifer is alive, but not helping out. Cosmos never dies, but does nothing when the world is threatened by Otherworld in main story. The moon forces have Diaspora. Dharma is about to burst, because Gran hasn't helped fix it or brought Zodiacs together. Hell, even Auguste is gone, utterly, with repeatedly disasters every year. Conversely, every main story threat, which is an end of world level issue, is still present. Akasha is fine. We never get Sky Map pieces to cross Grim Basin.

You get the idea. Events cannot work without main story happening, so events never even pretended main story was separate. The very month after the "separation" we got Juri's awful comedy event, which features main story and event elements together. Because of course it does, it involves Erste Empire and Erste Kingdom. You can't get that without main story.

Trying to separate them was a stupid idea and they abandoned it after one update because they got a lot of shit from anyone that cares about this game's story.

The story was instead about nameless nobodies fixing a pointless comedy show, where no one is telling a joke. Sometimes when grub writers make events about specific things, like sauna, you can tell they care about those subjects and write in details. Here, they skipped everything about manzai itself, the writer had no interest in it, and just talked about the sappy feelings of the second guy Juri got, whose name I can't even remember, and his relationship with some retarded Harvin bad guy.

I think the Raguza event is better comparison than Sauna since its similar kind of stage art. You can have opinions about the characters from it but it was way better than the Manzai event and a good example of porting artform to grub setting. Actually showed the stage act, made it a part of grub lore instead of just being a thing, and also had genuine fantasy elements to it with the ghosts as per setting. Manzai was just manzai without manzai, the characters nor setting made no difference to the writing. They could just change character art and names and throw it to some other modern setting game and it wouldnt look out of place.

But I will not make that judgement just yet, it's their first time around and they aren't even done, they might actually matter to the story. Darydara, for example, is already important to the plot, being the son of Violet Knight. Six and Narmaya got like two lines of dialogue each, so maybe they'll matter later, but they are at the risk of being just as useless. At least Six's habit of hiding in the shadows means they won't have to waste dialogue on him, he's just hiding.

What killed Rosetta for me was that they degraded her into being Io's backpack and nothing else. After the Innermost Teachings arc in Nalhegrande, it genuinely felt like Rosetta just existed to be a power up for Io. Doesn't help that Io is a completely nothing character.

Characters exist to serve the story. There's no inherent worth in "character interactions." A character or their interactions only matter in so far as they are of relevance to the story. I am defending a writer for doing "less" because "more" isn't good. It's not like there weren't character interactions. There were. There was just no interaction where we got Eugen's opinion of Gallanth's parenting skills because it's utterly useless and uninteresting. Keep that sort of thing in Fate episodes or miniskits.

An example of this is in the current event too. When Gran goes to meet Lecia and Walfrid, he's alone. He left the rest behind. This is because the character interaction we can get between Walfrid and Gran is more important than what we'd get if Six or Narmaya or Rackam were there. Given how Gran separated from Gallanth, abruptly and brutally, Walfrid reassuring him that Gallanth is smiling in afterlife, happy with his end, is something of worth to Gran and to the story. It's something only Walfrid can provide to only Gran, and is of importance to plot. That's what character interactions should be.

Some people enjoy just pointless character interactions, but they're poison to any story. GBF suffers from this poison a lot, it's a big reason why main story, and particularly the main crew, was so bad. No one cared about main crew because they were irrelevant to the story. Io, Eugen, Rosetta, Katalina, none of them had anything to do with anything in main story. If a character can be removed without altering the story, they should be removed and their interactions are worthless. You can remove the main crew from all parts of main story after the beginning island hopping, and besides FIGHTS, nothing changes. If they were replaced by a weapon that could let Gran fight better without dialogue, you'd get a better story.
