I have no frame of reference of D1 but the current vibe is reminding me exactly when I was so fucking confused why D2 launched like shit, wondering why my friends who played D1 were super let down , the copcels “erm they put prestige Levi back” when Bungie were rat fucks and paywalled it behind CoO, and other deflects excusing Bungie’s incompetence. Honestly it’s probably a worse feeling now because you got an ecosystem of Destiny content slobs getting cold sweats about the thought of filling a job application and they got their parasocial hug box of simps under direction to say how much of a heckin blast Marathon is

Nine years ago, Bungie had you. The DOOM left you, told you Bungie had won. But you disagreed. And now here you are. Your rape of Bungie made you my favourite general. So I built you a hall. A monument to your rape of Bungie. You'll have to fill it yourself, of course. But I know how you like to DOOM. Doesn't matter who you have to rape. [laughs]

Tracks unique users that have launched at least 1 activity on a cumulative daily total. Logging in and not launching an activity doesn't add to the total so it may actually be a higher number than shown. This is through Bungie's API

Trying to use this information to extrapolate the absolute best scenario for Marathon launch is like 2 million sales, maybe, and they need like 5x that minimum to be a financial success according to the "top 5 seller of 2025" thing.

3.6 billion for a new game with a potential of 40-60k average active daily players and Destiny 2, a dying game with less players than Helldivers 2. Surely this wasn't worth the money and bungie will be shut down by sony in less than a year

>Marathon lets you team up with other people and share loot drops
Its going to be interesting when instead of selling carries like Destiny people sell items in Marathon for real money. If Bungie implements a safe pocket feature it would basically cement selling items for real money in the game.
>>
>>
>>559054540
most extraction games end up having some sort of player market involved, so real money stuff ends up being inevitable. either way though, as long as players can drop an item and someone else can grab it, someone will try exchanging money at some point
>>
>>559054540
>share loot drops
>he doesn't know
The other people on your team are just there for security. You revive them when they go down to ensure your own security. You are competing with them for the same drops, even if you have the exact same bounty active.
>>
>>559054045
>>559054067
This dumbfuck company has been making online games for over a decade how the fuck do they still need to stress test?
>>
>>559054863
>he hasn't been around for any Destiny expansion drops
lol. I think it's actually a bad omen that Marathon didn't even reach 1/2 the concurrent of an expansion drop and didn't have the usual widespread server issues either.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>559054827
By sharing loot drops I mean that you can drop items on the floor for your teammates to pickup. So if some cheater got a gold auto rifle and wanted to sell it they would team up with the person buying then drop it for them to pickup and then you extract. Safe pocket feature would make that easier to do since there would be zero risk of losing it.
>>559054756
I think its going to force Bungie's hand into making a ingame market because Marathon is still being like Destiny where the only economy is between you and the game. Marathon has expanded that to other players but without an auction house of any kind since for buying/selling its still entirely between you and the game. Wouldn't surprise me if Bungie is going to start flailing after release and having to patch a bunch of holes in the leaking ship as more popup.
>>
>>559055293
>So if some cheater got a gold auto rifle and wanted to sell it they would team up with the person buying then drop it for them to pickup and then you extract.
Oh yeah that. Keep in mind there is also a limit to how often a weapon can be looted before it gets turned into credits.had this happen to a fucking shield I needed too

Really? That is incredibly retarded. So you can loot an item and it instantly turns into credits if its been looted too many times?
>>
>>559055018
Doombros eating good. Tassi already tying the white flag to the flagpole in preparation. Bungie absolutely refusing to budge on anything that would improve the game and likely holding to their creative vision that the game is meant to be abysmal dogshit until you get to the endgame gear, which can subsequently be taken from you in seconds and set you back 20 hours of grinding gear.

After an ungodly long period of time, Marathon finally made it to the number 4 best selling Steam game globally. But that's not really the whole story, because it's currently the 27th best selling game on PS5, meanwhile I can't find the numbers at all for Xbox. It can at least say it outperformed Concord on release, even though I'm not confident it'll do well long term in its current state.
Personally I'm more of the mindset that people are only buying it because they want to keep Bungie alive, alive enough so they can either get funding for a Destiny 3 or so they can make more Marathon projects besides this extraction shooter. Because I like the setting and the CG trailers created for the game, but the actual game itself just not remotely fun to play. It's like a terrible mix of Tarkov and APEX, its frankly shocking that this is the game that Bungie was planning on shipping last September.

Yeah. Press "v" to inspect something there is a thing in the top right that shows the amount of times something can be looted. I think it's 4 times, and then the 5th it gets liquidated into credits.
Btw those "gold" or yellow guns aren't actually gold/yellow/piss. Every weapon is white. The weapon attachments decide the rarity of the gun on some sort of averages basis.

>just play the extraction game like a battle royale
Says a lot about the genre
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>559070216
BR ends when one player comes out on top. An extraction game could theoretically end with zero people getting killed. I think it says a lot that people either don't want to engage with the outside loot system at all or play a game like Arc where 80% of the playerbase is helping each other out with pve.
>>
>>559070276
It's 2 or 3 days old. A lone few shills are latching onto it now after the fact because they are desperate for anything to fight back with.
qrd on the vid is that he's just raging at people in chat spamming that the game is bad because he's obligated to play it and telling him to go back to Arc which is what he's known for and made him popular. So he has a little moment of parroting the "stop hating games before they come out" and "you hate it because you haven't played it" and making things up about people hating Arc before it came out.

Obviously there are loads of outright shills defending it, but the other half of it seems to be people genuinely ignorant to what Bungie has become since they dropped Halo. Like the last 10 years of Destiny and its bullshit are plain to see, it's not hidden. Everything they've done to fuck this game over is well documented, and it will obviously happen again with Marathon

The /v/ thread was trying to claim it was "forced hate" and the second post was doing the "Embark (arc devs) paid people to anti-shill their competition!" which runs directly counterpoint to people claiming that it's a different game for a different audience.
>>559071464
It's just a vague indicator and some people can't be helped but buy newest slop. I know there is a small but notable amount of people that were pretending to hold out until they decided whether or not they were going to buy the game and those are the people maintaining 50k ccu overnight in NA time zones. A spike like that needs to be sustained over a long period otherwise those 50k people buying the game will skyrocket the "Top Seller" listing that only tracks over a certain time period.
>>
>>559071853
That's just pure astroturfing, the shills are genuinely shameless these days and their fake narrative is just pathetic to see, even some posters who I thought were shills (who usually dumped art) were shitting on the game the other day and on the general.

Heres the timeline:
>Launches and we all hatewatch as it enters at like 70k on steam and dips over two weeks
>Bungie says they hear, you are seen, and theres big fixes coming that for some reason never occured in the three years of development.
>Aztecross starts playing the bbw warframe update and completely outperforms all the destiny streamers trying to make marton happen, tractor slut joins him and they learn the true power of the dark side
>A month in the normies all left and like Anthem the writing is on the wall but nobody is talking about it but Tassi
>3 months from today it leaks that Bungie has cut studio staff by 50% to cut costs and we only find out because the fired devs immediately ran to Jason Schrier
>By this point Sony has a skeleton crew push out Age of Triumph 2 for destiny at the exact same time Bungie dissolves
>By July Bungie is nothing but a memory, Marathon and Destiny still exist but the only updates are cash shop skins
>Sony announces a new studio made up of people behind Fairgamedollarsign, concord, highguard and one guy who worked on helldivers 2 for a week who is the studio head to "begin the next great era of Destiny"

I think it will be in the summer, late July or early August. That's how it worked out with the 2024 layoffs, it was a week before the Sony Q1 earnings call.
>>
>>559087563
Actually like the other anon said, it could be much earlier like April. But the June delay for Destiny has me thinking they know something will happen before then and that's why they're afraid to commit to anything now.
>>
>>559087563
I know the whole Bungie working on stuff quite a bit of ways in advance but do you think the course was set as much for Year of Prophecy even before the massive drop off of TFS’s year in such record time happened? The physical lack of shit in current year Destiny does feel like a major executive decision of that impact but I also get Destiny was already cruising in maintenance mode when Episodes came, held 0 distinction from a regular season and Bungie got away with less season+ raid/dungeon obligation for the year
>>
>>559087764
Actually the june date is a Sony thing. Its when the fiscal quarter ends and they confirmed to shareholders ash and iron was coming in that fiscal quarter. If it doesn't they risk legal action from shareholders who can claim the promised, did not deliver and knowingly damaged the share value. They need ash and iron by that point the fiscal quarter ends and so it WILL release then, no matter what state it is in. Because they know Destiny 2 is finished but not shitting out one final update even if its dogshit effects them and their money and they can't have that.
>>
>>559087453
I am curious what is even the staff situation like at Bungie with either game, because there’s already been tons of people laid off both games, if Marton is the supposedly more self sufficient smaller load game to deal with, I feel like numbers gotta be really tiny . Either way the largest tell in all of this was how Bungie explicitly said how the name of the freebie update would be changed which like obviously that shit has shown to mean Jack squat when Ash and Iron had like zero lore to it and it obviously could be anything
>>
I thought Marathon was pretty inoffensive but questionable this was the big game they had to show for that went for tons of revisions and the like, the greed to push heroes to push cash shop skins is annoying when I think you could get infinitely more people interested in a your guys situation even if it’s first person. Biggest thing that brings my piss to a boil are the dumbasses defending the ttk even with factoring armor shielding and then waving around Tarkov and Hunt and how “you should be rewarded for tactical play with low ttk and getting jump on somebody” and completely downplay that the game has free as fuck aim assist and no bullet velocity , you shoot in more or less a straight line
>>
>>559088516
its pretty clearly age of triumph 2. they are bringing everything up to the same power level and doing a pantheon, its a one last hurrah like after rise of iron. Destiny as an ip may continue but Destiny 2 is finally dying and it should have happened years ago.

The fact that the Marathon is nowhere close to top 3 in Steam sellers, while it's that close to its release and just had free server slam for days, means it's so fucking over for them. It's really not hard for successful and well anticipated games to occupy that spot, especially for a day.
But it's even struggling to get over some crusty ass games.
For a huge company like Bungie, that is also metrics given, it's an absolutely terrible showing. We are actively witnessing the actual public and humiliating death of the legend.
>>
>>559087939
>but do you think the course was set as much for Year of Prophecy even before the massive drop off of TFS’s year in such record time happened?
I think so but they probably thought they could get away with it, and obviously wanted to shift the reason to come back every week was to grind for power. If you think back too, Renegades was going to reset our power again and the climb for levels was fucking brutal. That was their plan for not having any content but wanting to keep players engaged. Tyson commented on Year of Prophecy like before Renegades and said something like "we didn't expect this much of a dropoff in player count".

Bungie on the other hand is already on the hook for a $204 million USD impairment cost from D2 last year for failing to meet expectations, and that's on top of how much it costed to make Marathon post September delay. To say that Bungie is between a rock and a hard place is putting it lightly.

>I-it was in the top sellers!
It matters not. Bungie will still not sell enough to break even and will be raped and so will you. I'm nothing if not benevolent however, so I offer you the choice to join the DOOMGODS or BE R A P E D.

You're also not taking into account that Bioware had a shit ton of backlog with EA that would've still been generated sales. Slow, but would've still generated cash at some point. Sales would've injected some cash.
Bungie as an indepedent studio doesn't hold anything except Destiny and Marathon. Destiny is literally dead in the water at the moment, it's not being injected with new players. Even when destiny DLC does go on sale its relatively quite cheap.
Marathon would need to be a best seller hit for them to really feel confident in going back full force on Destiny development. But we already know people are just done with Destiny now.
The real test of Marathon doesn't come friday, it comes in 5 months post 1st wipe, where people have given the game time and will have had an established playerbase, whatever that number is.
Whatever they've got money-wise from that is what they have to work on in terms of metrics, what they have to work on with funding development and manpower. Devs are clearly tired at Bungie. Fuck I would be too just being a gamedev in the current industry, even worse after Highguard/Concord.
I'll shitpost about bungie rape and death to bungie all day but it's clear the launch will get players. The real worry is that this game doesn't have much in terms of pillars to keep whatever they launch with alive.

At this point even the Polish devs who made Witchfire did a better job of making an sort-of extraction PvE shooter game with some Destiny vibes (they even mentioned Destiny as an inspiration, and it really shows). Maybe one day this game gets released for good, once devs finally figure out they need to spend less time writing blog posts about how they develop the game, and actually start developing the game.

Is it?
I mean really
My second match outside of Perimeter Beginner I was legitimately bored to tears because 75% of my time was running
Even though Arc maps are pretty big, I spend more time crafting/looting/fighting in Arc than I do running.

i actually really dont understand the change over the last 5-10 years where people are so averse to pvp in any capacity. maybe its that. though i can at least understand it in this general since d2 pvp is just mario party

>but younger people like pvp/competitive games
is that really the case, though? even they seem averse to any sort of friction from other players. the mentality seems to be 'if i got killed or attacked in a game, im being griefed and its toxic'.

A few years old, but still relevant.
Basically, pvp is for 16-24yo people. But after 30+ single player games become more and more popular.
