That's Cris. He's been spinning his wheels for well over a decade. You need to hone so many different skills to a fairly competent level in order to compete in today's gamedev environment, which is simply not possible within your short lifetime if you're not an extremely fast learner. For everyone else, your best bet is to hone one single skill to a very high level and then try to get a job or join a team.

NZ themed Oregon Trail clone. I still haven't gone back to rethink all the stuff I display up top. I haven't got "The Trader's Offer" event with the rat before, a bit funnier compared to when you have the dog or sheep lol. My mate said I should add an event that could trigger later where you find your animal again, I don't actually have any events that chain together like that yet but I'll definitely have to make some. The game is broadly playable from start to finish, and next I just want to do a bunch more writing before getting into the real details/polish; I'd like to see if my sister or any of my acquaintances irl have ideas to contribute, 'course I'd add their tombstones in too. To be honest I've never finished Oregon Trail (I have Organ Trail...) so I still need to do that sometime for more inspo.
...I still don't know how fun it is. It's surely more fun than when I started as I've added various features and more writing, so I'm hoping it will all come together soon; I reckon I just need a volume of events to enrich the world enough. I think that will come with more balancing too, I've only done a wee bit from where it was completely borked before. I suppose I haven't thought of some things enough yet while I was largely tryna recreate the features of another game...
Interesting decisions. That's what a good game needs.

I sometimes wish I had a job and I could go to work for money instead. It's crazy how much people get paid for going to a place and being there for 8 hours while doing some light repetitive tasks. It doesn't seem so bad in retrospect but maybe that's just my selective memory.

Terraria had its own unique style
Minecraft had its own unique style
Noita had its own unique style
you can't call it "programmer art" when the developer has managed to do what many artists fail at, in creating a unique identity that also fits into the gameplay (some art works horribly with some games), is easy enough to produce and doesn't look like ass.

I think it's more of an understated pre-apocalypse. Everything is sort of shitty but we're not quite living in 'Mad Max times' yet. Actually, I hadn't thought about this until right now, but perhaps the state of things in the original Mad Max isn't a bad reference point--society is still functioning on some level, it's just a bit lawless after the collapse of government and dwindling resources an' such. The tone is a little more lighthearted and less extreme though; less bands of raiders looking to rape and more being run off the road by dicks in a Hilux. I don't think there's a specific disaster point, it's probably more one of those 'the climate got worse and resources got scarce' boiling from situations and the South Island is cut off and abandoned by the North (which is sort of how things already work now).
I'm still not sure about the framing though, I almost thought to present it someway still like how Oregon Trail does--that there is an educational aspect. Like you're playing this game from the perspective of someone many years after 2036 to learn a bit of what life was like back then. There is a little bit of that already with how it presents the location information when entering a town to you as though to a tourist learning about the place.
Currently your goal is simply to reach Nelson for the last seasonal fruit picking job (Luxon would be proud).

what's interesting is if you needed long-distance knight-style pathfinding, you could make an astar grid that has only L-shaped moves connecting to L-shaped moves, and it would find the shortest number of L-shape moves to get to a particular tile. I should keep that in mind, but I don't need it for the foreseeable future.

Heart of Evil is ready for DD.
Lots of small performance and visual improvements but the big thing is that I'm experimenting with cutting the boat in this one.
I redid level 1 and removed the rest since I didn't have enough time to redo them. It plays much better, also because I tweaked enemies and they feel more fun to fight. The boat, if I end up keeping it, should have its own levels later.

I think it's great that the tools of creation become further democratized very year, but the saturation does make things difficult. Getting stuff out there online where it's so suffocating, I've ended up getting off the internet a lot more and doing stuff in the real world, sharing stuff with people out there. It's a much smaller audience but, I dunno, actually meeting one person in the flesh who smiles at you and says they like your shit seems just as meaningful if not more than just seeing that something you've made has been downloaded or watched hundreds of times.

that is where I'm struggling conceptually. Even though it's a turn-based tile game, I want it to make good use of light and shadows to make it feel atmospheric. In my head I'd think if you saw a leg you could shoot it, but at the same time I don't know the general opinion on that. I still have all the code for the _data_ of LOS or where things are, but coming down on one side of the fence or the other has me stuck at the moment. Usually when this happens I switch to working on another system but it's been bothering me. For an idea of what I'm going for, think something like Cogmind+Duskers, if you've seen either of those games.

The man was extremely proud because he had implemented a complex vehicle destruction system where the tires would come flying off if the car got into a violent collision.

But Jblow revealed, that actually, he wasn't having fun. It was too frustrating to play.

Just a somewhat related story, with the only morale being that if you do make floors collapsable, you should err on the side of caution.
I'm imagining your scenario now: You turn into lead while sleeping in your bed, is that REALLY enough to fall straight through the floor?
Maybe for shoddily constructed wooden taverns.
And like, in that example its fine, just be careful if you feel drawn to overpushing the mechanic like the Korean man, because you don't want a scenario where your players decked out in a suit of armor, they pick up a sword, and they collapse into a group of enemies below get stunned and instakilled

I like all the games you've mentioned, but in each of them the floor collapsing is an situation that players don't enjoy. Either it ends the game, puts you in danger, kills a dwarf, makes your map not look how you like, etc. A few possible things I anticipate aside from what the other anon said: putting yourself in a pit you cant get out of, putting yourself into a 1x1 grid of black for 20 lvls because of procgen, etc. If I remember, a lot of survival games that effect the terrain (like No Man's Sky) had to implement "terrain repair" features to appease people that were drive to madness by ugly chopped up terrain

I always hear people complaining that Unity takes forever to compile after every code change but its always been near-instant for me. I have a pretty code-heavy game too.

Yeah it's great at doing that. Maybe you'd get away with the $20 tier or whatever it is, just might be a bit of waiting 'til it refreshes your usage. Sonnet, the cheaper model, is still good, but Opus' ability to break broad instructions down into a specific step-by-step plan and carry them out is impressive. You probably want to start with Opus and then use Sonnet for smaller more specific changes you want made. You learn how things work as you go.

bros, what if I make a bunch of very basic minigames, like the ones I usually make, and put them together, like in those old fake OS emulators.
Basically add a bunch of fake websites inside you could read about the lore of the characters and the world.
And have a bunch of like minigames that each one is a touhou level, kinda like mini app inside of it.

Cloning does not always equate to easy success. Especially when the bar is high for the genre because the game in question ends up treated as a live service game. Games like Minecraft, Terraria, Stardew Valley, and Project Zomboid really made it difficult by essentially doing a monopoly move on the market via live service behavior.

Fatfuckpost, ignore.
For the first time in my life I baked something and these buns turned out great. It feels so good to learn something and apply it and succeed. Then I thought if my game flops, maybe I can open a bakery? But I realize being able to do a thing well doesn't mean you can just turn it into a livelihood. There's so much more to it, and the competition is really good and why would anyone want to eat buns I made out of all the others out there? What does this have to do with gamedev? Absolutely nothing!
I fixed only one bug yesterday and now I'm trying to fix another but it looks it's more of a systemic issue with bad design than a specific thing I did wrong. Instead of a bug fix it's probably going to be a trade off that I hope players won't notice or give a shit about.

the main mechanic in papers, please is about information inspection and verification. you're working from these rules that become more complex over time, literally checking to make sure what you see matches with the passport, of if it's been doctored. they introduce additional checks you can do like body scanners n stuff. then there is the broader aspect of, you need to get people through so you make more money so you can afford to support your sick family.
so there is a bit of a game to it is all, there's a bit of joy in using your head in the same way you would doing this irl.
