The implication is that Bowser's forces didn't recognize Bowser being possessed by Cackletta.
That said, the remake makes it clearer by explaining that Fawful used magic to make Bowletta look more like regular Bowser.
Back to what that anon said though, the Koopalings were used pretty well in the RPGs, particularly the later Mario & Luigi games, helped by being free of the constraints of the platformers which stuck them to the same basic boss template.

How autistic is this? When New Super Mario Bros. Wii came out in 2009 and I saw Toad and Toad were 3 and 4 instead of Wario and Waluigi I told myself I would not buy another Mario game until Nintendo corrected this mistake. I've made good on that promise so far. I vaguely remember that and I remember thinking it was flimsy at best. You don't needs Toads to make everyone play the same. If Luigi already doesn't have his usual special attributes, Wario and Waluigi are also fine playing the same as Mario, like they are in Mario Party's platforming challenges. People have never been conjused by the fact that sometimes Luigi has special abilities and sometimes he dosn't.
NSMBW also fucked up the lore. Toads are helpless creatures by nature, and even in SMB2 where the one strong one was playable, he's a very poor jumper, mechanically the worst character. That's the reason Mario and Luigi are necessary heroes in the Mushroom Kingdom. Having multiple Toads identical to Mario only deminishes what Mario and Luigi are. Including Wario and Waluigi maintains Mario and Luigi in symmetry.
I don't remember if it came up, but there's also the question of why Wario and Waluigi would accompany Mario and Luigi on their adventure. Several reasons. Mainly, competition. The four are locked in an eternal struggle to be "the best". They appear in every spin-off for that reason. Extending this to their main adventures wherever applicable is a natural extension of their primary reasons for being, and keeps some dramatic texture. A full cast with zero tension is boring, it's nothing. It's such a waste having four characters to play as when two of them are effectively placeholders.
Plus there's the fact that even Wario wants Peach's favor in the comics. All those reasons are why nobody batted an eye when he was in SM64DS. It's not suddenly a problem in a sidescroller. And Waluigi is especially simple in his rivalry. Any chance he has to stalk Luigi, screw him over, and get any attention and clout over him, he would take. There are millions of opportunities to do things like that in that in four-player Mario.
You don't need special mechanics or extra cutscenes to make it work. Just let the concept sit there and do its own work.

Miyamoto has also said Wario can't be in mainline Mario games because he's "in a different art style" since "he was made by R&D1." But he's from the same series as Daisy, yet she's appearing in Wonder now. That excuse for Wario doesn't really make any since to me since Wario was just designed to be an exaggerated distortion of Mario, like his Bluto, and he had always been integrated into the spin-offs without clashing. I just saw the movie and I thought it was kino. Yeah the story is puddle thin but I think the appeal of the movies is getting to see those characters talk and be in funny situations they don't do in the games and I thought that was great fun.
IMO the actual flaw of the movie is their embarrasing attempt at giving pathos and sister shit to Peach and Rosalina, the non-comedy stuff.

I saw it yesterday and that was pretty much exactly how I felt. No need for origin BS meant we could just get right into the action with all the characters. Overall, the movie felt like they took one of those newgrounds flash animations from the early 2000s with Mario characters having DBZ fights and animated it with a hollywood budget, which is really all I wanted.

Also agree on the Peach/Rosalina stuff. It's not that I care they made them sisters, but it's clear they really had no idea what the fuck to do with Rosalina, and she basically just served as a MacGuffin, and they shoehorned their relationship in order to give SOME character a reason to feel something about her. The scenes where they dwell on that shit just breaks the pacing and aren't very compelling, and I bet the movie would work 100% better if you just cut them out.

The only other thing holding it back was the casting, most of which I still don't like. Jack Black was much better as Bowser this time, though. Charlie Day as Luigi is still absolutely solid and I'm looking forward to the rumored Luigi's Mansion movie, if true.
