TLR positioned itself as a continuation of the SaGa series tradition. Kawazu, as executive producer and scenario writer, is the series' creator. Takai, as director, is the series veteran. XVI took a negative view on tradition, with the tagline "The legacy of the crystals have shaped our history for long enough." The negative influence of Yoshi-P is clearly visible. Bad vides.

Next, of course, TLR is an RPG, a normal Japanese RPG, and simply a fun game, unlike some. Cities, towns, dungeons and gorge fields with VALUABLE loot, progression in which your decisions and commands to combat bros determine their gradual growth, deep customization, collecting truly valuable resources, a well-balanced economy, real party you can customise. It's a shame that without mods you can't customize all your characters manually, but even so, TLR offers far more customization options and variations than some.

Furthermore, TLR is a difficult game. I remember the Xbox 360 bros absolutely cried over the difficulty, so much so that the developers decided to tone it down a bit for the PC release. That said, even on PC the game offers a challenge, and the Hard mode, unlocked after the first playthrough, is the famous Great Filter. One of the most challenging SE games. XVI? Braindead button masher.

In terms of visual design, TLR is naturally more interesting. The grandiose Remnants of various kinds are a much more mesmerizing and unique solution than crystals. You enter Athlum and there's this huge flippin sword stuck in the ground, towering over you. Fucking cool! The architecture in TLR is also more varied and interesting, better than the dreary European shacks and gray, dirty castles of XVI.

Probably not. And besides, quality isn't really that much of a factor for trilogies being mistakes. Remake and Rebirth are both good games with pretty high quality (and several pain points among fans), but I still think it's a huge mistake to release a 25 year old Remake of 1 game as 3 separate games spanning a decade and 2 console generations.
