My Game Engine that I have been working on for over 2 months just got forked by SumRandDude.

6 Ways to 7 is released! Thanks for all the help and feedback /agdg/

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4005440/6_Ways_To_7/

just watched a jeff vogel talk and i really like the way he thinks. he seems like he just does what works instead of trying to make something work. e.g. he ignores all feedback, because he knows it ruins his progress. he uses free assets as much as he can, because this way he gets stuff done. he doesn't work on a game for longer than a year, because he knows he will grow tired of it. he says to keep your job until your game makes good money, otherwise its too much pressure. he thinks shipping is more important than quality. when asked if you should learn to draw he just said he cant draw and uses free assets and if he really has to he hires a freelancer. if someone complains about art quality he doesn't even know cause he doesn't even read feedback. doesn't give a shit about trends or having a hit, because caring doesn't help at all with the progress, it just distracts you.

Question to anyone who finds himself on this list (or even to the whodevs who released a game but never posted it here):
How did you find your game's music/musician? Like specifically where did you start looking for and where did you end up at and why did you choose them?

Yeah I know, "search royalty-free music, fiverr", whatever, I know the standard way to get music, but I'm interested specifically in the personal accounts of what someone who released a game did, just to expand my range of options and worldview. (And yes you don't have to reveal your name or the musician's, just the method of how you got into contact with them and what criteria you had for choosing them.)
Thank you.

Thinking about creating 2D multiplayer shooter similar to Soldat/Teewars. What engine should I pick? Does Defold have decent networking? Wanted to try programming in Lua for long time.

>>563599997
There are a few guys that you can hire like a mercenary, but they are mostly mentally ill people with almost zero experience that want 500/1000 bucks per song because "they have a degree".
There are more affordable ppl that will set you back "only" a hundred per song, but even in that case it's not worth it. Not for your first game at least.
Consider that you might never release, or never make a profit. Musicfags wants to be payed right now, and are not invested in you or your project; but in the case your game succeedes they will put it in their portfolio and use it as an excuse to raise their fares.
More over, there is one case where a game was technically successful, but since devs spent 10k in music they went under.

Tldr, imo stay far away from musicfags until you are sure you can finish a game and make a profit.
If you have a friend that can make music for you, that's another story

if you want to make games as "art" then do so but give up the notion that you should become a millionaire for doing so that's the core issue you're having

there's nothing wrong with making games that are purely for entertainment

stop complaining about what other people make and turn your focus inward

It very well may be a scam, but it's not an absurd idea. Devs can re-coup their steam fee + any sales they did get, and this place can sell 10$ for 10 games packages or some shit. If they have a wide enough reach to reach customers, it's not a bad idea.

Basic adult things like sign up for a cuckcard that can only exist by draining the poor and giving tot he rich? that is pushed on people because "muh credit score"?

There's a reason credit cards are more popular in the US, including the fact that usury is legal in the US
>>
>>563604082
I just recently ran into the issue that I couldn't email my wishlisters because the demo is 18+ and thus not available in my country => Steam thinks my demo page isn't up.
I had to ask the freelancer I work with to go to the steamworks dashboard of the game and click the button for me.

As an artistic medium it might be new but the paints, brushes and canvases have been mostly figured out. Excuse my analogy.

Early gamedevs didn't have control standards, defined genres, game design tropes, commonly understood sub-mechanics and whatever else. Shit, even the entire literal art pipeline was getting remade every few years. From color palettes and pixel counts increasing, then 3d graphics and 3d itself going through massive changes. All of those things are fairly set in stone today. Yeah there's some slow development in the AAA graphics space and occasionally someone comes up with a new funky art style, and there's some new fusion genres like we've seen with roguelites and incremental games. In the grand scheme of things these are small changes to the medium. It is rare to see a game that's artistically new, be it from design, story or literal art point of view.

Clicking spawns a bullet. Added some targets to shoot at and collision checking to disable bullet & target when you hit something.
Collisions are extremely simple (circle hitboxes only), so that's why you can see a bullet sail through the corner of a target.

Artists are in demand but the problem is you have on idea if an artist posting "hey I'll work on a game" is who you need

experience in background, environment design? UI design? effects and animation? those matter a lot
the art style you usually work in matters a lot because a unique artstyle can sell a game just by itself.

so whenever I see someone post like this, I really wish they'd just post their portfolio. I hire artists all the time but that's because I'm following their work and I'm finding them on art servers and such.

You aren't wrong, although my marketing plan was kneecapped by a very poorly timed reddit ban. Twitter did not work out well (but did find me some cool people and fans). I never tried youtube shorts, because I hate editing. I've posted about it in various craps groups, which is my target audience.I always get a few good replies from those groups, so I'll probably keep that up.

>People will come to steam to buy, but they need to know your game exists.
Most people tell me they find the game by thinking "is there a craps roguelike?" and then googling it to find my game, which sounds perfect to me.

i think the problem of the internet is that the customer is too close to the producer now. never before have producers be bombarded like that with feedback. also never before had producers so much access to customers opinions.
think about it. in the 90s, nobody knew what's on the mind of customers. it was just anonymous strangers and the only way to quantify their opinion was by sales numbers. now you can go to youtube or reddit and read what's on their mind. we have way too much access to what people think. it makes us too obsessed with what others want or think.

thats true, but my narcissistic feelings have deluded me into thinking my game will succeed.

if i want to play it, if i get addicted to my own game, wouldnt other people? i picked a popular genre, too.

Being serious, though, I notice a lot of games with dog shit appeal. I just cant imagine the developer wanting to play the game themselves, like they just made slop for an audience in mind.I just feel like I'm outside that group.

Nta. Personally I program everything as simply and procedurally as possible and then if I end up with something which is annoying to work with, refactor and abstract it. But generally structure and abstraction has to be earned. Premature abstraction is retarded.

If I've done something before which I know will benefit from abstraction like a character controller I'll start with a state machine, probably copying one from a previous project

But... move component? Attack component? Target has unit consideration? You abstracted every if statement into its own script?

Maybe this kind of building block approach would be good if every entity in the game was procedurally generated or instanciated from config files which modders could change... But this seems like way too broken up to not be annoying.

Maybe thats why they are so fast.
>>
i fixed a bug which created a new bug
>>
>>563634084
Most programmers write piecemeal step by step shit before understanding a problem, creating a field of landmines that just works. Afterwards they copy paste it out and abstract it into a hammer that they will use on every single problem even if it doesn't fit, warts and all.
>>
>>563634609
right, but isnt that what they mean by taking something simple? once its full of landmines and gets retarded is when you refactor.
>>
>>563634084
>>563634084
>When you are trying to make the thing , i wont lie its super annoying and difficult to make stuff but after its done it feel good to jsut swap things out and just have it work, less hardwork on my end later.

The fact that you have a node and dedicated script called TargetHasUnitConsoderation makes me think you've just re-invented code but in node form. You could have had base classes for units and attacks or whatever which were full of methods with any re-usable logic, and then created new scripts that inherit those base classes and just stitch the methods together along with any edge case logic you needed rather than being forced to modularize every line of code.

I don't know if you can get your scripts to give warnings in the tree if one of your nodes has the wrong parent or doesn't have the required children, like if you create a staticbody without a collision shape it'll tell you. Also custom icons would be a good idea.

>Do most programmers do the procedural -> abstraction step that you mentioned?
No they try some big-brained abstraction right off the bat without understanding the problem properly.realise it's the wrong one after it's too late to change, and then it hangs like a millstone around their necks throughout the project or they waste a bunch of time ripping it all out.
>>
>>563634919
Once its full of landmines you embrace the sunk cost fallacy because everything is so shit that refactoring makes any part of it explode, and you used it everywhere so now everything else also gets to explode.

that went out the window once they figured out marketing

shit like wow should have never been as popular as it was but they marketed that shit like hell to people who had never played an mmorpg and many didn't really even play games

after that high sales only meant that they succeeded in marketing that shit

it wasn't until steam reviews that we got some of the consumer power back and it still means fuck all to the big studios who already made their money

on the flip side having reviews is good for the indie dev because having good reviews can entice people to buy the game when they otherwise might have not

you lerp the visual projectile to the position and trajectory of the code projectile that actually hits something

if you shoot from the gun the problem is that the barrel isn't aligned with the center of screen point of aim direction so you gotta do hacks like above to fix it and of course you can start from the barrel with the hit detection too but it will mean sometimes the gun will shoot a wall even if the crosshair sees the target so it's more suited when going for a realistic feel where the gun is part of the world and you'll want to add a bunch to that system to make it feel good

Aside from the obvious, like repeated animations and how all animations are synced up to each other. The swirling orbs are in the way of everything. The hand pointing to you, the units themselves, movement as well. The enemy also moves lightning fast, which is what I prefer, but it's so fast you blink and miss whatever happened. Not that big of a deal because your health is always displayed, but you could probably clean the game up by removing the health bar, swirling orbs, and use the hand more for this info if you hover over them, give them an "exhausted" animation state when they are out of turns? Use the hand to hold up its fingers for their health? If so, then give the hand some character, like making it green like our gobbos. Not sure if you intend on giving the characters more than 5 points of health, but if not, I'd use the hand. Also not being able to move the camera means you're super zoomed out and miss the finer details of the game.

Not sure how much of this is relevant to you depending on where you're going to go with the game, but... well, you asked.

>t's the power to hyper-optimize our products through real metrics.

It's the power to waste your time going down the wrong rabbit hole by not understanding that there's a difference between what people say they want vs what they actually want. There's tons of people who say they want an affordable, purpose built, no frills sports car, and yet when they actually get made almost no one buys them. Instead they go buy a 4000lb slow SUV with the seating position of a bus.

This is great thank you, an exhausted animation does sound like a good idea. The health will go up over time so i cant exactly use it for that but at the same time there are only three actions in the game, so maybe i can try somthing with that .
A previous complaint was the lack of health bars in the game making it far harder to see, i'll try reducing the size and making unfocused one more transparent first.

Sync shaders to certain values, bind those values to a certain frequency in a script by using AudioEffectSpectrumAnalyzer. It's built into godot. So you effectively just want to focus on one element per frequency. sub, bass, kick, mids, highs, etc. Oh it's also important to not use TIME in your shaders you want to increment time outside the shader through script with delta.

Mine's a new project, a few months old, i got a gameloop but it just isn't matching my fantasy/vision of the game. that's why im going to spend more time investing in more content to see if it finally clicks.

I'm new to gamedev but i only find it fun when im chasing after a vision or a tone, so it'll be time well spent if i find out the game just doesn't work. It would only help my next game.

what's your goal with your game?

>>563648346
It's an adventure game. i dont have anything i want to share but ill start posting progress in a few weeks.
>>
>>563648923
I looked at the trailer for 2 seconds and Deus Ex popped into my mind, before I even read the tags that it was an immersive sim. Top review mentions it's a game like Deus Ex. Your mistake is assuming that cultural phenomenon has been experienced by those that perpetuate it. It is as much a social mask as it is a genuine interest, that's why you see CRPGs have such breakout successes even though CRPGs were never that popular during their peak. It's because people want to experience for themselves what it was like to live during a time of myth and legends. Those works of media speak to something deeper, some fundamental truth that can be hard to pinpoint exactly what it is but it's shared by everyone, dettaching yourself from it is committing spiritual death and why your games will never have SOVL.

Well fundamentally it's kind of a chess game with more control over the environment, such as being able to destroy some tiles or place teleport traps where a pawn on a tile gets sent to another tile, stuff like that. I'm just struggling to make it fun.

Adventure game sounds fun though, is it point and click? RPG? Text game?

Lol yeah cause game developers are known for trying out new concepts and genres.
Even when they make "new concepts and genres", most devs will try to leverage their other games audiences to sell more. See: Backpack Hero devs trying to release Moon Watch.
The only exceptions to this are usually streamer devs doing it as a social experiment or something and it's always extremely obvious to people, like Megabonk.

>>563649097
Mine still needs more content. Just struggling on what I should be doing. Plus indecisiveness on the artstyle. Done very little on the art end, not much reason to work on it if I do end up switching from pixel art to either hand drawn or 3D both of which I could see looking better.

I've been on a long streak of not playing games much anymore and have several games I still want to play but haven't gotten around to.

>>563656519
I'm pretty sure I've considered that. Saw one dev who reskinned his already available game, idk why when he could've just copied and pasted it and resold it lel

>>563645304
If you don't think winning it's a possibility at some point you will have a meltie and breakdown
The practical reason on how to make games faster is very simple: you build your own codebase, and improve it and expand it each new project.
To be more clear: you build something you know you want/can iterate on. For example a pixelshit platformer can be iterated for hundreds of different games. The camera work will probably be the same, so the ui for life, options, enemy ai, how jump and atk work... you get it
So don't make genres too different from each other, otherwise you can't recycle much of your code.
The implied rule is also to not give up at your first game, because it will be most probably be bad and make no profit.
>>
if i think about it commitment is exactly what's holding me back in life. not talking to new people, not playing new games, not listening to new music, not trying new engines/frameworks, not watching new movies.
commitment is a dead end.

Download a niche game engine tonight. Use the experimental feature. Announce a hotfix at 4 AM in a mostly empty Discord server. Build in a genre you’ve never touched. Listen to a player you think may have nothing in common with your vision. Keep the prototype raw. Try a weird mechanic. Make a Roguelike Deckbuilder. Make two. Be open to a design philosophy where you may not understand or agree with the developer next to you, but join their Game Jam anyway. Refactor slowly. Tip Gabe Newell. Check in on your playtesters. Check in on yourself. Enjoy the ride.

Marnix mentioned he reused the steam app id for MMO98. I think it's been in development for under 6 months. Considering Wasteland Bites had a similar follower count, it is looking to be a ~250 review game bt the 2 week mark. My guess is that it will do better since I doubt they will encounter the same issues, poor difficulty scaling and rng. Though it does suffer from not being very marketable, then again Wasteland Bites got little coverage from big streamers.

I had an imagination scenario where I was living in an Icelandic Town and I had some job and I would work on my game after work and on weekends.

And I would go to this place in the morning to get something quick to eat and drink, and there would be one woman working there who asked me how my game was going.

I of course imagined the woman as being her. My Red Haired Beloved. No other face is able to sting my heart.

And in the Iceland scenario, over time she reveals that she does art and we start game dev'ing together in the evenings and on weekends.

I see her everywhere. I'd stay alone in the case where she never arrived to me. She is the only one capable of breaking my heart.

Probably mostly the game developer's fault, other people have released games in Gamemaker without lots of jank, but it does possibly seem more frequent for games to be janky if they are made in Gamemaker than other engines.

Even GDScript has some optional typing, and C# is statically typed.

Anything like this, but with active maintenance and popularity?

Planets are kind of gay.
What if there was a space game with no planets, the entire game is MEANT to occur in the void of space. There's things floating in space such as space stations and space ships and even people with superpowers like for example Viltrumites flying around in space, but there's no planets. Probably like 100 space stations though.

Thoughts?

to put it differently, it's a game about floating fortresses and the conquest thereof. its multiplayer btw kinda like rust but in a free floating void (space). other than amazing floating fortresses (space stations, motherships, and more) up for grabs, there are crazy natural phenomenon like wormholes and black holes and asteroid fields and even supernatural stuff like "Angels" like the kind in Evangelion for example. but there are no gay PLANETS.

nothing interests me in gaming anymore. the only thing i can think of is modern day games. where you can actually go into houses and find meaningful stuff you can use. kinda like in zomboid, although even in zomboid the stuff you find is very limited and assets get reused hundreds of times (everybody having the same bed, couch, kitchen etc.)
what i absolutely grew tired of is medieval stuff. i have no interest in being a stone age nigger anymore.

Okay, I grant that they did something really right with that at least, the pseudo 3D makes the scenes look just like an anime of the time.

Just do it part is reserved for games you put on itch as you learn. You gotta get into the habit of doing and finishing shit. It is only by doing that you develop skill to make good shit.

Got weapon switching to work. The Animator Override Controller really came in handy, I didn't know it existed so I first thought about cycling through the weapon animations with a Blend Tree setup until I found out about it.
I will post proggy once I figure out how to setup the dual crossbows since right now it treats it as a single weapon so it only shoots from one of them.

It's flawed because you're using a giant chicken as the basic enemy. Tall things aren't supposed to be launched in the air.

Those have actual anime cutscenes, a 3D imitation just can't hope to beat that, no offense.
>>
I see now, the problem is the "programmer" copying and pasting all of the stuff from gpt
instead of fixing the important things he's making things more and more complicated from adding 1000+ lines of gpt programming instead of making a simple 300 line prototype and attacking a non-moving cube enemy
>>
>>563702142
That’s what I initially did.
I realized that if I was going to actually make the project work correctly he would need to be a much more complicated state machine rather than a more simplistic series of flags and physics checks

Hey, if a lawyer tells you to stop contacting people on discord and instead talks to you through vague 4chan threats that can be discredited as never happening, that's probably not good legal advice, right?

>>
>>563708215
This is something I agree with.
My problem is that while I generally understand code if I sit down and really go through it bit by bit, I get so nervous and overwhelmed with seemingly impossible tasks that I hurl prompts at the wall in a panic.
Usually whatever’s troubling me can be solved in seconds. But I need to work on that.

for now only, in a few years you wont need to know anything except english to make anything you want. We will generate all code and art perfectly and quickly.
It's better to spend the next few years thinking of good storylines instead of developing any technical skills.
>>
>>563709729
Storylines? Maybe.
But you need to have a rock solid concept most of all. Vague ideas do not make game. SOLID ideas do
