>What is 2004scape?
2004scape is the live 2004 server of the Lost City project, a project aimed at recreating lost Runescape versions, down to the Runescript.
Every cache revision that is available will slowly be recreated by the Lost City project, after every feature has been tested.
The Lost City engine is the best engine to ever reach the private server scene.
This server will have NO Quality Of Life features, and will exclusively be a recreation, not catering to playability.
https://lostcity.rs/t/faq-what-is-lost-city/16
>What day is it?
May 18th has come and gone, now the Lost City project is on July 13th 2004! The dark lands of Morytania has opened its gates!
All Free-to-Play and Members content of Runescape up to that day is available to play, at a normal 1x XP rate.
https://2004.lostcity.rs/news/219
>What content will be available?
The Lost City project hopes to recreate a bunch of lost versions, and content will slowly update to match later revisions, and it will eventually launch 2005scape, etc. The current goal is to reach May 2nd 2006, with the eventual hope of recreating lost versions after that as well.

This. Reminder that 2004scape, after years of development, will stop at 2006. Vscape will always have 2007 content up until GEignoring buy-x because there is not enough data to justify adding it in accurately.

Plain 2004 feels very much like f2p+ rather than a full blown members world. You get just enough content to feel like you're a step above f2p but not enough to really bring out the strengths of the game. Pretty cool though I'm still enjoying it. Also, with almost no make-all you can't retain a big chunk of the casual playerbase as their afk options are quite limited.

the server was pozzed since day 1
>troon mods

then they added verification requirements via discord (?!?!?!) and inauthentic ways to get rares like its a gacha or some shit (?!?!?!?!?!?!)
If you speak to why people here don't want to play Vscape, its because "they are muh toxic".

Thoughts on herb grinding? What is the go-to spot for getting a good amount of these in 04?
Chaos druids so far have been very generous, I was also trying men in lumbridge & edgeville with their added bonus of easy clues but the lack of gem drop table kinda sucks. Anyone tried other spots like Tribesmen, Thugs or Jogres? Any good place I'm still missing?
>>
>>
>>2039738
Chaos druids will always be best. Tribesmen are in second place if you want to safespot or use antipoisons (doubt they drop enough super antis to sustain indefinitely but it might be possible). Jogres suck.

>>2110139
Jagex probably doesn't even have copies of those old versions themselves.
Brits apparently can preserve 1000 year old artifacts, paintings and other historical stuff, but shit the bed when it comes to media. Fuck the britbongs.
>>
>>2110517
>probably doesn't
Even though version control was invented in America decades prior to Classic Jagex didn't use it until 2012. OSRS only exists because they're bad enough at preservation that they misplaced a 2007 backup tape before they had the chance to overwrite it and then rediscovered it years later.
>It’s known they did not have traditional source control until 2012 and on. There were supposedly tape backups taken on regular intervals, but those are gone. OSRS was restored from a full tape backup they managed to find.
>Before that, Jagex worked out of 3 folders: WIP, RC, and LIVE. Developers recorded the files they edited in WIP, and an Upload Manager copied them into RC manually using best judgement as needed. After testing, RC became LIVE.
>In simpler terms, the game was constantly being overwritten with no automated change logs to track versions or rewind history.
https://lostcity.rs/t/faq-what-is-lost-city/16
>Jagex unfortunately didn't start keeping systemic backups until 2012, with RuneScape Classic and the OSRS source code being the only exceptions.
https://rs-archive.github.io/faq.html
>Fuck the britbongs.
Most of the good ones left for America generations ago or died in the World Wars.

Projects in line with those archival efforts allow for functional private servers. While there may not currently be the exact 20xxScape variant which tickles your 'tism the RuneScape Archive, Lost City, etc. will be what makes it happen eventually. You can increase the likelihood of these projects succeeding by making high quality contributions.

?? do you know why 2004scape is the only project "in line" with that site? because it took literal years to even have a working prototype of a game made from scratch.
and now its worthless shit tainted by trannies and discord. give it up, RS will never be preserved unless jagex themselves releases that 07 backup

Update: Everything's done except for the Legend's Quest journal, they're moving onto the polishing phase this weekend
>As for quest journals, we just have one left: Legends Quest
>Before 254 can be considered “preserved” we also have to do a pass of polishing: re-testing everything we added/changed, and trying to find anything we missed or overlooked. This’ll take some time but very necessary.
>Strong foundations are important and of course we’re always addressing old bugs along the way too.
>I’m going to try and get some contributors together to run through things with me on a staging world this weekend.

yeah thats what i dont get about private servers. literally no preservation servers rs server makes sense. it's not like turtle wow where there is actual new content. it's usually just the original game but worse because the staff always suck.
>>
>>2180566
Agree and disagree with this post
The staff can suck but if you aren't retarded it's not an issue
Preservation makes a lot of sense because everything else is not authentic. OSRS is Rs3 with old school graphics, everything else is dead.

it's one singular retard from vscape that gets triggered by the existence of this thread. dont let that one poster have control over your decision to play, most people in-game dont care about 4chan. they care about authenticity which is what actually matters

Yeah its shitposting for the most part. 2004scape if you want a version that will update with time to 2006 (hard limited due to encrypted cache updates). Vscape if you want everything pre-ge with some liberties taken. There are also 2009scape, 2011scape, Darkan, etc.

eh i highly doubt anyone would even want to play later iterations of the game. 2009scape exists and gets 30 players and 2012scape exists and gets like 10.
the reason private servers will never truly take off is because there's nothing here except an art gallery/museum. mmos are meant to evolve.
>>
>>2189901
2009scape has a lot of goofy unauthentic things, and who cares about 2012
this does evolve by definition, albeit very slowly
thousands of players were online at once daily playing the f2p version of 2004. today thousands of players log in every week. just think about that

I thought the dragon med helm was considered ultra rare and highly valuable in the original RS2 before Barrows yet 3 people are wearing one in your pic. Am I remembering something wrong?
...
Nevermind. I just checked the hiscores and saw the 99-all autists on the first page which explains everything.
If I hadn't forgotten my pre-Discord 2004scape account name and password I would pop back in to take a look. I guess I'll never be able to join this server now.

Fire giants I don't think are -the- meta, just a good balance between money and xp
Green drags are the best way to get combat xp and money, but obviously not afk or comfy
Moss Giants (seen below) I think are the best xp rates an hour

Worth checking out, although I don't agree with some stuff like nats at 91-99 rc as fire runes are obviously better

Damn they already have a CML-like site up for 04scape? Very interesting data, but for non-poopsockers it def makes more sense to go for gp/xp rather than pure gains. Depending on how active wildy is you can get away with some impressive auto retal afk methods in certain areas of the map.
>>
>>
>>2212466
honestly just do whatever you feel like. that's the best way to play
i kill a lot of fire giants and trade the key halves for glories so i get a good stack to recharge
i afk yews with a goblin hitting me when i dont feel like playing
you can also plan around updates since we know what's coming. I've only been training ranged as fremmy helm is coming soon(ish) with rock crabs so what's the point of melee until then.. and with the fletch X update with that I can make all my yews into bows to alch. ez gaem

im extremely well versed in runescape ive been playing since 2009 (was born in 2000 but am actually the universe/god experience itself so technically unborn)
i played the runescape classic private servers and its just too far back. you have to wait for the individual lines of text to appear above the npcs head...slowly...one by one. would've been comfy back in 2001 tho!
i played 2004scape and i appreciate it for what it is - but having to make a discord to even play is fucking retarded. but it does have like 200 players on at any given moment which is pretty impressive. but it's a bit too authentic for my taste. i also do genuinely feel all private servers should have the OPTION of boosted xp. 1x with 2004 rates is just not fun. but it's still comfy to walk around the world but it wears off fast imo.
i played 2007scape and it's interesting but the issue with this server is you start asking yourself why you arent just playing actual osrs. the problem with the older versions of the game is there is really no utility for skill at the higher levels. you are just grinding to grind. but i appreciate this existing.
2009scape is comfy and the year i started playing. i really love this server and it has boosted xp rates - but sadly there is just too much content missing to truly play this seriously. what could've been.
2012scape/darkan is in a similar state. it's 2012 runescape with no eoc or microtransactions, but it's missing so much content it's nto really worth playing. it does have worlds with 25x xp and 100x xp multipliers though! which more private servers should have.
i highly recommend not playing ANY private server other than the ones i've mentioned. trust me, they are ALL dogshit.

ok i dont like the market being a 3rd party app that also wants access to my discord and to read my email address

After mid-2006 all the loc(ation) data started to be encrypted, which is objects placed on the landscape(walls, trees, fences, etc.). The underlying terrain is not encrypted. The keys are strongly randomly generated and change any time the map is touched by the devs. Tons of keys were never grabbed because the only people that were dumping them back then were bot makers and they just dumped keys for regions that bots would operate in. Most other private servers use a hodgepodge of map data from different versions or manually recreated areas.
Fortunately, though, August 2007(the version used by OSRS) has a 100% complete set of keys which likely came from a jmod.
OSRS still encrypts maps to this day but RS3 dropped the crypto back in like 2011/2012.
