The only arena FPS I play is UT2004 and since I'm an old man with shit wrists I really cannot enjoy the almost mandatory strafe hopping that makes the game fast. Without it everything is just so slow and the bots take advantage of that (can't play against real people anymore).
Is there something I can do to make it not require a double input?
In the meantime I have to unfuck my folders and take out all the dumb shit that 4chan characters/voice pack put in.
>>
we should let the afps genre die in dignity, bros. we all had your fun 2 decades ago. time to let go.
>>
any active arena shooters recommendations? I'm familiar with Quake and Half-Life, but never played the PvP scene.
>>
>>2243926
>active
damn
I would have said Xonotic but it failed to get any traction when it was new in the 2010s. That game feels really neat but the playerbase is double digits.

Quake II, yes, 2

Adding things to 2K4 is such a pain in the ass because removing them means searching for the files yourself in each of the asset folders.
After clearing my install twice in the past to deal with this, I'm now just holding onto mod archives to know what needs pruning when I end up not liking someone's model/sounds.

Still not sure how to match soundpacks to models in the event they aren't bundled together - can anyone say if it just has to be a naming convention match?
for example would ut2k4-TF2-SPY just need a corresponding filename for its voice bank?

Quake live, for clan arena and FFA
quake world for 4v4 pugs
Quake US CPMA for shitposting and hoping for people to play 4v4 ctf, and playing duels against whoever
Reflex Arena for duels and shitposting in the main discord chat, 2 more weeks till it goes f2p
Warfork/Warsow for their own thing, idk but they seem active enough

UT2004 has some pretty active servers, check the yt channels and you will see how much active they are:
>miasmarocks (VCTF, although with the berserk mutator on)

>Omnipotents, Onslaught
https://www.omnipotents.com/
https://www.youtube.com/@AnonymousUT/videos
/mlp/ has an active server with custom mods (pic related is the server menu), we just played a few hours ago, 3 hours nonstop:

Yeah, you have to put the exact name of the voice pack in the character's upl
Check out the modpack from the /mlp/ server that I just posted above and look at the characters' .upl files and the names of the voice packs for reference
You have to do it manually
At least if we're talking about the same thing: if you put a bot with x skin, it will play its corresponding voice pack
When you use it, you have to choose it manually; it doesn't change automatically when you change skins
Also, you're using Paul Catalano's Voice Packager, right?
It doesn't have much to do with what we're talking about, but I suggest you try it if you're not already using it because it's a very good tool

Thanks for the response regarding soundpacks. I've never actually done the modding myself, always just putting together what I find on the unreal archive. So, no voice packager but I'll look into it because it's odd to have characters use the stock jump sounds.

Whats the best song that fits your style of AFPS fragging/gaming/movement whatever gets that zone going??

I could never listen to music during FPS games because situational awareness is a huge factor in preventing ambushes or something like that.
For frag movies, I prefer when they don't just go the DNB route and find something that they sync the clips to, no matter the genre. The best frag videos aren't the ones with the sickest highlights, but the ones that demonstrate how to mix media - with timing, cuts, and proper editing - and make it entertaining as a product and not just a montage.
>>
Is it still worth it to start playing Quake Champions? Is it still playable with the low player count?
>>
are old TF games allowed here?

>I could never listen to music during FPS games because situational awareness is a huge factor in preventing ambushes or something like that.
i like having music cuz i like flicking and making twitch shooters even more twitchy, its pretty funny when its obv im playing someone whos relying heavily on sound, and they make comments about it after game when i just have music on the entire time, win or lose
can u link any fragmovies like that lol?
>>
>>2254137
>>2254186
ya probably
>>
>>2254226
No, because I honestly haven't kept up with any frag videos since I was really into FPS games in the late 2000s to early 2010s. I'm just getting old and prefer comfy singleplayer stuff now. UT2004 is the only one I can't let go of because I picked it up after it was already dead and the AI is commendable.
My drive has some old quake/tf2 videos on it but not the one I would want in this situation, which was a (very) good spy that set his to jazz. Too many search results.

This is so true, i dislike the fight that people are just making clip dumps and calling it a frag movies, it is obviously not, and the jarring inconsistency of the clips having clearly different configs and resolutions

UT99, 2k4, and 4 all have about 50 active players. Would recommend if you are looking for a more aim heavy game. The movement in the older games is not as good as quake, but I think the shooting is the best in all of FPS. Good mix of hitscan, projectile, and tracking. Even if you can't aim, you can get kills pretty easily with the flak cannon or rocket launcher.

If you count all the games, I would guess there are about 500-1000 active AFPS players, but they are split across 10 games instead of two or three.

Got UT99 recently for the first time, had some fun in a weekend lobby. Anything I should know or some better arena games? kinda wanna try some new stuff, bored of movement shooters and other crap.

Try halo

>>2259812
Arena shooters probably aren't your thing if you don't want "movement shooters", but you're better off with UT than Quake at least.

there are many, but i always think of this moment, so cool

In modern games you can't really guarantee this stuff because of all the brightness/gamma settings meant for different specs. Battlefield for example, I would get domed by a guy hiding behind a shrub because if you didn't use lower settings to disable foliage, you will never see his model crouched there. Building falls down and causes smoke cloud to allow for safe travel for your squad? Wrong, guy on custom .ini 'performance' config has smoke turned off and sees through half of it.
I'm not sure if tournaments ever ask people to use a particular config on rented hardware because it conflicts with the accessibility.

>Xonotic
I really liked that one

When I retire, I'm going to go pro in UT4 and UT99. Mostly 1v1 and TDM.

Looking for 2k4 map recommendations that aren't part of UCMP packs. Preferably for Onslaught or TDM, preferably really high effort.
